This case report describes the dental treatment performed under general anesthesia for a boy with Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS), a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder. The main symptoms of SLS are congenital ichthyosis, limb paraplegia or tetraplegia, and intellectual disability. The main concerns regarding the administration of general anesthesia to patients with SLS include difficulty with adhesion of the electrocardiogram electrodes and intravenous (IV) catheter dressings due to ichthyosis and heat intolerance secondary to hypohidrosis. Although it was first described approximately 7

Heterozygous mutations in the RUNX2 (CBFA1) gene cause cleidocranial dysplasia, characterized by multiple supernumerary teeth. This suggests that Runx2 inhibits successional tooth formation. However, in Runx2 knockout mice, molar development arrests at the late bud stage, and lower molars are more severely affected than upper ones. We have proposed that compensation by Runx3 may be involved. We compared the molar phenotypes of Runx2/Runx3 double-knockouts with those of Runx2 knockouts, but found no indication of such compensation. Shh and its mediators Ptc1, Ptc2, and Gli1 were down-regulated

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Extraction of cheek teeth (CT) by the conventional repulsion technique requires general anaesthesia and carries a high rate of post operative complications. Consequently, an alternative method of extraction, i.e. orally in standing horses, was evaluated.
HYPOTHESIS: The need for and risks of general anaesthesia could be avoided and post extraction sequelae reduced by performing extractions orally in standing horses.
METHODS: One hundred mainly younger horses (median age 8, range 2-18 years) with firmly attached CT that required extraction because of apical infec

This report describes the orthodontic treatment of a 14-year-old boy who had 3 impacted maxillary teeth (right canine, left central incisor, and left second molar), 2 supernumerary teeth, and an odontoma. The treatment protocol involved surgical intervention followed by sequential traction of the 3 impacted teeth. The patient's smile dramatically improved after orthodontic treatment. Good posterior occlusion was achieved. However, long-term monitoring of the stability and periodontal health is critical.

Treatment of twins each with one impacted maxillary central incisor and a mesiodens is described. Treatment included rapid expansion, extraction of the mesiodens, surgical exposure of the impacted central incisor, and its forced eruption. The impacted incisor was brought into functional position in one patient but was lost in the other because of insufficient root length and high mobility. Orthodontic, genetic, and periodontal considerations of these 2 cases are evaluated.

OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to delineate the prevalence, clinical, and 3-dimentional radiographic characteristics of adult supernumerary teeth (ST found) in a Chinese non-syndromic, dental population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were utilized to identify adult patients with ST in a tertiary referral dental hospital between June 2012 and December 2018. CBCT scan coupled with 3-dimentional reconstruction was used to characterize the detailed location, morphology, orientation of ST, and their relationship with adjacent teeth and neig

BACKGROUND: Mesiodens can be associated with several complications. The optimal age for treatment, however, remains controversial.
AIM: To investigate the three-dimensional (3D) positions of mesiodens using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and determine the association of eruption-related complications of mesiodens with these 3D positions and delayed development of the central incisors.
DESIGN: In total, 293 Korean children (383 supernumerary teeth) aged 4-10 years with no history of orthodontic treatment were included. CBCT and panoramic radiography data for all patients were retrospect

To date, five types of maxillary tooth transposition are described in the international literature (canine/first premolar; canine/lateral incisor; lateral incisor/central incisor; canine/central incisor site; canine/first molar site), although the latter two are indeed extreme displacements and not true transpositions. In the present article a sixth type of transposition is recognized and described: the maxillary molar transposition (MxM3M2 and MxM4M3, respectively). Three cases of this anomaly were presented. The occurrence is extremely rare, about 0.04 percent in a sample of 7,000 orthodonti

Skulls of 1,901 Eastern Atlantic harbor seals (Phoca vitulina vitulina) were systematically studied for externally visible dental anomalies and lesions. The sample comprised 927 males and 974 female individuals, with age at death ranging between 1 week and 25 years. Most of the skulls originated from animals collected in 1988, when the population suffered from a mass mortality event caused by the phocine distemper virus (PDV). Mean age (± SD) of females (6.7 ± 6.4 years) was higher (p = 0.002) than that of males (5.9 ± 5.2 years). In 264 individuals, one or more teeth were missing either conge

PURPOSE: Radiographs play an important role in the diagnosis of anomalies and pathology of the oral structures of young children as well as in the interception and management of developmental problems in the dentition. The occlusal film, commonly indicated in the young child, is a helpful tool in establishing a baseline and in revealing certain region-specific dental concerns in a timely fashion. The purpose of this retrospective study was to perform a comprehensive examination of maxillary occlusal radiographs in a clinical pediatric population and to determine the prevalence of dental anomal

Impaction of a central maxillary incisor is relatively rare and, consequently, poses all the more problems to the diagnosing practitioner. The etiology, when known, can implicate the presence of an obstacle hindering eruption or a trauma to the temporary dentition. Central incisor impaction is revealed during routine examination or following concern on the part of parents who have noticed that a tooth is missing on the arch. When confronted with this anomaly, the practitioner should determine the precise position of the unerupted tooth and offer a customized treatment protocol. Whenever possib
