BACKGROUND: Nonorganic erectile dysfunction (nonorganic ED) is a common subtype of ED characterized by impaired erectile function in the absence of identifiable organic causes. Although ED is increasingly recognized as a multidimensional condition involving interacting biological, psychological, relational, and sociocultural factors, how these influences are integrated within central neural systems in nonorganic ED remains incompletely understood. Objective neurobiological markers are therefore still lacking.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether patients with nonorganic ED exhibit abnormalities

BACKGROUND: Functional/dissociative seizures (FDS) resemble epileptic seizures but occur without EEG abnormalities. Affected patients report fatigue and gastrointestinal symptoms, seeking dietary approaches. Yet, nutrition's role in FDS remains poorly understood. Thus, this mixed-methods study analyzed Reddit comments to explore patients' dietary perceptions and emotions.
METHODS: Comments from r/PNESsupport were collected using specific keywords. Only English-language comments from inception to September 2025 were included. After short and irrelevant comments were removed, the remaining comm

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use among young adults has reached the highest levels ever recorded. Evidence indicates that acute Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) disrupts brain connectivity. Few studies have examined this on a whole-brain level. We examined the effects of a single moderate dose of THC on resting-state functional brain networks among young adult cannabis users.
METHODS: In a within-subject, double-blind, randomized study, 33 healthy occasional cannabis users received THC (7.5 mg, oral) and placebo before completing resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) during peak

PURPOSE: The relationship between pain experience and biomechanical impairment in chronic low back pain (LBP) is unclear. Among the broader pain literature, sex-based differences in pain experience have been established. However, it is unknown if sex-based differences in pain experience relates to compromised movement patterns for patients with chronic LBP. This study examined sex differences and whether there are sex-based associations between pain experience and biomechanical function in patients with chronic LBP.
METHODS: To capture the biomechanical variability among LBP patients, we quan

PURPOSE: ADHD and Autism are overrepresented in adults with bulimic-spectrum eating disorders (EDs) and are associated with unique underlying mechanisms and poorer treatment outcomes. This qualitative study explores how Neurodivergent and potentially Neurodivergent individuals with bulimic-spectrum EDs make sense of their (potential) Neurodivergence, its impact on their ED, and their treatment needs.
METHODS: Sixteen adults with bulimic-spectrum EDs who either self-reported a diagnosis of ADHD and/or Autism or scored highly on screeners (ASRS-Screener > 3; AQ-10 > 5) were interviewed. Data wa

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety is associated with sleep disturbance and insomnia. Mindfulness-based interventions, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction, have shown consistent anxiety reduction. Mindfulness training has been theorized to affect reinforcement learning, affecting habitual behaviors such as smoking and overeating, but a direct mechanistic link between the use of mindfulness training for anxiety reduction and improvement in sleep has not been studied. Moreover, the mechanisms by which mindfulness might affect worry and subsequent sleep disturbances have not been elucidated. This study pr

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Dysfunctional central autonomic nervous system network (CAN) at rest may result in aberrant autonomic responses to psychosocial stressors. We hypothesised that patients with primary microvascular angina (MVA) or Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) would exhibit a peculiar functional organisation of the CAN, potentially associated with psychological patterns.
METHODS: Patients underwent a psychosocial evaluation: a clinical diagnostic interview, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory form Y and Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36). The strength

The present narrative review addresses issues concerning the defining criteria and conceptual underpinnings of pain catastrophizing. To date, the concept of pain catastrophizing has been extensively used in many clinical and experimental contexts and it is considered as one of the most important psychological correlate of pain chronicity and disability. Although its extensive use, we are still facing important problems related to its defining criteria and conceptual understanding. At present, there is no general theoretical agreement of what catastrophizing really is. The lack of a consensus o

INTRODUCTION: Both children affected by nutritional and eating disorders (ED) and adults with bipolar disorder (BD) display symptoms of deficient emotional self-regulation, which can present in different forms. If we observe the clinical and developmental histories of individuals affected by EDs and BD, based on a cognitive systemic post-rationalist approach, we can hypothesise a continuum between the two disorders. The aim of this pilot study is to support the hypothesis - from an explanatory rather than a non-descriptive approach - that EDs and BD are the possible result of issues tied to bi

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, consisting of multiple involuntary movements (motor tics) and one or more vocal (phonic) tics. It affects up to one percent of children worldwide, of whom about one third continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. The central neural mechanisms of tic generation are not clearly understood, however recent neuroimaging investigations suggest impaired cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical activity during motor control. In the current manuscript, we will tackle the relatively under-investigated role of the peripheral autonomic nervous system,

