AIM: The aim of this study was to determine any skeletal morphologic features evident on a pretreatment lateral cephalogram that may be used to predict improvement in the sagittal relationship during functional appliance therapy in Class II patients and compare changes between cases with and without a favorable response to growth modulation.
METHOD: Pretreatment and postfunctional lateral cephalograms were analyzed, and the change in the ANB angle was used to determine the skeletal response to treatment with a functional appliance. Based on the change in the ANB angle, the patients were divid

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate miniscrew implant-supported maxillary canine retraction with corticotomy-facilitated orthodontics.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 13 adult patients (5 men, 8 women; mean age, 19 years) exhibiting Class II Division 1 malocclusion with increased overjet requiring the therapeutic extraction of the maxillary first premolars, with subsequent retraction of the maxillary canines. Corticotomy-facilitated orthodontics was randomly assigned to 1 side of the maxillary arch at the canine-premolar region, and the other side served as the

The approach to orthodontic diagnosis has changed gradually but steadily over the past 2 decades. The shift away from diagnosis based entirely on hard tissue evaluations has been a result of a broadened recognition of the importance of facial and smile appearance to our patients, and how they change over time. The purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate the integration of the new soft tissue paradigm into long-term treatment planning, with a focus on the esthetic goals of treatment.

This case report describes the orthodontic treatment of an adult female with an Angle Class II division 2 malocclusion with a severe deep bite and a congenitally missing lower incisor. The use of available orthodontic devices and materials was limited because the patient had metal allergies. Following a careful examination and case analysis, the preadjusted edgewise appliances and the microscrew implants were placed after the upper first premolars were extracted. After active treatment, a good facial profile and occlusion were achieved. These results have been maintained for 2 years following

Skeletal class III malocclusion is one of the most difficult dentofacial anomalies, characterized by deviation in the development of the mandible and maxilla in the sagittal plane, where the mandible is dominant in relation to the maxilla. In patients with class III malocclusion, anomalies in the dentoalveolar level and esthetic discrepancies are also frequent. The etiology of class III malocclusion is multifactorial due to the interaction of hereditary and environmental factors. Rehabilitation and treatment of malocclusion is one of the major goals of modern dentistry. This article presents t

This paper describes the clinical orthodontic treatment of two cases treated by the recipient of the 2010 Membership in Orthodontics William Houston Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The first case describes a three-phase treatment approach to correct a class II division 2 malocclusion on a non-extraction basis. The second case describes the treatment of a class III malocclusion with a notable unilateral crossbite using a quad-helix, a single premolar extraction and upper and lower pre-adjusted fixed appliances.

OBJECTIVE: To test the short-term effectiveness of a mandibular advancement splint (MAS) for the management of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children.
METHODS: Eighteen SDB children were enrolled in a crossover randomized clinical trial and assigned to a treatment sequence starting either with an Active or a Sham MAS. Each appliance was worn for three weeks and treatment periods were separated by a two-week washout. Home-based polysomnographic data were collected before and after each treatment period. In addition, blood samples were collected at the end of each treatment period to asse

INTRODUCTION: To understand the growth patterns of skeletal open bite and deepbite, we present observations from 9 years of pure longitudinal data based on lateral cephalometric radiographs using mixed-effects regression model analysis.
METHODS: In total, 51 children (14 years old) with extreme values for the ratio of lower anterior facial height to total anterior facial height were assigned to 1 of 2 groups: a skeletal open-bite group (11 boys, 14 girls) or a skeletal deepbite group (14 boys, 12 girls). Measurements of total anterior facial height, upper anterior facial height, lower anterio

Cone-beam computed tomography provides orthodontists with 3-dimensional images of the craniofacial region and valuable information for diagnosis and treatment planning of craniofacial or dental anomalies. However, a narrow focus on the skeletal and dental contributions to malocclusion can cause failure to identify skeletal or soft-tissue pathologies of the craniofacial structures unrelated to the orthodontic concerns. Two cases are presented that demonstrate skeletal and soft-tissue anomalies identified as incidental findings on cone-beam computed tomography scans of asymptomatic orthodontics

Soft tissue changes were analysed retrospectively in 17 patients following distraction osteogenesis (DO) of the mandibular anterior alveolar process. Lateral cephalograms were traced by hand, digitized, superimposed, and evaluated at T1 (17.0 days), after DO at T2 (mean 6.5 days), at T3 (mean 24.4 days), at T4 (mean 2.0 years), and at T5 (mean 5.5 years). Statistical analysis was carried out using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, paired t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and linear backward regression analysis. 5.5 years postoperatively, the net effect for the soft tissue at point B' was 88% o

The purpose of this article is to present a long-term follow-up of the growth of the face and the nasomaxillary complex in a pair of identical twins, one of whom had suffered severe midfacial trauma at age 2 years. Growth of the face and the nasomaxillary complex was longitudinally assessed and compared by means of facial photographs and cephalometric x-rays. Twin A suffered Le Fort II and III fractures with an associated frontal bone injury in early childhood and subsequently developed significant midface hypoplasia; twin B had no trauma and normal facial growth and development. Facial profil

A 13-year, 9-month-old girl presented with the chief complaint of crowding and protrusion of her anterior teeth. She was dolichofacial with a Class II Division 1 occlusion and had reached the final phase of her skeletal growth. Clinical symptoms and tomograms were indicative of a TMJ dysfunction. Because orthognathic surgery was not accepted by the patient and her parents, a Herbst appliance became the choice of treatment. An optimal occlusion and a good facial appearance were achieved after 24 months of treatment. TMJ tomograms at the end of treatment showed a more physiologic condylar positi

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontics, just as any other science, has undergone advances in technology that aim at improving treatment efficacy with a view to reducing treatment time, providing patients with comfort, and achieving the expected, yet hardly attained long-term stability. The current advances in orthodontic technology seem to represent a period of transition between conventional brackets (with elastic modules) and self-ligating brackets systems. Scientific evidence does not always confirm the clear clinical advantages of the self-ligating system, particularly with regard to reduced time requ

CONTEXT: The etiopathogenesis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders has been attributed to multiple factors and, while the importance of centric relation (CR) has been acknowledged in dental literature, the role of condylar position and CR-CO (CO-centric occlusion) discrepancy in TMJ dysfunction (TMD) has been a source of controversy.
AIM: To establish the relationship between condyle position and TMD.
SETTING AND DESIGN: This was a case-control study to evaluate condylar displacement and interarch CR-CO discrepancy in symptomatic subjects (with TMD) and compare them with asymptomatic s

PURPOSE: To better manage dental treatment outcome, a previsualization of desired appearances can be used to understand patients' wishes. A deeper comprehension of labial modifications related to hard-tissue movements is advantageous. The purpose of the study was to evaluate tooth restoration-induced labial displacements in three dimensions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a group of 20 healthy Caucasian individuals, simulations of vestibular translations of maxillary anterior crowns were obtained by placing an acrylic resin veneer on the labial surfaces of maxillary incisors and canines. Three-dim
