Prolonged grief disorder and depression in widows due to the Rwandan genocide.

Should pathological grief be viewed as a nosological category, separate from other forms of mental diseases? Diagnostic criteria for "Prolonged Grief Disorder" (PGD) have recently been specified by Prigerson and her coworkers. We interviewed a total of 40 widows who had lost their husbands during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. We assessed Major Depression using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) and prolonged grief reactions with the PG-13. In order to examine the distinctiveness of the two syndromes we performed a multitrait correlational matrix analysis using modifie

Tuberculosis laboratory capacity building in the WHO African Region: The past, the present and the future: A Viewpoint.

Tuberculosis remains a leading infectious disease killer in the World Health Organization African Region, with 2.5 million cases and 404,000 deaths in 2023, including 112,000 people with HIV. There is slow progress with only 42% of the 75% targeted reduction in death by 2025. Out of 60,266 estimated multidrug-resistant TB cases in 2023, only 22,515 were notified. Laboratory diagnostic services in the African region still need urgent attention. By 2005, the new smear-positive case detection rate was nearly 51%, falling short of the 70% target. By 2015, the benchmark for one microscopy center pe

Prevalence of potential mediators of artemisinin resistance in African isolates of Plasmodium falciparum.

BACKGROUND: The devastating public health impact of malaria has prompted the need for effective interventions. Malaria control gained traction after the introduction of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). However, the emergence of artemisinin (ART) partial resistance in Southeast Asia and emerging reports of delayed parasite sensitivity to ACT in African parasites signal a gradual trend towards treatment failure. Monitoring the prevalence of mutations associated with artemisinin resistance in African populations is necessary to stop resistance in its tracks. Mutations in Plasmodium fa

Association Between Girl-child Marriage and Intimate Partner Violence in Sub-Saharan Africa: Insights From a Multicountry Analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys.

While considerable attention has been given to the health consequences of child marriage in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), limited studies exist on its impact on intimate partner violence (IPV) in the region. We address this gap by examining the link between child marriage and IPV. We tested our study hypothesis using demographic and health survey data of 28,206 young women aged 20-24 years from 16 SSA countries with recent surveys (2015-2019). Binary logistic regression models were used to examine the effect of child marriage on IPV. Child marriage prevalence ranged from 13.5% in Rwanda, in East A

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Women's Reports of Past-Year Intimate Partner Violence: A Comparative Analysis of Six East African National Surveys.

Violence against women, in all its forms, has been acknowledged as a violation of basic human rights and research evidence shows that it could lead to adverse health consequences. In this study we aimed to determine the prevalence and coexistence of different forms of IPV as well as examine individual-level factors associated with ever experiencing any form of IPV in the 12 months preceding the survey using the most recent Demographic Health Survey data from six East African countries. Results show that the prevalence ranged between 16.5% (Burundi) and 29.3% (Uganda) for emotional, 16.8% (Ethi

Predicting the effects of climate change on Schistosoma mansoni transmission in eastern Africa.

BACKGROUND: Survival and fitness attributes of free-living and sporocyst schistosome life-stages and their intermediate host snails are sensitive to water temperature. Climate change may alter the geographical distribution of schistosomiasis by affecting the suitability of freshwater bodies for hosting parasite and snail populations. METHODS: We have developed an agent-based model of the temperature-sensitive stages of the Schistosoma mansoni and intermediate host snail lifecycles. The model was run using low, moderate and high warming climate projections over eastern Africa. For each climate

Circumcision in men and the prevention of HIV infection: a 'meta-analysis' revisited.

