Associations of the microRNA gene polymorphisms with the risk of non-syndromic supernumerary teeth in a Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: Non-syndromic supernumerary teeth (NSST) are a common type of dental anomaly. microRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in craniofacial and tooth development. Therefore, we hypothesized that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of miRNAs may be associated with the susceptibility of NSST. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four miRNA SNPs (rs2910164, rs11614913, rs2043556, and rs2682818) were selected, and their associations with NSST susceptibility were evaluated in a case-control study (163 NSST patients and 326 healthy controls). RESULTS: rs2910164 was significantly associated with a risk

Bilateral maxillary fused second and third molars: a rare occurrence.

This case report describes the diagnosis and endodontic therapy of maxillary fused second and third molars, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). A 31-year-old Chinese male, with no contributory medical or family/social history, presented with throbbing pain in the maxillary right molar area following an unsuccessful attempted tooth extraction. Clinical examination revealed what appeared initially to be a damaged large extra cusp on the buccal aspect of the distobuccal cusp of the second molar. However, CBCT revealed that a third molar was fused to the second molar. Unexpectedly, the max

Retained tooth in the nasal cavity: a rare cause of nasal congestion.

A 59-year-old man presented with unilateral nasal congestion and discharge. Clinical examination revealed a mass in the floor of the nasal cavity. Sinus CT indicated a retained tooth or a dermoid cyst. It was removed by endoscopic surgery. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of a retained tooth. At follow-up, the patient reported no nasal symptoms. A retained nasal tooth is rare, and the symptoms are variable. It can resemble other diseases such as chronic rhinosinusitis. Surgical removal is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and eliminate symptoms.

Genetic basis of dentigerous cysts associated with supernumerary teeth: A narrative review.

In the present study, we sought to: (a) analyze the p53 gene status in dentigerous cysts (DC) associated with supernumerary teeth (ST) in a pair of siblings with ST, of whom one developed a DC; and (b) conduct a narrative review of the literature on ST associated with DC. Blood samples were obtained, and the isolated DNA was used to amplify exons 4-8 of the p53 gene using specific primers, and subsequently sequenced. No mutations were identified in the coding regions of the p53 gene. A review of the literature revealed a prevalence of DC associated with ST to be as high as 13.6%, and that 83%

Concomitant hypo-hyperdontia with dens invaginatus.

Although developmental anomalies of tooth number are quite common in permanent dentition, concomitant occurrence of hypohyperdontia is a very rare mixed numeric anomalous condition of teeth. Very few cases of this condition have been reported in the English literature. Here we report such a rare case noted in a 26 year-old male dental graduate with no other associated systemic condition or syndrome.

Maxillary diastema: indications for treatment.

1. In comparing characteristics associated with the presence or absence of diastema at the age of 16 years, generalized spacing was the only significant factor. 2. In the 230 children who had a diastema of 0.5 mm. or greater at age 9, there was a significant association between the diastema and the amounts of crowding or spacing at age 16. 3. A clinician must analyze the individual case in order to determine whether the diastema is to close through normal development or if there exists a likelihood of its persistence.
