Evidence on the prevalence, incidence, mortality and trends of human papilloma virus-associated cancers in sub-Saharan Africa: systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma virus (HPV) associated cervical cancer remains a global concern particular, in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where the impact is felt most. Evidence show that many other cancers such as vaginal, anal, oropharyngeal, penile are because of persistent infection with HPV especially, high-risk types. AIM: We mapped evidence on the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and the trends of human papillomavirus-related cancers in SSA. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from several databases including PubMed, Google scholar, Science Direct, and CINAHL and MEDLI

Diagnosing severe falciparum malaria in parasitaemic African children: a prospective evaluation of plasma PfHRP2 measurement.

BACKGROUND: In African children, distinguishing severe falciparum malaria from other severe febrile illnesses with coincidental Plasmodium falciparum parasitaemia is a major challenge. P. falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (PfHRP2) is released by mature sequestered parasites and can be used to estimate the total parasite burden. We investigated the prognostic significance of plasma PfHRP2 and used it to estimate the malaria-attributable fraction in African children diagnosed with severe malaria. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Admission plasma PfHRP2 was measured prospectively in African children (fro

A new tent trap for sampling exophagic and endophagic members of the Anopheles gambiae complex.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito sampling methods are essential for monitoring and evaluating malaria vector control interventions. In urban Dar es Salaam, human landing catch (HLC) is the only method sufficiently sensitive for monitoring malaria-transmitting Anopheles. HLC is labour intensive, cumbersome, hazardous, and requires such intense supervision that is difficulty to sustain on large scales. METHODS: Novel tent traps were developed as alternatives to HLC. The Furvela tent, designed in Mozambique, incorporates a CDC Light trap (LT) components, while two others from Ifakara, Tanzania (designs A an

Cross-Cutting Implementation Strategies to Integrate Hypertension Care Into HIV Care in Africa: Results From Six Country Studies in the HLB-SIMPLe Alliance.

INTRODUCTION: The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), in 2020, funded six implementation research trials in Africa (Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia) to test implementation strategies for integrating evidence-based cardiovascular disease (CVD) care into primary care for people living with HIV. We identified cross-site implementation strategies used by the six trials to integrate CVD care for people living with HIV in these diverse settings. METHODS: Between December 2022 and September 2023, we reviewed protocols for each trial and followed up with s

Virological failure and treatment interruption among people with unsuppressed viral load on antiretroviral therapy: a cross-sectional analysis of Population-based HIV Impact Assessment surveys in seven sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: Viral load suppression among people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains a priority in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to quantify virological failure versus interruption in treatment among people aged 15 years or older with unsuppressed viral load. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis of nationally representative Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (PHIA) household surveys conducted in Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe during 2019-23, we included participants aged 15 years or older with HIV who met the harmonised PHIA analytica

Impact of an international HIV funding crisis on HIV infections and mortality in low-income and middle-income countries: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: International funding for HIV has been crucial in reducing new HIV transmissions and deaths. Five countries providing over 90% of international HIV funding have announced reductions in international aid of between 8% and 70% between 2025 and 2026, with the US Government pausing aid with immediate effect on Jan 20, 2025. We investigated the potential impact of these funding reductions on HIV incidence and mortality through mathematical modelling. METHODS: We used 26 country-validated Optima HIV models (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bhutan, Cambodia, Colombia, Costa Rica, C

Cannabis and amphetamine use among school-going adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: a multi-country analysis of prevalence and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Global evidence indicates that early onset of illicit substance use among adolescents and emerging adults is associated with negative mental-health related-outcomes that can persist into adulthood. However, the lack of quality regional data on adolescent illicit substance use and its determinants remains a common barrier to evidence-based policy-making and the development of school-based interventions in Africa. The purpose of our study was to estimate the prevalence and describe the correlates of cannabis and amphetamine use among school-going adolescents in eight sub-Saharan Afri

Intimate partner violence as a predictor of marital disruption in sub-Saharan Africa: A multilevel analysis of demographic and health surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence has gained momentum as health, social, and human right issue across the globe. Women within sub-Saharan Africa often do not report any case of violence due to the acceptance of violence which is rooted in their socio-cultural beliefs and practices. With a high prevalence of marital disruption in sub-Saharan Africa, it is important that we understand the role intimate partner violence plays in this phenomenon. Hence, this present study assessed the association between intimate partner violence and marital disruption among women in sub-Saharan Africa. MET

An imprecise probability approach-based determination of over-represented southern African plant genera and families used in ethnopharmacology.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The analyses of patterns of over-representation of southern African traditional medicinal plants at the genus and family level provide information about the differences in plant use among southern African countries and disease categories. 'Over-representation' refers to the phenomenon whereby the proportion of plants belonging to a taxonomic group is higher in ethnobotanical pharmacopoeia than in the total flora. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to use the Imprecise Dirichlet Model (IDM) to analyse data from ten southern African countries to establish how ove

The RHD Action Small Grants Programme: Small Investment, Big Return!

Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) remains endemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) despite its virtual elimination in high-income countries. RHD Action was launched to amplify global efforts to control RHD in 2015 by World Heart Federation and Reach, with demonstration projects in Uganda and Tanzania, and support from Medtronic Foundation. The Small Grants Programme focuses on three domains: People and Communities, Medicines and Technologies, and Systems and Services. It is designed to support patient and community groups in promoting awareness, advocacy, and to build health workers' ca

Demonstration of event position reconstruction based on diffusion in the NEXT-white detector.

Since 2010, the trypanorhynch tapeworm family Rhinoptericolidae Carvajal & Campbell, 1975 has housed just two distinctive, monotypic genera (Rhinoptericola Carvajal & Campbell, 1975 and Nataliella Palm, 2010). However, global collections of tapeworms from sharks and rays over the last more than three decades brought to light the need for major revision of the family by suggesting a much greater species-level diversity for the nominal genus Rhinoptericola. Through synonymy and the description of new species, the number of species in the genus is increased from one to eight. A phylogenetic analy

mUzima Mobile Electronic Health Record (EHR) System: Development and Implementation at Scale.

BACKGROUND: The predominant implementation paradigm of electronic health record (EHR) systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) relies on standalone system installations at facilities. This implementation approach exacerbates the digital divide, with facilities in areas with inadequate electrical and network infrastructure often left behind. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies have been implemented to extend the reach of digital health, but these systems largely add to the problem of siloed patient data, with few seamlessly interoperating with the EHR systems that are now scaled nat

A randomized, double-blind, phase 2b study to investigate the efficacy, safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of a single-dose regimen of ferroquine with artefenomel in adults and children with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

BACKGROUND: For uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria, highly efficacious single-dose treatments are expected to increase compliance and improve treatment outcomes, and thereby may slow the development of resistance. The efficacy and safety of a single-dose combination of artefenomel (800 mg) plus ferroquine (400/600/900/1200 mg doses) for the treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria were evaluated in Africa (focusing on children ≤ 5 years) and Asia. METHODS: The study was a randomized, double-blind, single-dose, multi-arm clinical trial in patients aged > 6 months to < 70 years

Impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years: A global decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the burden of cancer is increasing. We aimed to assess the impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: We used the decomposition method to estimate the impact of ageing, population growth, and epidemiological change on cancer-related DALYs from 1990 to 2019, stratified by 204 countries/territories and by their sociodemographic index (SDI). This approach separates the net effect of population ageing from population growth and change in age-specific DALY rates. RESULTS: Cancer-related DALYs among indi

Predictors of HIV reservoir size and decay dynamics in early-treated paediatric infection: a prospective, multicentre longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Early antiretroviral therapy (ART) after perinatal HIV infection can restrict reservoir size and diversity, offering potential for remission. We evaluated HIV-1 DNA dynamics up to four years of age and predictors of reservoir size in early-treated African children. METHODS: In this prospective, multicentre cohort study, infants with perinatal HIV from South Africa, Mozambique, and Mali who initiated ART before 6 months of age and within 3 months of diagnosis were enrolled. Children were followed at 2, 6, 12, and 24 weeks, then biannually for 4 years. Total HIV-1 DNA in PBMCs was q

Spatial disparities and determinants of obstetric fistula among childbearing women in sub-Saharan Africa: A geospatial regression approach.

OBJECTIVE: Obstetric fistula is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity and continues to pose a significant public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Despite its serious and devastating effects, there are a few studies that describe the spatial distribution, pooled prevalence, and factors associated with obstetric fistula in SSA. Understanding the burden and geographic variation is important for targeted interventions, efficient resource allocation, and progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 3. The aim of the present study was to assess geospatial variations, poole

A stepped-wedge randomised trial on the impact of early ART initiation on HIV-patients' economic outcomes in Eswatini.

BACKGROUND: Since 2015, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends immediate initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for all HIV-positive patients. Epidemiological evidence points to important health benefits of immediate ART initiation; however, the policy’s impact on the economic aspects of patients' lives remains unknown. METHODS: We conducted a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised controlled trial in Eswatini to determine the causal impact of immediate ART initiation on patients’ individual- and household-level economic outcomes. Fourteen healthcare facilities were non-randomly matched
