Relation of Cardiorespiratory Fitness to Risk of Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Men With Cardiometabolic Syndrome.

We tested the hypothesis that cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in men and that moderate-to-high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (fitness) attenuate this relation. Our study population (n = 2,107 men) participated in a health screening program that included measures of coronary artery calcification (CAC) and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) as surrogate markers of subclinical atherosclerosis. The prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis was defined as a CAC score >0 and a mean CIMT more than the seventy-fifth percentile. Fitness was

Multimodal sensory feedback associated with motor attempts alters BOLD responses to paralyzed hand movement in chronic stroke patients.

Electroencephalogram-based brain-computer interfaces (BCI) have been used as a potential tool for training volitional regulation of corticomuscular drive in patients who have severe hemiplegia due to stroke. However, it is unclear whether ERD observed while attempting motor execution can be regarded as a neural marker that represents M1 excitability in survivors of severe stroke. Therefore we investigated the association between ERD and the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI signal during attempted movement of a paralyzed finger in stroke patients. Nine chronic stroke patients received B

Influence of knee flexion angle and age on triceps surae muscle fatigue during heel raises.

The triceps surae (TS) muscle-tendon unit is 1 of the most commonly injured in elite and recreational athletes, with a high prevalence in middle-aged adults. The performance of maximal numbers of unilateral heel raises is used to assess, train, and rehabilitate TS endurance and conventionally prescribed in 0° knee flexion (KF) for the gastrocnemius and 45° for the soleus (SOL). However, the extent of muscle selectivity conferred through the change in the knee angle is lacking for heel raises performed to volitional fatigue. This study investigated the influence of knee angle on TS muscle fatig

The effects of fatigue of the plantar flexors on peak torque and voluntary activation in untrained and resistance-trained men.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of fatigue of the plantar flexors on peak torque and voluntary activation in untrained (UT) and resistance-trained (RT) men. Six men with no previous resistance training experience and 8 men with similar histories of chronic resistance training (9.8 ± 5.9 years, 3.8 ± 0.7 days/week) volunteered for this study. Subjects performed isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) before and immediately after unilateral dynamic isotonic contractions performed at 40% of MVC until volitional exhaustion. Voluntary activation of the plantar flexors w

Cycling with functional electrical stimulation in an adult with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adults with cerebral palsy (CP) are at risk for decreased mobility and health complications, and exercise may combat some of these negative changes. Because people with CP have difficulty generating sufficient muscle force, exercise augmented with functional electrical stimulation (FES) is an option for increasing exercise intensity. This mixed-method (quantitative-qualitative) case report describes the effects-across the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model-of cycling with FES (FES cycling) in an adult with CP. The effect of sodium bicarbonate ingestion on high-intensity intermittent running and subsequent performance.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) ingestion on intermittent running and subsequent performance. Eight healthy men volunteered to take part in the study. One hour after the ingestion of either NaHCO(3) or placebo (sodium chloride; NaCl) participants undertook 20 x 24-second runs on a motorized treadmill at the velocity eliciting maximal oxygen uptake (100% v-VO(2)max). After sprint 20 participants performed a run to volitional exhaustion at 120% v-VO(2)max. Capillary blood samples for blood pH, bicarbonate ([HCO(3)]), and lactate ([Bla]) conce

Enhanced exercise-induced plasma cytokine response and oxidative stress in COPD patients depend on blood oxygenation.

In healthy subjects, hypoxemia and exercise represent independent stressors promoting the exercise-induced cytokine response and oxidative stress. We hypothesized that hypoxemia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may affect the cytokine production and/or the changes in oxidant-antioxidant status in response to maximal exercise. Exercise-induced changes in PaO2 allowed to transiently increase or decrease baseline hypoxemia and to point out its specific action on muscle metabolism. COPD patients with severe to moderate hypoxemia (56 < PaO2 < 72 mmHg) performed an incre

Deficits in eye movement control in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to alcohol can result in a spectrum of adverse developmental outcomes in offspring, collectively termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Deficits in executive function--the psychological processes involved in controlling voluntary goal-oriented behavior--are prevalent in FASD. Oculomotor tasks have been designed as highly sensitive tools to evaluate components of executive function. Because of the extensive overlap in the brain areas controlling eye movements and those affected in FASD, we hypothesized that individuals with FASD display specific neurobehav

The effects of nightly normobaric hypoxia and high intensity training under intermittent normobaric hypoxia on running economy and hemoglobin mass.

We investigated the effects of nightly intermittent exposure to hypoxia and of training during intermittent hypoxia on both erythropoiesis and running economy (RE), which is indicated by the oxygen cost during running at submaximal speeds. Twenty-five college long- and middle- distance runners [maximal oxygen uptake (Vo(2max)) 60.3 +/- 4.7 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)] were randomly assigned to one of three groups: hypoxic residential group (HypR, 11 h/night at 3,000 m simulated altitude), hypoxic training group (HypT), or control group (Con), for an intervention of 29 nights. All subjects trained in

Ventilatory dynamics and control of blood gases after maximal exercise in the Thoroughbred horse.

Despite enormous rates of minute ventilation (Ve) in the galloping Thoroughbred (TB) horse, the energetic demands of exercise conspire to raise arterial Pco(2) (i.e., induce hypercapnia). If locomotory-respiratory coupling (LRC) is an obligatory facilitator of high Ve in the horse such as those found during galloping (Bramble and Carrier. Science 219: 251-256, 1983), Ve should drop precipitously when LRC ceases at the galloptrot transition, thus exacerbating the hypercapnia. TB horses (n = 5) were run to volitional fatigue on a motor-driven treadmill (1 m/s increments; 14-15 m/s) to study the

Venous serum chloride and bicarbonate measurements in the evaluation of respiratory function in motor neuron disease.

