NOMA: A Preventable "Scourge" of African Children.

Noma is a serious orofacial gangrene originating intraorally in the gingival-oral mucosa complex before spreading extraorally to produce a visibly destructive ulcer. Although cases of noma are now rarely reported in the developed countries, it is still prevalent among children in third world countries, notably in sub-Sahara Africa, where poverty, ignorance, malnutrition, and preventable childhood infections are still common. This review summarizes historical, epidemiological, management, and research updates on noma with suggestions for its prevention and ultimate global eradication. The globa

Tetanus infection in an 11-year-old male with full infant vaccination history: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Tetanus is a potentially life-threatening neurologic disorder caused by the toxin-producing bacterium Clostridium tetani. Primary prevention is achieved through vaccination, typically administered during infancy, however, breakthrough cases of tetanus in fully immunized individuals, especially in pediatric populations have been noted posing unique challenges for diagnosis and management. Uganda currently does not provide tetanus booster doses beyond infancy. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends 3 dose Tetanus Toxoid (TT) booster doses at ages 12–23 months, 4–7 years and 9

Mandibular Condyle Osteomyelitis Following Third Molar Extraction: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Osteomyelitis of the mandibular condyle is an exceptionally rare but clinically significant infection, usually due to odontogenic sources. We report a case of a 33-year-old healthy male patient who developed condylar osteomyelitis after the extraction of an impacted lower right third molar (tooth 48). Seven days after the extraction, the patient reported increasing pain and trismus, and an initial trial of a muscle relaxant provided no clinical benefit. Maxillofacial CT scan revealed a 6 cm abscess along the medial aspect of the right mandibular ramus. Dual oral antibiotics (amoxicillin/clavul

Is fractionated robotic stereotactic body radiosurgery optional salvage treatment for the re-irradiation of locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma?

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

PURPOSE: Recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after previous radiation therapy is a significant problem. This study was to determine the potential benefits from re-irradiation by fractionated stereotactic body radiotherapy (FSRT) on survival benefits and effects of severe late toxicities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2009 and 2018, treatment outcomes were evaluated retrospectively in 26 patients with locally recurrent NPC treated using FSRT with CyberKnife. Five patients who had metastatic disease and one who had second recurrence were excluded from the study, and the remaining 20 patie

Peritonsillar abscess caused by Prevotella bivia during home quarantine for coronavirus disease 2019: Case report.

RATIONALE: Since late 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) had rapidly spread worldwide, resulting in a pandemic. Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have difficulty in visiting clinics in person during pandemic because they might be encouraged to quarantine at home with supportive care. Peritonsillar abscess rarely coexists with COVID-19; however, patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection could get co-infections or become superinfected with other microorganisms which could cause peritonsillar abscess. We herein describe a case of peritonsillar abscess caus

Tetanus outbreak in a sheep flock due to ear tagging.

Tetanus is an acute, often fatal, infectious neuromuscular disease in all farmed mammals caused by Clostridium tetani. The disease is sporadic but outbreaks of tetanus have been described, as a result of wound contaminated with spores of C. tetani, which sporulates to the vegetative form and produce toxins. The present study reports an outbreak of tetanus in a sheep flock, shortly after ear tagging. Three sheep from a large flock (with a population of 1000 sheep) were presented with signs of: convulsion, limb stiffness, incoordination and trismus ("lock jaw"). There were wounds and scabs in mo

A rare case of extremely high counts of circulating tumor cells detected in a patient with an oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Despite aggressive regimens, the clinical outcome of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma remains poor. The detection of circulating tumor cells could potentially improve the management of patients with disseminated cancer, including diagnosis, treatment strategies, and surveillance. Currently, CellSearch(®) is the most widely used and the only Food and Drug Administration-cleared system for circulating tumor cells detection in patients with metastatic breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer. In most cases of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, only low counts of circulating tum
