The hormonal and nervous control of colour change in the eel has been investigated. The only bioactive forms of MSH found in eel pituitary extracts or secreted by eel pituitary cultures were forms of alpha-MSH; no beta-MSH was detected. After transfer of eels from a black to a white background, the melanin concentration in skin melanophores was accompanied by a rapid decline in plasma alpha-MSH titres. Hypophysectomy resulted in melanin concentration, and pituitary extracts injected into hypophysectomized eels caused melanin dispersion. This effect was eliminated if the pituitary extracts were

This study presents the most comprehensive phylogenetic analysis to date of the high-Andean fish genus Orestias, a diverse and largely endemic group, using Genotype-by-Sequencing (GBS) and extensive sampling across the full range of the genus, from northern Peru to northern Chile. In particular, the evolutionary relationships and population structure within the O. agassii species complex were reconstructed. Phylogenetic analyses consistently recovered three major clades: a newly identified Northern clade, the Lake Titicaca radiation, and the O. agassii species complex. The genus originated aro

The scientific exploration of the capacity of fishes to experience pain has grown since the first identification of nociceptors in rainbow trout in 2002. In the early years up to 2010 anatomical and electrophysiological evidence was gathered that demonstrated that the characteristics of peripheral and central nervous system responses were comparable to mammals. Combined with behavioural investigations where fishes exhibited anomalous responses to painful treatment that were ameliorated by pain-relieving drugs subsequent studies were fuelled by this convincing evidence. More contemporary studie

Fish rely on innate immunity, including antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), to combat pathogens. Piscidins are a common AMP family in fish. This study identifies and characterizes a novel piscidin (Gbpis) from gilthead seabream, highlighting its structural uniqueness, antimicrobial function, and immunomodulatory potential. The gbpis cDNA contains a 183-bp open reading frame encoding a 60-amino-acid precursor, classified as a class 1 piscidin. The mature 22-residue peptide (2314.8 Da; pI 10.11) features a disulfide bridge (Cys9-Cys16) critical for activity. Tissue-specific expression analysis reveal

[Cu(NN1)2]ClO4 is a copper (I) complex, where NN1 is an imine ligand 6-((quinolin-2-ylmethylene) amino)-2H-chromen-2-one obtained by derivatization of natural compound coumarin, developed for the treatment of infectious diseases that affect salmonids. In previous research, we showed that the Cu(I) coordination complex possesses antibacterial activity against Flavobacterium psychrophilum, providing protection against this pathogen in rainbow trout during challenge assays (with an RPS of 50%). In the present study, the effects of administering [Cu(NN1)2]ClO4 to Oncorhynchus mykiss over a 60-days

Salmonid alphavirus (SAV) infection of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) causes pancreas disease (PD) with typical inflammatory responses, such as necrosis of the exocrine pancreas, cardiomyopathy and skeletal myopathy. However, the pathogenic mechanism underlying SAV infection is still unclear. Inflammation may cause damage to the body, but it is a defense response against infection by pathogenic microorganisms, of which nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) is the main regulator. This study revealed that SAV can activate NF-κB, of which the viral nonstructural pr

Previous research has characterized the important role of aldehyde oxidases (AOX) in biotransformation of N-heterocyclic therapeutic drugs and environmental contaminants in mammals. Research pertaining to AOX activity in non-mammalian vertebrates, however, is scarce, despite its biological role as a potentially important metabolic pathway for xenobiotics. One of the limiting factors of research on AOX is that available photometric methods are relatively insensitive, limited in throughput, and prone to cross-reactivity from other enzymes. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel and impro

Water managers are increasingly using environmental flows (e-flows) as a tool to improve ecological conditions downstream from impoundments. Recent studies have called for e-flow approaches that explicitly consider impacts on hydrogeomorphic processes when developing management alternatives. Process-based approaches are particularly relevant in river systems that have been highly modified and where water supplies are over allocated. One-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic models can be used to resolve hydrogeomorphic processes at different spatial and temporal scales to supp

Aquaculture is currently one of the best prospects to help meet the growing need for protein in the human diet. However, aquaculture development and production result in consequences for the environment and also impact other productive activities. Salmon and trout cage culture has required the use of large quantities of pharmaceuticals in order to control outbreaks and the persistence of different pathogens, including sea lice (parasitic copepods), which cause economic losses of around 0.39 € Kg-1 of salmon produced. The pharmaceuticals currently used for the control of sea lice (cypermethrin,

Traces of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and other chemicals are demonstrated in effluents from sewage treatment plants (STPs) and they may affect quality of surface water and eventually drinking water. Treatment of effluents with granular activated carbon (GAC) or ozone to improve removal of APIs and other contaminants was evaluated at two Swedish STPs, Käppala and Uppsala (88 and 103 APIs analyzed). Biomarker responses in rainbow trout exposed to regular and additionally treated effluents were determined. GAC and ozone treatment removed 87-95% of the total concentrations of APIs de

