If we build it, will they come? Issues of engagement with digital health interventions for trauma recovery.

Exposure to traumatic events is extremely common with nearly 75% reported to have experienced one or more traumatic events worldwide. A significant number of those exposed will develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) along with depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Globally, trauma-related mental health disorders are the leading cause of global disability burden, and many of these disorders are caused, or worsened, by exposure to wars, natural and human-caused disasters, and other traumatic events. Significant barriers to treatment exist including logistical, geographical, fin

Assessing the Mental Health Impact of the 2011 Great Japan Earthquake, Tsunami, and Radiation Disaster on Elementary and Middle School Children in the Fukushima Prefecture of Japan.

BACKGROUND: On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off of Japan's Pacific coast, which was followed by huge tsunamis that destroyed many coastal cities in the area. Due to the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, malfunctions occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi (Fukushima I) nuclear power plant, resulting in the release of radioactive material in the region. While recent studies have investigated the effects of these events on the mental health of adults in the region, no studies have yet been performed investigating similar effects among children. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This study

Epineural Sheath Jacket as a New Surgical Technique for Neuroma Prevention in the Rat Sciatic Nerve Model.

BACKGROUND: Terminal neuromas resulting from severe nerve injuries and traumatic or surgical limb amputations can become a source of pain, and significantly impair patients' quality of life. Recently, the number of patients with peripheral nerve injuries increased due to modern war conflicts, natural disasters, and traffic accidents. This study investigated the efficacy of the epineural sheath jacket (ESJ) as a novel technique for neuroma prevention in the rat sciatic nerve model. METHODS: A 20-mm segment of the right sciatic nerve was excised in 18 Lewis rats, and the animals were divided in

Diagnosis and management of sleep disorders in posttraumatic stress disorder:a review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: International and societal conflicts and natural disasters can leave physical and mental scars in people who are directly affected by these traumatic experiences. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the clinical manifestation of these experiences in the form of re-experiencing the trauma, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, and persistent symptoms of hyperarousal. There is growing evidence that sleep disruption that occurs following trauma exposure may in fact contribute to the pathophysiology of PTSD and poor clinical outcomes. The purpose of this review is to highlight the im

Child and Caregiver Concordance of Potentially Traumatic Events Experienced by Orphaned and Abandoned Children.

Exposure to trauma is associated with significant emotional and behavioral difficulties among children (Perepletchikova & Kaufman, 2010). Overall, reports of trauma and violence experienced by children are discrepant from those of their caregivers (Lewis et al., 2012). Even less is known about the extent of concordance between orphans and their caregivers. This study examines the correlates of concordance in reported traumatic experiences between 1,269 orphaned and abandoned children (OAC) and their caregivers. The OAC lived in family-settings in 5 low and middle income countries and were part

[Environmental air pollutants and the risk of cancer].

The increased combustion of fossil fuels is one of the main reasons for the hazardous changes in the atmospheric composition. The sources of air pollution in urban areas include diesel motor vehicles, residential wood burning, and certain industrial processes. The types of air pollution include gases(eg, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone)and suspended particulate matter(PM)such as PM2.5 and PM10 in diesel exhaust particles. PM2.5 refers to particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 can increase the cardiovascular disease risk and lung can

[Dopamine: not just a neurotransmitter].

BACKGROUND: The best approach for defining and measuring community healthcare (CHC) resilience in times of crisis remains elusive. We aimed to synthesise definitions and indicators of resilience from countries who had recently undergone shocks (ie, outbreaks and natural disasters). METHODS: We purposively selected four countries that had recently or were currently experiencing a shock: Nepal, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) were conducted with participants at the community, facility, district, sub-national, national, and

Psychosocial resources underlying disaster survivors' posttraumatic stress symptom trajectories: insight from in-depth interviews with mothers who survived Hurricane Katrina.

Background: Weather-related disasters, including hurricanes, are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. Vulnerable populations, such as people with low income and racial and ethnic minorities, are particularly prone to increased levels of physical harm and psychiatric adversity from weather-related events. Objectives: We aimed to explore psychosocial resources and coping of survivors with three different posttraumatic stress symptom (PTSS) trajectories (High-Decreasing, Moderate-Decreasing, and High-Stable), after Hurricane Katrina across two different time points: F1 (1-year

Extreme flooding and vegetation fragmentation: post-event changes in landscape structure in southern Brazil.

