A clinical dilemma: Performing or avoiding root instrumentation in the treatment of the acute phase of endodontic-periodontal lesions? A case report.

BACKGROUND: This study presents the diagnois, management, and tissue response to an acute periodontal lesion with deep pocketing affecting a maxillary central incisor in a young patient devoid of caries or a history of periodontitis. METHODS: Clinical and radiographic examinations facilitated the diagnosis of the pathology as an endoperiodontal lesion (EPL) with root damage, exhibiting supracrestal invasive root resorption. Orthograde endodontic therapy was employed to decontaminate and seal the endodontic space. The resorptive site was treated through the endodontic access, debrided, and sea

Using Standardised International Oral Health-Related Datasets in 6 Countries.

INTRODUCTION: Oral diseases affect a significant proportion of the world's population, yet international comparisons involving oral health outcomes have often been limited due to differences in the way country-level primary data are collected. In response to this, the World Dental Federation (FDI) Oral Health Observatory project was launched with the goal of collecting and producing standardised international data on oral health across countries. The aim of this descriptive cross-sectional study was to examine associations between self-reported general health and a range of factors (sociodemog

Tooth Development Associated with Mutations in Hereditary Vitamin D-Resistant Rickets.

Hereditary vitamin D-resistant rickets (HVDRR) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations at the level of the vitamin D receptor ( VDR) gene. The disease is characterized by refractory hypocalcemia, elevated serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D, retarded growth, sparse body hair (sometimes alopecia), premature tooth loss, enlarged pulp chambers, thin dentine, and hypoplastic enamel. The aims of this study were 1) to document the dental development of children with HVDRR in association with the mutation type within the VDR and 2) to evaluate the association between dental development an

Periodontal effects of surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion evaluated clinically and with cone-beam computerized tomography: 6-month preliminary results.

INTRODUCTION: Transverse maxillary deficiency is frequently observed in patients who seek orthodontic treatment. In skeletally mature patients, transverse maxillary deficiency can be treated with surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE). Forces delivered by the expander produce areas of compression in the periodontal ligament, which could lead to alveolar bone resorption and possible changes in the attachment level. The aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the periodontal effects of SARPE by means of a complete clinical evaluation and cone-beam computerized tomogra

Fine mapping of the neurally expressed gene SOX14 to human 3q23, relative to three congenital diseases.

Members of the Sox gene family encode transcription factors that have diverse and important functions during development. We have recently described the cloning of chick and mouse Sox14 and the expression of these genes in a population of ventral interneurons in the embryonic spinal cord. We report here the cloning and sequencing of the human orthologue of Sox14. Human SOX14 shows remarkable sequence conservation compared with orthologues from other vertebrate species and probably mirrors the expression of these genes in the developing brain and spinal cord. Using radiation hybrid mapping and

Performance of self-reported measures for periodontitis in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the performance of self-report against the reference standard of clinically defined periodontitis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) after accounting for factors associated with periodontitis. METHODS: Six self-report periodontitis questions were evaluated in patients with RA and OA. Questions were validated against a reference standard of severe and moderate-to-severe periodontitis based on full-mouth examination. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the performance of: 1) self-report alone; 2) age, sex, educa

Adjunctive use of tetracycline fibers with nonsurgical periodontal therapy in an adult with Down syndrome: a case report.

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are susceptible to severe periodontal disease, due to immune alterations related to functional defects of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes. The adjunctive use of locally delivered antimicrobials has been proven to be beneficial, especially in areas where mechanical therapy might fail. This article describes the management of a patient with DS who had aggressive periodontitis. The treatment used a local drug delivery system with tetracycline fibers as an adjunct to scaling and root planing.

Evaluation of a bioactive glass alloplast in treating periodontal intrabony defects.

This study evaluated the use OF bioactive glass (BG) for repairing/regenerating periodontal intrabony defects. Fourteen systemically healthy patients participated. Each patient had 2 contralateral sites with > or = 6 mm clinical probing depth and radiographic evidence of an intrabony defect. One defect was treated with flap debridement plus BG (test) and the other with flap debridement alone (control). Baseline measurements included gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), position of the free gingival margin (S/FGM), clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), and mobility. At the tim

Challenges and Solutions in Delivering Preventive Periodontal Care to Older Adults in Community and Long-Term Residential Care Settings: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Preventive periodontal care is essential for older people in the community to reduce the risk of tooth loss, systemic diseases, and decreased quality of life. Despite its importance, older people in assisted living, home-based care (HBC), daycare, and other community settings face barriers to effective preventive periodontal care, including mobility, cognitive, and caregiver knowledge issues. Although these challenges are being recognized more and more, the evidence on barriers and solutions for delivering consistent preventive periodontal care remains scattered across different st

Impact of periodontitis on oral health-related quality of life of patients with psoriatic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Since oral health issues can have a negative influence on a person's physical functioning, social status, and wellbeing, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) becomes an indispensable part of overall health. Previous published studies report that periodontitis (PD) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) have a significant negative impact on OHRQoL. Based on these findings, it would be reasonable to assume that patients with coexisting PsA and PD would see a comparable or maybe synergistic effect on their OHRQoL. Hence, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the OHRQoL and its im

Feasibility of a Real-Time Clinical Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence Framework for Pain Detection and Localization From the Brain.

BACKGROUND: For many years, clinicians have been seeking for objective pain assessment solutions via neuroimaging techniques, focusing on the brain to detect human pain. Unfortunately, most of those techniques are not applicable in the clinical environment or lack accuracy. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test the feasibility of a mobile neuroimaging-based clinical augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) framework, CLARAi, for objective pain detection and also localization direct from the patient's brain in real time. METHODS: Clinical dental pain was triggered in 21 patients
