Self-injurious behavior among Greek male prisoners: prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm among prisoners is a common phenomenon. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of self-injurious behavior (SIB) among Greek male prisoners, record their motives and determine independent risk factors. METHODS: A self-administered, anonymous questionnaire was administered to 173 male prisoners in the Chalkida prison, Greece. The questionnaire included items on self-harm/SIB, demographic parameters, childhood history, family history, physical and mental disease, lifestyle and smoking habits, alcohol dependence (CAGE questionnaire), illicit substance use, aggression (Bu

Dimensions of personality disorders in offenders.

BACKGROUND: Owing to criticisms of current concepts of personality disorders such as high comorbidity, criteria overlap and arbitrary thresholds of categorical diagnoses, a dimensional assessment is proposed that considers interrelations between different personality disorders. Results of previous factor analyses using dimensional personality disorder scores have indicated that one underlying dimension shows strong similarities to the concept of psychopathy and is similarly related to criminal recidivism. AIM: The authors examined the underlying dimensions of ICD-10 personality disorders, to

Risk factors for failure to meet listing requirements in liver transplant candidates with alcoholic cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: The majority of liver transplant centers require a 6-month abstinence period before listing candidates for liver transplantation with alcoholic cirrhosis and a persistent sobriety thereafter. We attempted to identify risk factors for failure to comply with these requirements. METHODS: Ninety-nine consecutive patients with alcoholic cirrhosis were referred for liver transplant evaluation between September 1996 and May 1998. The mean age was 49 years, 74% were male, and 54% were hepatitis C virus positive. To be listed, patients had to meet the following requirements. All patients r

Classification of the pathohistology of diseases of the salivary glands - review of 2,600 cases in the Salivary Gland Register.

Three major disease groups emerge from a classification of the pathohistology of 2,600 salivary gland preparations in the salivary gland register (from 1965 to 1974): salivary gland tumors (41%), salivary gland inflammations (26%), and sialadenosis (6%). Mucoceles (2%) and salivary gland cysts (1.5%) are seen less often. It is diagnostically important that lymph node changes in the area of the salivary glands (lymphadenitis, lymphomas, etc.) are worked up under suspicion of a primary salivary gland disease. Sialadenosis involves a primary, vegetative neuropathy, which is accompanied by enlarge

[Massive thrombosis of the left atrium. Surgical experience with a series of 117 patients].

From 1975 to 1988 we have operated 117 patients with left arterial thrombosis associated with rheumatic mitral valve disease. Seventy-seven were female and 40 male, with ages ranging from 22 to 69 years. In 75 cases (64.1%) the valvular lesion was mitral stenosis. Embolic antecedents were present in 38 cases (32.4%) and 95 patients (81.1%) were in class III or IV of the NYHA functional classification. In 48 cases we performed a mitral commissurotomy and in 51 cases mitral valve replacement, associated to left artrial thrombectomy. In the remaining 18 patients we made other valve procedures. Th

Hodgkin-Inflammatory-Based Model ME-IPS Is a New Inflammatory-Based Prognostic Model Calculated at Diagnosis: Results From a Real-Life Study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying patients with a higher risk of recidivate/refractory Hodgkin lymphoma (R/R HL) is a challenge that needs to be addressed. The International Prognostic System (IPS) identifies patients with a poor prognosis in advanced stages, although its relevance has decreased due to advancements in modern treatment. The interim PET-2 scan after two chemotherapy cycles is now considered the most crucial prognostic tool, but it is only available after treatment initiation. METHODS: We investigate the role of clinical and inflammatory indices associated with clinical data in 212 HL pat

Associations between significant head injury and cognitive function, disability, and crime in adult men in prison in Scotland UK: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although a history of head injury is common in prisoners, little is known about its impact in relation to disability and potential associations with other health problems. This is relevant to the development of effective management and interventions targeted towards health or reducing recidivism. This study investigates effects of significant head injury (SHI) on disability, cognitive function, and offending in adult male prisoners and considers relationships with common comorbidities. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, adult male prisoners in Scotland were recruited from Her

Reexamining predictors of trial outcomes in New York State's sex offender civil management process.