The gut sac is a long-standing, widely used in vitro preparation for studying solute and water transport, and calculation of these fluxes requires an accurate assessment of volume. This is commonly determined gravimetrically by measuring the change in mass over time. While convenient this likely under-estimates actual net water flux (Jv) due to tissue edema. We evaluated whether the popular in vivo volume marker [(14)C]-PEG 4000, offers a more representative measure of Jvin vitro. We directly compared these two methods in five teleost species (toadfish, flounder, rainbow trout, killifish and t

Lionel S. Beale of London made some of the earliest contributions to Cytopathology in the 1850-1860s. Cytopathology then experienced a 60+ year hiatus during which few advances were made. In 1927, Londoner Leonard S. Dudgeon published his wet film method for rapid intraoperative diagnosis and in 1928 Greek-American George Papanicolaou and Romanian Aurel A. Babeş independently discovered that cervical cancer can be diagnosed using vaginal smears; these were huge advancements. Yet, there was another hiatus where little progress was made which lasted until the publications of Papanicolaou and Tro

Innate pathway activation is fundamental for early anti-viral defense in fish, but currently there is insufficient understanding of how salmonid fish identify viral molecules and activate these pathways. The Toll-like receptor (TLR) is believed to play a crucial role in host defense of pathogenic microbes in the innate immune system. In the present study, the full-length cDNA of Salmo salar TLR3 (ssTLR3) was cloned. The ssTLR3 cDNA sequence was 6071 bp long, containing an open reading frame of 2754 bp and encoding 971 amino acids. The TLR group motifs, such as leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domains

The decline of fisheries over recent decades and a growing human population has coincided with an increase in aquaculture production. As farmed fish densities increase, so have their rates of infectious diseases, as predicted by the theory of density-dependent disease transmission. One of the pathogen that has increased with the growth of salmon farming is sea lice. Effective management of this pathogen requires an understanding of the spatial scale of transmission. We used a two-part multi-scale model to account for the zero-inflated data observed in weekly sea lice abundance levels on rainbo

Diploid parthenogenesis, with rare sex, is considered as the basic mode of reproduction among the hermaphroditic and viviparous Gyrodactylus. A particular strain of the monogenean parasite Gyrodactylus salaris (RBT clone) was recognized by an invariable, unique mitochondrial DNA haplotype in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms. The RBT clone was shown to be triploid and asexual by analyzing a 493 bp sequence of a nuclear DNA marker. Three alleles were present as heterozygous in all 237 individuals sampled in years 2001-2005 from five isolated Finnish farms. The triploid clone probably or

Sea lice infestations have become a major health problem for farmed salmonids throughout the world including Chile. In southern Chile, 6 geographical areas, divided into 22 geographical zones with a total of 127 salmon farming centers and 1519 sea pens, were regularly sampled from December 1999 to April 2002. A linear mixed-effects model (LME) approach was used to describe the infestations of adult forms of sea lice on 3 salmonid species farmed in southern Chile. The variables fish species, water temperature, water salinity, fish weight, juvenile parasite count, pen shape, treatment status in

Myelination, the process by which glial cells ensheath and electrically insulate axons, has been investigated intensely. Nevertheless, knowledge of how myelination is regulated or how myelinating cells communicate with neurons is still incomplete. As a prelude to genetic analyses of these processes, we have identified zebrafish orthologues of genes encoding major myelin proteins and have characterized myelination in the larval zebrafish. Expression of genes corresponding to proteolipid protein (PLP/DM20), myelin protein zero (P0), and myelin basic protein (MBP) is detected at 2 days postfertil

The study of gender-based differences in the pharmacokinetics (PK) of compounds tested in animal models has received greater attention in recent years. As early as 1932, the pharmacological action of barbiturates was recognized as gender dependent-female rats required half the dose needed by male rats to induce sleep. Later, it was shown that gender differences in hepatic metabolism were responsible for this gender-related pharmacodynamic response. Today, it is well known that gender-dependent metabolism in rats often results from differences in expression of hepatic enzymes. The sex-specific

In certain areas of Asia the pattern of trematode infections in both man and animals seems to have changed in the recent past. On Taiwan, for example, paragonimiasis, fasciolopsiasis and schistosomiasis were at one time highly endemic in certain locations, but in recent years these parasitoses have been difficult to find in definitive, intermediate as well as reservoir hosts. Education, industrialization, alterations in the ecology and the use of modern agricultural practices have contributed to the changes. Conversely, it appears that human clonorchiasis is increasing in Taiwan while in Hong

In aquaculture, the use of probiotics in supplemented diets has been shown to be a suitable strategy to increase the immune status of fish and thereby reduce the impact of pathogens. Specifically, the immunostimulatory effects of the probiotic microorganism Bacillus subtilis have been widely confirmed both in vitro and in vivo in many aquacultured species. However, whether feeding fish with probiotic-enriched diets affects the adaptive immune response mounted to a vaccine has been scarcely addressed in fish. Therefore, in this study, we addressed this using rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