Respiratory failure, with or without pneumonia, is the usual cause of death in patients with motor neuron disease (MND). Forced vital capacity (FVC) is often used to monitor respiratory function in MND and is, in part, predictive of survival time. However, such volitional tests are unreliable in many patients, especially later in the disease, and access to hospital laboratories can also be a problem for some disabled patients. We assessed the use of domiciliary venous serum chloride and bicarbonate measurements in evaluating respiratory function in MND. Newly-diagnosed MND patients (n=23) were

Perceptual responses in the heat after brief intravenous versus oral rehydration.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of a brief period (20 min) of intravenous (IV) fluid rehydration and oral (ORAL) rehydration on ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), thirst, and thermal sensation (TS) during exercise in the heat. METHODS: After dehydration (-4% of body weight), eight nonacclimated highly trained cyclists (age = 24 +/- 1 yr; VO2 = 61.4 +/- 0.8 mL.kg.min-1) performed three experimental trials. Rehydration (randomized, cross-over design) included: 1) ORAL (0.45% NaCl) equal to 50% of prior dehydration; 2) IV (0.45% NaCl) equal to 50% of prior dehydrat

Failure of voluntary activation of the quadriceps femoris muscle after patellar contusion.

STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study of phenomenon. OBJECTIVES: To determine the extent of failure of voluntary activation of the quadriceps femoris muscle in patients early after patellar contusion. BACKGROUND: Pain and effusion are related to the presence of quadriceps inhibition. We hypothesized that patients with patellar contusions would be unable to fully recruit their quadriceps muscles and that the activation deficit would be associated with self-report measures of function. METHODS AND MEASURES: Sixteen patients who had sustained a unilateral patellar contusion fewer than 4 months prior

A preliminary study of acute responses to clamped alcohol concentration and family history of alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: The clamping method of alcohol administration was combined with a battery of dependent measures of frontal lobe brain function, and a novel index of acute adaptation, in a preliminary study in order to explore the paradigm's sensitivity to a familial history of alcoholism (FHA). METHODS: Ten family history-positive (FHP) and 10 family history-negative (FHN) adult social drinkers of both genders underwent alcohol clamping. Twenty minutes after the start of an intravenous infusion of alcohol, the breath alcohol concentration was clamped at a target of 60+/-5 mg/dl for 150 min. Initi

A chest wall restrictor to study effects on pulmonary function and exercise. 2. The energetics of restrictive breathing.

Chest wall restriction, whether caused by disease or mechanical constraints such as protective outerwear, can cause decrements in pulmonary function and exercise capacity. However, the study of the oxygen cost associated with mechanical chest restriction has so far been purely qualitative. The previous paper in this series described a device to impose external chest wall restriction, its effects on forced spirometric volumes, and its test-retest reliability. The purpose of this experiment was to measure the oxygen cost associated with varied levels of external chest wall restriction. Oxygen up

The control of lateral stability during rapid stepping reactions evoked by antero-posterior perturbation: does anticipatory control play a role?

Volitional step initiation invariably includes a medio-lateral anticipatory postural adjustment (ML APA), which causes the center of mass (COM) to be propelled toward the stance-limb side prior to the lifting of the swing foot. The present study examined whether this type of anticipatory control plays a functional role in maintaining lateral stability during the rapid compensatory stepping reactions that are evoked when whole-body stability is challenged by unpredictable perturbation. Forward and backward stepping reactions were evaluated in five healthy young adults (ages 22-28) under three t

A prospective study of postural balance and risk of falling in an ambulatory and independent elderly population.

BACKGROUND: An ability to predict risk of future falling is needed in order to target high-risk individuals for preventive intervention. The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of different measures of postural balance to predict risk of falling prospectively in an ambulatory and independent elderly population. METHODS: Balance tests were performed on 100 volunteers (aged 62-96), and falling was then monitored prospectively over a one-year period. The balance testing comprised measurements of: (a) spontaneous postural sway, (b) induced anterior-posterior sway, (c) induced medial-

Functional connectivity of the ventral tegmental area and avolition in subjects with schizophrenia: a resting state functional MRI study.

Avolition, a deficit in goal-directed behavior, is a key aspect of negative symptoms. It is highly prevalent in schizophrenia and is associated to poor functional outcome and to measures of real life motivation, indicating that central to the concept is the lack of interest and motivation. In this study we tested the hypothesis that avolition is related to altered connectivity within dopaminergic cortico-striatal circuits involved in motivation processes. Since dopamine input to these circuits derives mostly from the ventro-tegmental area (VTA), we investigated the relationships between the re

Effect of esophageal acid exposure on the cortical swallowing network in healthy human subjects.

Recent studies have demonstrated common cortical activity regions associated with esophageal acidification and swallowing. The effect of sensory signals imparted on these regions by esophageal acidification on swallow-related brain activity has physiological and clinical ramifications. Our aim in this study was to determine the effect of prior, unperceived esophageal acid exposure on cortical activity associated with swallowing. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques monitored brain activity associated with volitional swallowing before and after subliminal esophageal acid stim

Dissociated palsy of vertical saccades: loss of voluntary and visually guided saccades with preservation of reflexive vestibular quick phases.

A patient with a diencephalic infarct displayed a persistent palsy of voluntary and visually guided vertical saccades with preserved vertical quick phases of vestibular nystagmus on magnetic search coil oculography. Vertical smooth pursuit had very low velocity in both directions without catch-up saccades. Vertical and torsional vestibulo-ocular reflex gains were normal. Preservation of vertical and torsional quick phases signifies integrity of the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF). This case is the first to provide evidence that disruption of descendin
