Hard- and soft-tissue changes following the treatment of growing patients with skeletal class III malocclusion using the lower-clear-plate based intermaxillary traction versus the removable mandibular retractor: a two-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Increased interest in intraoral devices like Bionator III, reverse twin block, and removable mandibular retractor (RMR), which modify tissues beneficially. The emerging Orthodontic Removable Traction Appliance (ORTA™) or the lower-clear-plate-based intermaxillary traction (LCP-IMT) has shown promising results, especially in stimulating maxillary growth and inhibiting mandibular growth in Class III malocclusion. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of the LCP-IMT against the RMR during the early correction of Class III deformities in growing patients regarding skeletal, dental,

Stereophotogrammetric evaluation of tooth-induced labial protrusion.

PURPOSE: To better manage dental treatment outcome, a previsualization of desired appearances can be used to understand patients' wishes. A deeper comprehension of labial modifications related to hard-tissue movements is advantageous. The purpose of the study was to evaluate tooth restoration-induced labial displacements in three dimensions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a group of 20 healthy Caucasian individuals, simulations of vestibular translations of maxillary anterior crowns were obtained by placing an acrylic resin veneer on the labial surfaces of maxillary incisors and canines. Three-dim

Long-term stability of conservative orthodontic treatment in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis and severe condylar resorption.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that can result in progressive destruction of the articular surfaces of the joints, including the temporomandibular joint. The purpose of this article is to report the conservative correction of a Class II malocclusion in a woman with rheumatoid arthritis. The patient was 32 years 6 months old at the start of treatment. She had a convex profile and a skeletal Class II jaw-base relationship caused by severe condylar resorption. An anterior open bite of -2.0 mm and an excessive overjet of 10.0 mm were observed. Severe crowding was shown in

Adverse effects of orthodontics: a report of 2 cases.

Adverse effects are results beyond the expected good outcomes of treatment. Like any other field in dentistry and medicine, orthodontics is not immune to such effects. The probability of adverse results in orthodontics increases when important rules and facts are ignored. To illustrate this, treatment and its adverse effects in 2 patients are discussed. In 1 young adult female, a palatally impacted maxillary canine was being moved into its place in the arch when it became ankylosed. Despite the cessation of movement, the orthodontist continued to apply mechanical forces to the canine for an ad

Orthodontic Treatment of Maxillary Incisors with Severe Root Resorption Caused by Bilateral Canine Impaction in a Class II Division 1 Patient.

This case report shows the successful alignment of bilateral impacted maxillary canines. A 12-year-old male with the chief complaint of the protrusion of his maxillary anterior teeth happened to have bilateral maxillary canine impaction on the labial side of his maxillary incisors. Four maxillary incisors showed severe root resorption because of the impacted canines. The patient was diagnosed as skeletal Class II malocclusion with proclined maxillary incisors. The impacted canine was carefully retracted using sectional buccal arch wires to avoid further root resorption of the maxillary incisor

Morphologic changes in the transverse dimension using the Fränkel appliance.

Anthropologic studies have shown that the incidence of malocclusion increases as societies become urbanized. Crowding seems to be one of the most common findings. Possible explanations for this have been heredity, dietary changes, poor eruption patterns, and mouth breathing, among others. Many clinicians begin treatment early in order to minimize this maldevelopment. Various early-treatment approaches have included serial extraction, lingual holding arches, palatal expansion, functional appliances, partial fixed appliances, and headgear. Expansion with the functional regulator offers one solut

Temporomandibular disorders with skeletal open bite treated with stabilization splint and zygomatic miniplate anchorage: a case report.

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and skeletal open bite. First, the patient was treated with a stabilization splint to stabilize the condyles in centric relation and to alleviate TMD signs and symptoms. After making a definitive diagnosis from postsplint records, orthodontic treatment was initiated. Titanium miniplates were placed at bilateral zygomatic buttresses and used as orthodontic anchorage for molar intrusion and distalization. The treatment was completed after 30 months. Satisfactory appearance and function were achieved for t

Orthodontic and orthognathic management of a complex mandibular asymmetry.

The application of a combined surgical-orthodontic procedure for the treatment of major facial deformities (eg, asymmetries) and associated malocclusions has become an increasingly prevalent treatment modality over the past few decades. Development of sound conjoint treatment principles made possible the correction of skeletal and dental dysplasias that were unyielding to either surgical or orthodontic treatment alone. The presence and severity of dentofacial asymmetries has been the subject of many commentaries and investigations. Treatment of facial asymmetry has always been a challenge with

Surgical treatment modality for facial esthetics in an obstructive sleep apnea patient with protrusive upper lip and acute nasolabial angle.

For patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) offers a good treatment option by physically expanding the skeletal framework. However, facial esthetics can be aggravated by MMA in patients with OSAS who have a normally positioned maxilla, a protrusive upper lip, and an acute nasolabial angle. Therefore, surgical treatment planning should be customized according to diverse skeletodental and soft-tissue patterns to produce a favorable change in facial esthetics and sleep function in patients with OSAS. In this case report, good treatment res