There is debate on the role of male circumcision in HIV transmission. Most case-control and cohort studies from Africa have shown an association between a lack of circumcision and an increased risk of HIV infection in men. The evidence is conflicting, however, with cross-sectional surveys from Tanzania and Rwanda either showing no relationship or an association in the opposite direction. A recent review and meta-analysis of the literature concluded that the risk of HIV infection was lower in uncircumcised men (combined odds ratio 0.94, 95% confidence interval 0.89 to 0.99). However, the analys

Applying the Exploration Preparation Implementation Sustainment (EPIS) Framework to the Kigali Imbereheza Project for Rwandan Adolescents Living With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan African adolescents living with HIV face challenges to antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. Poor mental health drives nonadherence but can be improved with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT delivered by peers may strengthen effects while building capacity for sustainment in low-income countries. This case study retrospectively applied the Exploration Preparation Implementation Sustainment framework to characterize the execution of the Kigali Imbereheza Project, a 2-arm individually randomized group controlled trial of Trauma-Informed Adherence-Enhanced CBT (TI-

Longitudinal evaluation of markers of inflammation in HIV-positive and HIV-negative Rwandan women.

OBJECTIVES: African women are disproportionately affected by HIV infection and may experience non-AIDS-related complications associated with inflammation. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), d-dimer and transthyretin have been examined as inflammatory markers elsewhere, but it is unclear how they change over time in HIV-negative or HIV-positive African women with or without antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. METHODS: We examined hsCRP, d-dimer and transthyretin levels at baseline and at follow-up of ≥2 years in 185 HIV-negative and 510 HIV-positive Rwandan women who were ART na

In vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial activity of three Rwandan medicinal plants and identification of their active compounds.

In our previous study, we reported the interesting in vitro antiplasmodial activity of some Rwandan plant extracts. This gave rise to the need for these extracts to also be evaluated in vivo and to identify the compounds responsible for their antiplasmodial activity. The aim of our study was, on the one hand, to evaluate the antiplasmodial activity in vivo and the safety of the selected Rwandan medicinal plants used in the treatment of malaria, with the objective of promoting the development of improved traditional medicines and, on the other hand, to identify the active ingredients in the pla

[Ciprofloxacin in the treatment of dysentery caused by type 1 Shigella dysenteriae during an epidemic in Rwandan refugees in Goma in 1994].

There was an outbreak of dysentery caused by type I Shigella dysenteriae among Rwandan refugees at Goma, in what was then Zaire, in 1994. The causal organism was resistant to all antibiotics available from the public health authorities. The only effective antimicrobial agent available was ciprofloxacin. It was given to 326 inpatients at the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Center, mostly children under the age of 5, pregnant women and immunocompromised patients. A standard dose schedule was used: 1 g ciprofloxacin per day in two doses for 5 days for adults, 250 mg for children weighing less than

The Epidemiology and Impact of Hypoxemia in Sub-Saharan Africa: Prevalence, Practices, and Outcomes.

Rationale: The epidemiology of hypoxemia in sub-Saharan Africa is largely unknown. Objectives: To determine the prevalence, clinical care, and outcomes for hospitalized hypoxemic adults in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: We prospectively screened all adults admitted to five hospitals in Kenya, Malawi, and Rwanda over four months; identified those with hypoxemia (defined as oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximetry [SpO2] < 90% or receipt of oxygen therapy); and followed hypoxemic patients to discharge. Results: Of the 24,724 adult patients admitted, 1,739 (7%) were hypoxemic on admission. T

Prevalence, source and risk of antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of Lake Tai (China) deciphered by metagenomic assembly: A comparison with other global lakes.

Lakes are one of the natural reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in environments. Long retention times in lakes potentially allow ARGs to persist and may create increased opportunities for the emergence of resistant pathogens. In this study, we investigated the prevalence, source and dissemination risk of ARGs in the sediments of a typical urban lake, Lake Tai (China) which has been a drastic example of water pollution with eutrophication in the world due to its proliferated cyanobacterial blooms. High-throughput profilings of ARGs in the sediments of Lake Tai were characterized w

The Formation of the Eastern Africa Rabies Network: A Sub-Regional Approach to Rabies Elimination.

International rabies networks have been formed in many of the canine-rabies endemic regions around the world to create unified and directed regional approaches towards elimination. The aim of the first sub-regional Eastern Africa rabies network meeting, which included Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda, was to discuss how individual country strategies could be coordinated to address the unique challenges that are faced within the network. The Stepwise Approach towards Rabies Elimination and the Global Dog Rabies Elimination Pathway tool were used to stimulate discussion and planning
