Computational Investigation of the High-Temperature Chemistry of Small Hydroxy Ethers: Methoxymethanol, Ethoxymethanol, and 2-Methoxyethanol.

In the search for alternative energy carriers that can replace conventional fossil fuels, sustainably produced oxygenated hydrocarbons represent a promising class of potential candidates. An illustrative member of this class of alternative biofuels are oxymethylene ethers (OMEs). This study makes a contribution to this objective by investigating hydroxy ethers, specifically methoxymethanol, ethoxymethanol, and 2-methoxyethanol. These bifunctional oxygenated molecules are relevant intermediates formed during the combustion of OMEs or via an equilibrium reaction in methanol and formaldehyde mixt

Combined Experimental and Theoretical Studies of the O(3P) + 1-Butene Reaction Dynamics: Primary Products, Branching Fractions, and Role of Intersystem Crossing.

Information on the detailed mechanism and dynamics (primary products, branching fractions (BFs), and channel specific rate constants as a function of temperature) for many important combustion reactions of O(3P) with unsaturated hydrocarbons is still lacking. We report synergistic experimental/theoretical studies on the mechanism and dynamics of the O(3P) + 1-C4H8 (1-butene) reaction by combining crossed molecular beam (CMB) experiments with soft electron ionization mass-spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at 10.5 kcal/mol collision energy (Ec) to high-level ab initio electroni

Energy barriers for the addition of H, *CH3, and *C2H5 to *CH2=CHX [X = H, CH3, OH] and for H-atom addition to RCH=O [R = H, CH3, *C2H5, n-C3H7]: implications for the gas-phase chemistry of enols.

Although enols have been identified in alcohol and other flames and in interstellar space and have been implicated in the formation of carboxylic acids in the urban troposphere in the past few years, the reactions that give rise to them are virtually unknown. To address this data deficit, particularly with regard to biobutanol combustion, we have carried out a number of ab initio calculations with the multilevel methods CBS-QB3 and CBS-APNO to determine the activation enthalpies for methyl addition to the CH(2) group of CH(2)=CHX where X = H, OH, and CH(3). These average at 26.3 +/- 1.0 kJ mol

Primary human bronchial epithelial cell responses to diesel and biodiesel emissions at an air-liquid interface.

INTRODUCTION: Diesel emissions have a high level of particulate matter which can cause inflammation and oxidative stress in the airways. A strategy to reduce diesel particulate matter and the associated adverse effects is the use of biodiesels and fuel additives. However, very little is known about the biological effects of these alternative emissions. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of biodiesel and triacetin/biodiesel emissions on primary human bronchial epithelial cells (pHBECs) compared to diesel emissions. METHODS: pHBECs were exposed to diesel, biodiesel (20%, 50% and 100

Probiotic effect of Pichia pastoris X-33 produced in parboiled rice effluent and YPD medium on broiler chickens.

In a previous paper we showed that the yeast Pichia pastoris X-33 grown in parboiled rice effluent supplemented with glycerol byproduct from the biodiesel industry improved the quality of the effluent. In this paper we show the validation of this yeast (PPE) as probiotic for broilers. Its effect on feed efficiency and immunomodulation was compared with the same yeast grown in yeast peptone dextrose medium (PPY), with Saccharomyces boulardii (SBY) and with the controls fed unsupplemented feed (CON). One-day-old female chicks were vaccinated against infectious bursal disease (IBD) and the titers

Molecular Breeding of Sorghum bicolor, A Novel Energy Crop.

Currently, molecular breeding is regarded as an important tool for the improvement of many crop species. However, in sorghum, recently heralded as an important bioenergy crop, progress in this field has been relatively slow and limited. In this review, we present existing efforts targeted at genetic characterization of sorghum mutants. We also comprehensively review the different attempts made toward the isolation of genes involved in agronomically important traits, including the dissection of some sorghum quantitative trait loci (QTLs). We also explore the current status of the use of transge

Jatropha curcas: from biodiesel generation to medicinal applications.

Jatropha curcas (JC) is a multipurpose perennial plant that belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and is native to arid and semiarid tropical regions worldwide. It has many attributes and considerable potential for renewable energy, fish and livestock feeding. Despite its rich application as a renewable source and for animal feeding, JC has barely been explored for its medicinal potential. Here we review several patents related to JC that show it has been underused for medicinal purposes. For example, only one invention disclosure to date utilizes JC, combined with three other plants, in a prepa

Toxicological properties of emission particles from heavy duty engines powered by conventional and bio-based diesel fuels and compressed natural gas.

BACKGROUND: One of the major areas for increasing the use of renewable energy is in traffic fuels e.g. bio-based fuels in diesel engines especially in commuter traffic. Exhaust emissions from fossil diesel fuelled engines are known to cause adverse effects on human health, but there is very limited information available on how the new renewable fuels may change the harmfulness of the emissions, especially particles (PM). We evaluated the PM emissions from a heavy-duty EURO IV diesel engine powered by three different fuels; the toxicological properties of the emitted PM were investigated. Conve

Modification and analysis of context-specific genome-scale metabolic models: methane-utilizing microbial chassis as a case study.

