Prevalence of syphilis and HIV infection during pregnancy in incarcerated women and the incidence of congenital syphilis in births in prison in Brazil.

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of syphilis and HIV infection during pregnancy, the mother to child transmission of syphilis and the incidence of congenital syphilis in incarcerated women in Brazil; to compare these rates to those observed in pregnant women outside of jail; and to verify the maternal factors associated with syphilis infection during pregnancy in free and incarcerated women. We used data from two nationwide studies conducted during the period 2011-2014. The Birth in Brazil study included 23,894 free women cared for in 266 hospitals. The Maternal and Infant Health in

Burden and Determinants of Smoking among Prisoners with Respiratory Tract Infection: A Cross-Sectional Study of Nine Major Prison Setups in Northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity, mortality and a wide range of associated risk factors are disproportionately clustered among prisoners compared to the general population. Smoking is one of the risk factors for the increased burden of unfavorable health outcomes particularly among prisoners. However, little is known about the level and determinants of smoking among the incarcerated population in Ethiopia. METHODS: We collected data from 738 prisoners in nine major prison setups in Tigray region by nurses and clinical officers. Data were entered in to Epi Data 3.1 and exported to stata 13.0 for cleaning

Sociodemographic characteristics and aggression quotient among children in conflict with the law in India: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of juvenile delinquency has increased in the past decade in India and juvenile crimes are increasingly being reported. This has been attributed to many biopsychosocial factors. It is essential to understand these issues in the context of India to determine the response of acts of children in conflict with the law. We aimed to assess the sociodemographic characteristics and the aggression quotient of children in conflict with the law (juvenile delinquents) in observation homes across India and compare them with those who were not. METHODS: We did a case-control study

Posttraumatic stress disorder in incarcerated women: A call for evidence-based treatment.

The majority of women who enter the criminal justice system, most of whom are poor and women of color, have suffered from significant lifetime trauma exposure that can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is essential to identify the prevalence of PTSD among this population in order to identify treatment needs. Most studies on PTSD among incarcerated women have focused on PTSD in jailed populations, including women awaiting trial. Using a cross-sectional study design, we estimated the prevalence of PTSD and comorbid physical and mental health conditions in 387 incarcerated women se

An examination of the path between recent sexual violence and sexually transmitted infections.

PURPOSE: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are among the most common infections in the United States and are particularly prevalent in survivors of sexual violence. The purpose of this study is to examine co-occurring risk factors for sexual violence and STIs including mental health, alcohol use, drug use, and multiple partners as intersecting pathways to STIs for women who experienced sexual abuse in the past year. METHODS: Secondary analyses were conducted on cross-sectional data from women originally recruited as respondents for an epidemiologic survey funded by the Centers for Diseas

Evaluation of pityriasis versicolor in prisoners: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a mild but recurrent superficial fungal infection of stratum corneum. Many predisposing factors such as late teen and young adulthood age, tropical and subtropical climate (and to a lesser extent temperate climate), immunosuppression, malnutrition, use of oral contraceptives, hyperhidrosis, poor hygiene and a few other factors have been proposed for this condition. AIM: Regarding these probable and possible risk factors, we felt that jail is a unique population which can be affected by this infection and therefore we decided to evaluate some aspects o

Levels of trauma among women inmates with HIV risk and alcohol use disorders: behavioral and emotional impacts.

An increasing number of women are involved in the criminal justice system. Women in corrections are often of low socioeconomic status, medically underserved and exposed to a variety of traumatic events. Programs and services provided in correctional settings should be informed by the unique profiles and needs of these women. This study sought to identify distinct sub-groups (classes) of incarcerated women based on differences in their qualitative (types of trauma) and quantitative (number of) trauma experiences. Demographics, psychosocial and behavioral characteristics were measured in 149 wom

Effectiveness of a mental health court in reducing criminal recidivism and violence.

OBJECTIVE: In response to the large-scale involvement of people with mental disorders in the criminal justice system, many communities have created specialized mental health courts in recent years. However, little research has been done to evaluate the criminal justice outcomes of such courts. This study evaluated whether a mental health court can reduce the risk of recidivism and violence by people with mental disorders who have been arrested. METHOD: A retrospective observational design was used to compare the occurrence of new criminal charges for 170 people who entered a mental health cou

Risk factors for hepatitis C on the Texas-Mexico border.

OBJECTIVES: Our clinical experience suggested that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in this Texas-Mexico border area might have features, especially risk factors, that differ from some other areas of the United States. Therefore, we conducted a prospective analysis to investigate the epidemiology, risk factors, and certain other characteristics of HCV infection in the El Paso region. METHODS: During a 2-yr period, individuals with a positive HCV serology were considered as "patients" and those with a negative hepatitis serology panel were "controls." A questionnaire survey was conducted in p

Oral ivermectin for the treatment and prophylaxis of scabies in prison.

INTRODUCTION: Oral ivermectin has been widely used to treat various human diseases, such as filariasis, myiasis, larva migrans, strongyloidiasis and scabies (both the common and crusted forms). However, there are only a small number of papers on the effects of this drug for the control of scabies in infested environments. The current study shows the results obtained with the collective treatment of inmates of a public jail. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 123 inmates living in a restricted and contaminated environment were evaluated clinically by experienced dermatologists for the assessmen

Case-finding of pulmonary tuberculosis on admission to a penitentiary centre.

SETTING: The prison population is considered to be at high risk of tuberculosis infection and illness. Therefore, a tuberculosis prevention and control program was put into effect upon the opening of a penitentiary center in Barcelona whose inmates suffered a high prevalence of intravenous drug use (IVDU) (48.4%) and HIV-1 infection (36.0%). OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the prevalence of tuberculosis infection and pulmonary tuberculosis detected on admission to jail among those prisoners who had no history of tuberculosis; and to study as predictors of tuberculosis infection and illness the variab

Correlates of heavy drinking and alcohol related problems among men and women in drug treatment programs.

A series of analyses were conducted to explore if there were significant differences in heavy drinking and alcohol-related problems in clients admitted to different types of drug treatment programs and whether such differences, if found, could be attributed to variation in social characteristics, drug use behavior, drinking norms, drinking contexts, or in reasons for combining alcohol and drug use. Men and women (N = 246) in four types of publicly funded treatment programs were interviewed at intake regarding drinking and drug use patterns and related problems. The results of the study showed

All-cause and cause-specific mortality during and following incarceration in Brazil: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Mortality during and after incarceration is poorly understood in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The need to address this knowledge gap is especially urgent in South America, which has the fastest growing prison population in the world. In Brazil, insufficient data have precluded our understanding of all-cause and cause-specific mortality during and after incarceration. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We linked incarceration and mortality databases for the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul to obtain a retrospective cohort of 114,751 individuals with recent incarceration. Detainees' Perceptions of Procedural Justice: An Examination Throughout the Criminal Justice System.

Procedural justice literature proposes that when individuals perceive their treatment by criminal justice authorities as more procedurally just, they will be more likely to view those authorities as legitimate and, in turn, show more compliant behavior. Knowledge on potential determinants of procedural justice is, therefore, crucial. Research suggests that prior perceptions of procedural justice may influence later judgements of procedural justice. The current study used data from the Prison Project, including information on detainees' perceptions of their treatment by the police, the judge, t