Previous reports suggest that gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA(A)) receptors containing alpha1 subunits may play a pivotal role in mediating the discriminative stimulus effects of benzodiazepines (BZs). L-838,417 (7-tert-Butyl-3-(2,5-difluoro-phenyl)-6-(2-methyl-2H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-ylmethoxy)-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-b]pyridazine) is a GABA(A) receptor modulator with intrinsic efficacy in vitro at alpha2, alpha3, and alpha5 subunit-containing GABA(A) receptors, and little demonstrable intrinsic efficacy in vitro at alpha1 subunit-containing GABA(A) receptors. BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are severe and complex mental health conditions with high mortality, significant psychiatric comorbidity, and increasing global prevalence. ED behaviours (e.g., restriction, bingeing, purging) may function as adaptive strategies for affect regulation, management of trauma-related distress, and avoidance of embodied experience. While trauma-informed care emphasises safety, empowerment, and relational attunement, trauma in EDs is often held somatically and may remain inaccessible through verbal therapies alone. The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM)

Consciousness research often uses overlapping terms such as consciousness, awareness, conscious access, subjective experience, reportability, selfhood, and metacognition. This conceptual compression can make it difficult to distinguish different awareness-related processes or to identify which capacities are preserved, disrupted, or restored across altered states. This paper proposes an organizational framework for distinguishing awareness processes in terms of constrained access, representational coordination, adaptive regulation, and recursive self-modeling. The framework distinguishes three

Background: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) triggers profound metabolic and psychological adaptations during adolescence. This study investigated the relationships between resting energy expenditure (REE), body composition, physical activity (PA), and specific psychometric phenotypes in adolescent girls with AN compared to healthy, normal-weight (NW) peers. Methods: Sixteen adolescent girls with severe AN (16.1 ± 1.2 year) and 16 age-matched NW controls (15.6 ± 1.5 year) underwent clinical evaluations: anthropometry, bioelectrical impedance analysis for fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM), indirect ca

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a common chronic functional neuro-otological disorder characterized by persistent non-spinning dizziness, unsteadiness, and heightened sensitivity to upright posture, motion, and visually complex environments. Several conceptual models have been proposed to explain its persistence, including failure of readaptation after a destabilizing event, maladaptive multisensory integration with excessive visual or somatosensory weighting, and prediction-actual sensory mismatch with amplified prediction errors. This narrative review synthesizes neuroimag

The uncanny valley effect describes a phenomenon where humanoid, almost lifelike virtual agents evoke feelings of discomfort in the observers. The Pathogen Avoidance Hypothesis proposes that these feelings are based on a cognitive mechanism that originally evolved to motivate pathogen avoidance. Slight imperfections in virtual agents are thereby misconceived as cues of communicable diseases that elicit disgust and avoidance behavior. Whether uncanny entities also increase mucosal immune responses, particularly when immediate avoidance is impossible, currently remains elusive. The present study

UNLABELLED: Reciprocal neuronal connections exist between the internal organs of the body and the nervous system. These projections to and from the viscera play an essential role in maintaining and finetuning organ responses in order to sustain homeostasis and allostasis. Functional maps of brain regions participating in this bidirectional communication have been previously studied in awake humans and anesthetized rodents. To further refine the mechanistic understanding of visceral influence on brain states, however, new paradigms that allow for more invasive, and ultimately more informative,

Objectives: Recent survey data suggest that a high proportion of patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) experience pain, yet pain features in TS have not been previously investigated in a systematic manner. This article reviews the current understanding and impact of pain in TS as well as identifies possible areas for emphasis for future research on pain in TS. Methods: Using a comprehensive search strategy in two relevant research databases (PubMed and Scopus), we searched for relevant peer-reviewed, primary research articles, and review articles. Search terms used were Tourette syndrome, tic d

INTRODUCTION: Recurrences and diagnostic instability of panic disorder (PD) are common and have a negative effect on its long-term course. Developing a novel assessment tool for anxiety that can be used in a multimodal approach may improve these problems in panic disorder patients. This study assessed the feasibility of virtual reality-based assessment in panic disorder (VRA-PD).
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with PD (ANX group) and 28 healthy adults (CON group) participated in the study. VRA-PD consisted of four modules based on the key components of cognitive behavior therapy for an anxiety
