Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and aggressive behavior among incarcerated methamphetamine users.

OBJECTIVE: Methamphetamine use remains a prevalent problem in the United States and is linked to numerous deleterious outcomes, including aggressive behavior, criminal activity, and incarceration. Given these associations, a greater understanding of factors that contribute to aggression among users of methamphetamine is needed, particularly within criminal justice settings, where users of this drug are overrepresented. METHODS: The present study examined the relationships between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and emotion dysregulation and in-prison physical aggression among in

Prevalence of antisocial personality disorder among Chinese individuals receiving treatment for heroin dependence: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Studies from Western countries consistently report very high rates of comorbid Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) among individuals with heroin addiction, but the reported proportion of Chinese individuals with heroin addiction who have co-morbid ASPD varies widely, possibly because Chinese clinicians do not consider personality issues when treating substance abuse problems. AIM: Conduct a meta-analysis of studies that assessed the proportion of Chinese individuals with heroin dependence who have comorbid ASPD. METHODS: We searched for relevant studies in both Chinese databas

A prospective follow-up study of alcoholic violent offenders and fire setters.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated biochemical and family variables and predictors of recidivism among forensic psychiatric patients who had committed violent offenses or set fires. METHODS: One hundred fourteen male alcoholic violent offenders and fire setters were followed up for an average of 4.5 years after release from prison. At the beginning of their incarceration, the first half of the offenders were administered clinical diagnostic interviews, whereas the latter half received the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III (SCID) that was blind rated. A structured family history quest

Exploring compassionate care in rehabilitation among individuals who are involved with the criminal-legal system with traumatic brain injury: A scoping review.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is disproportionately prevalent among individuals who are involved with the criminal-legal system and can impact one's ability to critically think and emotionally regulate, thereby increasing risk of aggressive behaviour and recidivism. Considering and providing compassionate care can improve healthcare experiences and outcomes for this population. This scoping review aimed to answer the question: "To what extent is compassionate care considered or provided in rehabilitation for individuals who are involved with the criminal-legal system with TBI?" A systematic sea

Interventions to reduce relapse risk and drug craving in patients with substance use disorders in forensic psychiatric care: a systematic review of controlled trials.

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: Substance use is a risk factor for relapse in violent crime. In forensic psychiatric care (FPC), severe mental disorder and comorbid substance use is common, with a majority having a history of substance use disorder (SUD) and many having committed their index crime while under influence. FPC is dedicated to treating these patients to reduce the risk of criminal recidivism. Though interventions for SUD are used, none of them have been developed to meet the needs of the FPC patient group specifically. AIM: To identify and evaluate controlled interventions that p

Predictive Values of Serum IL-33 and sST2 in Endotypes and Postoperative Recurrence of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a common inflammatory disease with high heterogeneity and postoperative recidivation. The IL-33/ST2 axis is known to be involved in Th2 immune responses. This study is aimed at exploring levels of serum IL-33 and soluble ST2 (sST2) in CRSwNP patients and their potential for predicting CRSwNP endotypes and postoperative recurrence. METHODS: The present study recruited 149 CRSwNP patients, 80 of whom were noneosinophilic (neCRSwNP) and 69 eosinophilic (eCRSwNP), as well as 60 healthy controls (HCs). Serum samples were collected fr

[Should hospitalization be required after the emergency discharge of patients with borderline personality disorder who have attempted suicide (FRENCH CRISIS cohort)?].

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a pervasive pattern of instability and impulsivity. There is a high prevalence of BPD patients among those admitted to the emergency department for suicide attempts. However, little empirical research exists to assist clinicians in deciding whether to hospitalize a suicidal patient. Some authors have argued that hospitalization does not prevent suicide and could actually harm these patients, thereby leading to psychosocial regression. Parasuicidal behaviors could be reinforced by the attention given during hospitalization.

Forensic-Psychiatric Risk Evaluations: Perspectives of Forensic Psychiatric Experts and Older Incarcerated Persons From Switzerland.

Background: Forensic-psychiatric risk assessments of persons in prisons aim to provide treatment for their mental health disorders to prevent risk of recidivism. Based on the outcomes of such evaluations, it is decided, for instance, whether the person can be released or be assigned to further treatment with or without privileges. A negative evaluation would mean that the assessed person must remain in prison or in a forensic institution until his or her mental health has improved to live safely in the community. This paper highlights the process of forensic-psychiatric evaluations and the cha

Probation clients' barriers to access and use of opioid use disorder medications.

BACKGROUND: There is a gap between evidence-based treatment with medications for opioid use disorders (OUDs) and current practices of probation departments who supervise individuals with OUDs. Many probationers with OUDs cannot access FDA-approved medications to treat their disorders despite the strong evidence of their effectiveness. The barriers to medications for those under probation supervision include practitioners' negative attitudes toward medications, costs, stigma, and diversion risk. Probation officers have an ethical obligation to help their clients reduce barriers to access the ca

Development of a text message intervention aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm in patients admitted to hospital as a result of injury.

BACKGROUND: Screening for alcohol misuse and brief interventions (BIs) for harm in trauma care settings are known to reduce alcohol intake and injury recidivism, but are rarely implemented. We created the content for a mobile phone text message BI service to reduce harmful drinking among patients admitted to hospital following an injury who screen positive for hazardous alcohol use. The aim of this study was to pre-test and refine the text message content using a robust contextualisation process ahead of its formal evaluation in a randomised controlled trial. METHODS: Pre-testing was conducte

The importance of granulocyte elastase in haematological diagnosis.

PMN elastase is a useful additional parameter in the differential diagnosis of the leukaemias. In all patients with myelocytic leukaemias there were elevated levels of elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor (E-alpha 1PI), while in the lymphatic leukaemias complexed elastase levels were decreased. The highest values were found in the peripheral blood plasma and bone marrow plasma of patients with CML. Despite high E-alpha 1PI concentrations there were no signs of bleeding or consumption of plasmatic coagulation factors. In AML a wide range of E-alpha 1PI levels was observed, extending from sligh

Navigating barriers and embracing facilitators of connection: insights from peer recovery specialists working with individuals with substance use disorder and criminal justice involvement: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder affects over half of incarcerated individuals, with 23% experiencing opioid use disorder specifically. Addressing opioid use disorder in jails is crucial due to its association with increased recidivism and overdose. This study investigates the experiences of peer recovery specialists working with individuals with opioid use disorder and criminal justice involvement, focusing on barriers and facilitators to client connections. Qualitative interviews were conducted and thematically analyzed using a hybrid inductive and deductive coding approach. The sample inv

The role of social relationships in recovery court programs.

BACKGROUND: Recovery courts offer an empirically supported alternative to incarceration for legally involved individuals struggling with addiction. While studies suggest that graduation from recovery courts leads to a lower likelihood of recidivism as compared to incarceration, attrition rates among recovery court participants are high. Relatively little is known about how court participants' social and family interactions affect progression through recovery court programs - information that could facilitate development of interventions to decrease court program attrition.