OBJECTIVE: In 2007, New York enacted the Sex Offender Management and Treatment Act, empowering the state to civilly manage individuals who have committed sexual offenses (respondents) and are deemed to have a mental abnormality (MA) that predisposes them to sexually recidivate after serving their criminal sentences. We sought to replicate and extend a previous study (Lu et al., 2015) to identify factors predicting legal decisions. HYPOTHESES: We predicted, on the basis of previous research, that clinical information (e.g., diagnosis) as well as empirically supported risk factors (e.g., sexual

Violent women, blame attribution, crime, and personality.

BACKGROUND: The attribution of blame for criminal act has an impact, both on the way the offender must come to terms with the offence and on the risk of recidivism. Blame attribution has been found to be related to the type of crime and personality. AIMS: This study examined the relationship of blame attribution and feelings of guilt in violent female offenders, according to factors related to crime, background and personality. METHODS: The Gudjonsson Blame Attribution Inventory (BAI) and the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ) were administered to 58 violent female offenders. The Hare Psychop

Brief effective treatment strategies: pharmacological therapy for opiate addicts.

This paper has examined the possibilities of applying significant pharmacologic help to a variety of psychiatric problems that may accompany narcotic addiction. It has been shown that many of the patients do have such difficulties, with affective disorders being most common. As far as the various psychotropic drugs are concerned, neuroleptics for schizophrenia and lithium for manic disorders are generally agreed upon. A more extensive trial of lithium in a variety of situations seems indicated. Minor tranquilizers for anxiety and MAO-inhibitors for depression are both seen as problematic in th

Influence of Organizational Characteristics on Success in Implementing Process Improvement Goals in Correctional Treatment Settings.

Although research indicates that organizational characteristics substantially influence the adoption and use of evidence-based practices (EBPs), there has been little empirical research on organizational factors most likely to influence successful implementation of EBPs, particularly in criminal justice settings. This study examined organizational characteristics related to the success of change teams in achieving improvements in assessment and case-planning procedures for persons leaving correctional settings and receiving community services. In this evaluation of the Organizational Process I

Black girls and referrals: racial and gender disparities in self-reported referral to substance use disorder assessment among justice-involved children.

BACKGROUND: There is a higher prevalence of substance use disorder (SUD) among justice-involved children (JIC). It is critical to ensure that JIC who report current use are referred for SUD assessment and potentially life-saving treatment services. Prior research suggests that certain minoritized groups may be less likely to have ever been referred for screening, and research on intersectionality suggests that these disparities may be exacerbated for racially minoritized females. METHODS: Multivariate logistic regression and interaction effects were employed to analyze longitudinal data from

The Accessibility of Opioid Agonist Treatment and Its Forced Discontinuation in Swiss Prisons-Attitudes, Perceptions and Experiences of Defense Lawyers in Dealing With Detained Persons Using Opioids.

BACKGROUND: Opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is an important pillar in the treatment of individuals using opioids and its continuation during imprisonment is recommended. Despite this knowledge access to and continuation of OAT is still limited in many countries. The forced discontinuation during pre-trial detention can cause severe withdrawal symptoms, which in turn may significantly impair the defendant's ability to exercise granted procedural participation rights. Furthermore, it can be argued that forced discontinuation of a desired treatment represents a form of a compulsory intervention.

Medical nutrition therapy in Canadian federal correctional facilities.

BACKGROUND: Under- and over nutrition as well as nutrition risk factors such as communicable and non-communicable diseases are a common and major cause of morbidity and mortality in correctional facilities. Consequently, medical nutrition therapy (MNT), a spectrum of nutrition services aimed at optimizing individual well-being, is being recognized as integral to the health of people who experience incarceration. However, there is a paucity of research that explores the delivery of MNT in correctional facilities. METHODS: A scoping review combined with secondary analysis of qualitative data (f
