There are numerous risk factors for stress fractures that have been identified in literature. Among different risk factors, a prolonged lack of vitamin D (25(OH)D) can lead to stress fractures in athletes since 25(OH)D insufficiency is associated with an increased incidence of a fracture. A 25(OH)D value of <75.8 nmol/L is a risk factor for a stress fracture. 25(OH)D deficiency is, however, only one of several potential risk factors. Well-documented risk factors for a stress fracture include female sex, white ethnicity, older age, taller stature, lower aerobic fitness, prior physical inactivit

We performed a retrospective review to evaluate acute medial collateral ligament injuries of the elbow in professional football players from 1991 to 1996 (5 seasons). There were 5 acute medial collateral ligament injuries in 4 players (1 player with bilateral involvement). All injuries occurred with the hand planted on the playing surface while a valgus or hyperextension force was applied to the elbow. There were 2 centers, both involved with long-snapping situations, 1 running back, and 1 quarterback. All elbows had valgus instability on physical examination. Despite this instability, all pla

Injuries to the shoulder and elbow are common in athletes involved in sporting activities that require overhead motion of the arm. An understanding of the forces involved in the throwing motion, the anatomic structures most at risk, and the magnetic resonance imaging appearances of the most common associated injuries can help to improve diagnostic accuracy when interpreting imaging studies in these patients.

BACKGROUND: The flexor pronator mass (FPM) is an important dynamic stabilizer to valgus stress at the elbow and has been reported to protect against ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury. Active gripping and pronation have demonstrated reduced ulnohumeral joint space and change in material properties of the UCL when examined in vivo via ultrasound. No studies have utilized ultrasonography and shear wave elastography to characterize the medial elbow's response to FPM activation under valgus stress. This cross-sectional, repeated measures study aims to characterize medial elbow changes in UCL a

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum is prevalent among youth baseball pitchers. Repetitive shear forces during pitching are contributing factors. During the acceleration phase of pitching, the wrist joint moves from extension to flexion. The interplay between wrist position and elbow joint biomechanics has not been thoroughly examined, particularly within the radiocapitellar joint. This study aims to elucidate how different wrist positions affect the displacement of compression forces within the radiocapitellar joint during elbow extension and examine the change in co

BACKGROUND: In the United States, most school-aged children participate in some form of organized sports. Despite the advantages to social and physical development that organized sports may have, these activities also place a significant number of America's youth at risk for facial injuries. Pediatric facial fractures resulting from sports trauma are well documented within pediatric literature. Despite knowledge of the importance of safety equipment, there is a continued need for increased awareness about fracture patterns resulting from sports injuries to develop better strategies for their p