Extreme rainfall and flooding in May 2024 caused the most severe hydrological disaster ever recorded in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, exposing deep socio-environmental vulnerabilities. This study examines the spatial relationship between flood extent and changes in the structure and fragmentation of natural vegetation within the Guaíba Hydrographic Region, a multifunctional landscape integrating urban areas, agricultural systems, and sensitive ecosystems. We hypothesize that flooded areas exhibit higher levels of vegetation loss and fragmentation, whereas landscapes with greater pre-even

PTSD in Patients Who Undergo Head and Neck Cancer Treatment: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after exposure to real or perceived threats to life and is characterized by symptoms including intrusive thoughts, hyperarousal, and emotional numbness. While PTSD is well-studied in populations affected by disasters and combat, the impact of serious medical conditions like cancer and its treatments remain under-researched. Due to the aggressive nature of the disease, fear of recurrence, and disfiguring nature of treatments, patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) may experience a real or perceived risk of death. This sy

Non-evacuation to cyclone shelters and the imperative of implementing disaster-resilient community-based housing and shelter plans.

UNLABELLED: Despite considerable progress in cyclone monitoring, early warning dissemination, evacuation planning and strengthening community confidence in alerts, one unresolved issue remains: why many residents opt not to evacuate during life-threatening events. A wide body of research has explored the factors influencing the hesitation of Bangladesh's coastal communities to seek refuge in cyclone shelters during emergencies. Drawing on primary data obtained through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), participant observation and field visits, this study examines residents' c

Minutes matter for life safety and risk exposure in Milford Sound, New Zealand.

The number of people killed by rapid-onset, highly-lethal natural hazards is usually proportional to the number of people directly exposed yet population mobility makes such exposure temporally variable. In hazardous tourist destinations that are dominated by highly mobile transient visitors, this makes it especially challenging to assess and manage risk. While the temporal dynamics of population exposure have been identified as a necessary input to risk analysis, lack of data and methods means such assessments are limited to using simplified assumptions at low temporal resolution (e.g. day-ni

Effect of Wet Carbonation of Calcium Carbide Slag on CO2 Sequestration and the Prevention of Coal Spontaneous Combustion.

Under the concept of integrated technology for coal mine disaster reduction and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reduction, this study investigates the effect and mechanism of CO2 storage through the mineralization of calcium carbide slag (CS) while exploring the inhibition effect of the resulting products on the spontaneous combustion of coal. The effects of different water-solid ratios, pressures, and rotational speed conditions on the mineralization of CS were analyzed. The results showed that the CO2 storage of carbide slag was positively correlated with pressure, and the carbonation efficien

Exposure to prenatal maternal stress is associated with epigenetic age acceleration and altered cell composition in the placenta: The QF2011 Queensland Flood Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) in utero has been associated with several adverse perinatal outcomes, such as pre-term birth and perturbed cognitive development. As the interface between the fetal and maternal compartments during pregnancy, the placenta has been postulated to play a role in this process. We hypothesized that placental DNA methylation (DNAme) may be altered in association with natural disaster-mediated PNMS. METHODS: Pooled placental samples from the Queensland Flood Study, or QF2011, cohort (n = 105) were processed for assessment of DNAme using the Ill

[Climate change and (surgical) health in context].

BACKGROUND: The impacts of the climate crisis will result in a health crisis in addition to loss of habitats and increasing supply uncertainty. In this context, the health sector and especially surgery are relevant emitters of greenhouse gases, thus contributing to the magnitude of the climate crisis. Many reviews regarding the impacts on human health are available; however, a view from the surgical perspective has so far been underrepresented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This narrative review summarizes the relevance of climate-related changes for the surgical disciplines based on a literature sea

Artificial intelligence language predictors of two-year trauma-related outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Recent research on artificial intelligence has demonstrated that natural language can be used to provide valid indicators of psychopathology. The present study examined artificial intelligence-based language predictors (ALPs) of seven trauma-related mental and physical health outcomes in responders to the World Trade Center disaster. METHODS: The responders (N = 174, Mage = 55.4 years) provided daily voicemail updates over 14 days. Algorithms developed using machine learning in large social media discovery samples were applied to the voicemail transcriptions to derive ALP scores f

Distribution Relationship of Pore Pressure and Matrix Stress during Hydraulic Fracturing.

When hydraulic fracturing is utilized to eliminate coal and gas outbursts and rockburst in dynamic disaster coal-rock formations, the stress disturbance of hydraulic fracturing may have negative effects such as causing local stress concentration. The method of combining physical model experiments and numerical simulations is adopted to study the distribution relationship of pore pressure and matrix stress during hydraulic fracturing. The research results show that the pore pressure and matrix stress gradually attenuate farther away from the hydraulic fracture in the process of hydraulic fractu
