The metabolic rate of a freely moving fish (routine metabolic rate) is tightly coupled with volitional movement (spontaneous activity), both of which commonly show strong daily cycles linked to the species-specific diel activity pattern. Mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), an important estuarine fish in the north western Atlantic Ocean, are historically reported as diurnal (i.e., more active during daylight). Our recent laboratory studies on a Bay of Fundy population, however, showed a free-running (i.e., similarly active daytime and night-time) or even nocturnal (i.e., more active at night-tim

BACKGROUND: High-impact loads have been linked with running injuries. Fatigue has been proposed to increase impact loads, but this relationship has not been rigorously examined, including the associated role of muscle strength, power, and endurance.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of fatigue on impact loading in runners and the role of muscle function in mediating changes in impact loading with fatigue.
METHODS: Twenty-eight trained endurance runners performed a fixed-intensity time to exhaustion test at 85% of V̇O 2max . Tibial accelerations were measured using leg-mount

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia is associated with maxillomandibular hypoplasia, microtia, soft-tissue deficiency, and variable severity of cranial nerve dysfunction, most often of the facial nerve. This study evaluated the incidence of facial paralysis in patients with craniofacial microsomia and outcomes after free functioning muscle transfer for dynamic smile reconstruction.
METHODS: A single-center, retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed from 1985 to 2018 to identify pediatric patients with craniofacial microsomia and severe facial nerve dysfunction who underwent dynamic s

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used aiming to boost exercise performance and inconsistent findings have been reported. One possible explanation is related to the limitations of the so-called "conventional" tDCS, which uses large rectangular electrodes, resulting in a diffuse electric field. A new tDCS technique called high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) has been recently developed. HD-tDCS uses small ring electrodes and produces improved focality and greater magnitude of its aftereffects. This study tested whether HD-tDCS would improve exercise performance to a greater exte

BACKGROUND: Neuroprosthetic devices controlled by persons with standard limb amputation often lack the dexterity of the physiological limb due to limitations of both the user's ability to output accurate control signals and the control system's ability to formulate dynamic trajectories from those signals. To restore full limb functionality to persons with amputation, it is necessary to first deduce and quantify the motor performance of the missing limbs, then meet these performance requirements through direct, volitional control of neuroprosthetic devices.
METHODS: We develop a neuromuscular

OBJECTIVE: We examined the impact of simulated Tokyo 2020 environmental condition on exercise performance, thermoregulatory responses and thermal perception among Dutch elite athletes.
METHODS: 105 elite athletes from different sport disciplines performed two exercise tests in simulated control (15.9 ± 1.2 °C, relative humidity (RH) 55 ± 6%) and Tokyo (31.6 ± 1.0 °C, RH 74 ± 5%) environmental conditions. Exercise tests consisted of a 20-min warm-up (70% HRmax), followed by an incremental phase until volitional exhaustion (5% workload increase every 3 min). Gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi),

RATIONALE: Peripheral nerve injury related to vascular complications associated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is perhaps underappreciated. Compared to the well-described central nervous system complications of ECMO, brachial plexopathy and lumbosacral plexopathy have rarely been reported. We report this case to heighten awareness of lumbosacral plexus injury due to pelvic hematoma formation after ECMO.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old woman developed a large pelvic hematoma with significant mass effect on intrapelvic structures after receiving lifesaving venoarterial ECMO for

The purpose of this study was to examine the subject and combined associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (fitness) and body mass index (BMI) with the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in middle-aged men. This prospective study was based on a population sample of 2,357 men aged 42 to 60 years, who were followed up in the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease cohort study. Fitness was directly measured by peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) during progressive exercise testing to volitional fatigue. Participants were divided into 4 groups (fit-normal weight, unfit-normal weight, fit-overweight/obese, and un

PURPOSE: RPE may be useful for exercise testing and prescription in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), although the roles of differentiated central and peripheral fatigue during exercise are not clear. We aimed to model differentiated RPE responses during graded arm cycling in individuals with SCI and to describe their relationship to cardiorespiratory outcomes.
METHODS: Thirty-six individuals with SCI (13 paraplegia and 23 tetraplegia) completed a maximal graded arm cycling exercise test to volitional exhaustion (5 W·min paraplegia; 10 W·min tetraplegia). Participants were asked to r

UNLABELLED: Insulin resistance is increasingly prevalent in children and may be related to muscle mitochondrial dysfunction, necessitating development of mitochondrial assessment techniques. Recent studies used phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (P-MRS), a noninvasive technique appealing for clinical research. P-MRS requires exercise at a precise percentage of maximum volitional contraction (MVC). MVC measurement in children, particularly in those with a disease, is problematic because of variability in perception of effort and motivation. We therefore developed a method to predict MVC

PURPOSE: Robotics-assisted tilt-table (RTT) technology allows neurological rehabilitation therapy to be started early thus alleviating some secondary complications of prolonged bed rest. This study assessed the feasibility of a novel work-rate-guided RTT approach for cardiopulmonary training and assessment in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI).
METHODS: Three representative subjects with iSCI at three distinct stages of primary rehabilitation completed an incremental exercise test (IET) and a constant load test (CLT) on a RTT augmented with integrated leg-force and position me

Reaching to targets with misaligned visual feedback of the hand leads to changes in proprioceptive estimates of hand position and reach aftereffects. In such tasks, subjects are able to make use of two error signals: the discrepancy between the desired and actual movement, known as the sensorimotor error signal, and the discrepancy between visual and proprioceptive estimates of hand position, which we refer to as the cross-sensory error signal. We have recently shown that mere exposure to a sensory discrepancy in the absence of goal-directed movement (i.e. no sensorimotor error signal) is suff

UNLABELLED: PURPOSEBACKGROUND: Quadriceps function is an important outcome following lower extremity injury and surgery. Measurements of quadriceps function are particularly helpful initially post surgery, however traditional quadriceps strength measures like isokinetic testing are contraindicated during this time period. Inclusion of dynamic musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging in the clinical setting has been beneficial in understanding quadriceps activation specifically rectus femoris (RF) contraction; however, there is a paucity of literature in this area. The purpose of the current study wa

Pompe disease is an inherited neuromuscular disease caused by deficiency of lysosomal acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA) leading to glycogen accumulation in muscle and motoneurons. Cardiopulmonary failure in infancy leads to early mortality, and GAA enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) results in improved survival, reduction of cardiac hypertrophy, and developmental gains. However, many children have progressive ventilatory insufficiency and need additional support. Preclinical work shows that gene transfer restores phrenic neural activity and corrects ventilatory deficits. Here we present 180-day safet

This review summarizes current literature on pulmonary oedema triggered by above-ground exercise in healthy humans from studies that use various imaging techniques to detect oedema. Eleven studies were identified, comprising of 137 subjects (mean age = 28 years). Eighty per cent (n = 110) were males, and 20% (n = 27) were female. The studies were grouped into three different categories according to the severity of the exercise protocol, which were either prolonged, submaximal exercise of 15-min to 2 h in duration at approx. 50-75%VO(2max) and not to exhaustion (PROLONGED, n = 44), a VO(2max) t

Traditional rehabilitation of amputees is primarily aimed at strengthening remaining musculature necessary for prosthetic use and gait training. Available gait training time, however, is often limited by pain, residual limb skin tolerance, and the patient's cardiovascular endurance. Harness-supported treadmill ambulation is a rehabilitation technique being used by physical therapists to decrease an individual's body weight by a given percentage during exercise. This, theoretically, allows an amputee to ambulate on a prosthesis at a lower energy cost. The purpose of this study was to compare th