UNLABELLED: Context-specific genome-scale model (CS-GSM) reconstruction is becoming an efficient strategy for integrating and cross-comparing experimental multi-scale data to explore the relationship between cellular genotypes, facilitating fundamental or applied research discoveries. However, the application of CS modeling for non-conventional microbes is still challenging. Here, we present a graphical user interface that integrates COBRApy, EscherPy, and RIPTiDe, Python-based tools within the BioUML platform, and streamlines the reconstruction and interrogation of the CS genome-scale metabol

Effect of time series on the degradation of lignin by Trametes gibbosa: Products and pathways.

Lignin is the third most abundant organic resource in nature. The utilization of white-rot fungi for wood degradation effectively circumvents environmental pollution associated with chemical treatments, facilitating the benign decomposition of lignin. Trametes gibbosa is a typical white-rot fungus with rapid growth and strong wood decomposition ability. The lignin content decreased from 23.62 mg/mL to 17.05 mg/mL, which decreased by 27 % in 30 days. The activity of manganese peroxidase increased steadily by 9.44 times. The activities of laccase and lignin peroxidase had the same trend of chang

Comparison of synthetic and post-synthetic molecular genetic methods of reducing xylan glucuronidation in hybrid aspen for biorefinery applications.

BACKGROUND: The pattern of xylan backbone substitution by 4-O-methylglucuronic acid (mGlcA) and O-acetyl groups generated during biosynthesis in the Golgi apparatus plays a key role in molecular interactions between secondary cell wall polymers in hardwoods, thus regulating biorefinery properties of woody biomass. This study aims at comparing the effects of two different approaches to reduce xylan glucuronidation, targeting either xylan biosynthesis by RNAi suppression of GLUCURONIC SUBSTITUTION OF XYLAN1 genes (denoted Gux1RNAi) or by xylan post-synthetic modification in the secondary cell wa

Metabolic engineering strategies for sustainable de novo isobutylamine production by Corynebacterium glutamicum.

BACKGROUND: Short-chain primary amines are a versatile group of molecules in biological systems, derived from the decarboxylation of amino acids or the transamination of carbonyl-containing molecules. Isobutylamine, the decarboxylation product of L-valine, has applications in chemical synthesis of pharmaceuticals, herbicides, fungicides and specialized chemicals, where it is especially interesting as a substitute for petrochemical compounds. Since the chemical synthesis of short-chain primary amines is hazardous and environmentally unsustainable, we established an efficient biosynthetic approa

Improving inhibitor tolerance of xylitol-producing Saccharomyces cerevisiae by overexpressing key target genes mined through comparative transcriptomes.

BACKGROUND: Xylitol, a valuable five-carbon sugar alcohol widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, can be biosynthesized through the reduction of xylose by engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A major challenge in producing xylitol from lignocellulosic feedstocks is the sensitivity of yeast to multiple inhibitors generated during biomass pretreatment. Developing robust microbial cell factories with enhanced tolerance to these inhibitors is therefore essential for efficient and sustainable xylitol production. In this study, we employed comparative transcriptomic analysis to invest

Innovative mycosynthesis of chitosan nanoparticles via bionanofactory Penicillium crustosum: optimization, characterization, and application against building-deteriorating fungus, Trichosporon asahii.

Biocorrosion of building materials is a global challenge that threatens both modern buildings and cultural heritage. This degradation is largely driven by interactions between microbes, particularly fungi, and various gaseous effluents containing nitrogenous, sulfurous, and carbonaceous aerosols from anthropogenic activities, leading to progressive biocorrosion of construction surfaces. Therefore, this study aims to reduce such detrimental effects using chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs). An eco-friendly biosynthesis approach was employed, using the cell-free supernatant of Penicillium sp. strain H

Prospective life-cycle assessment of CORSIA sustainable aviation fuels under evolving electricity and hydrogen carbon intensities.

Most life-cycle assessments (LCAs) of alternative fuels evaluate electricity and hydrogen inputs using static or scenario-based carbon intensity assumptions. This study quantifies the impact of electricity and hydrogen on the life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). By coupling emission intensity projections for electricity grids and hydrogen production with Argonne National Laboratory's R&D GREET model, and following the life-cycle assessment (LCA) method of the International Civil Aviation Organization, we estimate life-cycle GHG emissions effects for t

Rational structural design for the dual enhancement of catalytic activity and thermal stability of hyaluronidase from Citrobacter portucalensis.

Hyaluronidases (HAase) offer a practical route to produce valued low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA) and HA oligosaccharides (o-HA), which are valued across medical, cosmetic, and biomaterials applications due to their enhanced bioactivity and tissue penetration. However, reliable production and scale-up of LMW‑HA and o‑HA remain complicated due to inefficient production method, potential pathogenic hosts, enzymes with limited catalytic proficiency and prone to thermal denaturation. Here, we employed a structure-guided multi-strategy engineering approach to express and optimize a PL8

Biotechnological applications of D-xylose-fermenting autochthonous yeasts in lignocellulosic biorefineries.

The efficient fermentation of D-xylose by yeasts remains a major bottleneck for the sustainable production of second-generation bioethanol, as this pentose represents a substantial fraction of hemicellulosic sugars in lignocellulosic biomass. While conventional industrial yeasts show limited native capacity for D-xylose utilization, numerous autochthonous (native or wild-derived) yeasts isolated from natural environments harbor metabolic traits that have been naturally selected and enable effective pentose assimilation under challenging conditions. Understanding and harnessing this diversity i
