Long-term indwelling urinary catheters may become blocked in some patients by formation of encrustations made up of aggregated struvite crystals while other patients rarely develop blocked catheters. We have designated these groups as "blockers", "intermediates" or "non-blockers". To further understand this phenomenon we followed 32 catheterized elderly women in a nursing home. Catheters were changed six times at 2 week intervals. Patients tended to remain as "blockers", "intermediates" or "non-blockers" consistently over time. There were no significant differences in use of antibiotics, clini

The widespread application of chemical displacement technology in oil fields has led to the enrichment of oilfield chemicals in soil. The effects of residual oilfield chemicals on soil enzyme activity and microbial growth characteristics are still unclear. In this work, polyacrylamide (PAM) and nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NP-40), which are commonly used in oil production, are taken as the research objects, and the effects of their concentration changes on soil enzyme activity and microbial growth characteristics are investigated. As the concentration of PAM and NP-40 increases, some ind

Gastric cancer is an aggressive and multifactorial disease. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is identified as a significant etiological factor in gastric cancer. Although only a fraction of patients infected with H. pylori progresses to gastric cancer, bacterial infection is critical in the pathology and development of this malignancy. The pathogenic mechanisms of this bacterium involve the disruption of the gastric epithelial barrier and the induction of chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, angiogenesis and metastasis. Adherence molecules, virulence (CagA and VacA) and colonization (urease)

Manganese dioxide (MnO2), as a catalyst in composting processes, can accumulate in soil over multiple fertilizations. However, its impact on crop growth remains to be explored. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the impacts of MnO2 on the tomato plant performance across various growth stages. Results showed that MnO2 reduced the plant height, leaf number and length by 35.53 %, 27.61 %, and 37.00 %, respectively, and decreased the fruit weight (23.16 %) and sugar-acid ratio (29.7 %) of fruits compared to the MnO2-free control. The adverse impacts of MnO2 on plant growt

INTRODUCTION: The bacterium Corynebacterium urealyticum produces urease and can cause encrusted pyelitis, a condition characterized by calcifications of the renal pelvis and ureteral wall, which may obstruct the urinary tract. We describe a case of encrusted pyelitis caused by C. urealyticum in a kidney transplant patient presenting with altered consciousness due to hyperammonemia.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old woman with a history of cadaveric kidney transplantation, thirty years prior, presented with acute altered consciousness during hospitalization. Laboratory findings showed acute re

Helicobacter pylori is well established as a causative agent for gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. Armed with various inimitable virulence factors, this Gram-negative bacterium is one of few microorganisms that is capable of circumventing the harsh environment of the stomach. The unique spiral structure, flagella, and outer membrane proteins accelerate H. pylori movement within the viscous gastric mucosal layers while facilitating its attachment to the epithelial cells. Furthermore, secretion of urease from H. pylori eases the acidic pH within the stomach, thus creating a niche for

OBJECTIVES: The study was aimed to compare the diagnostic techniques, for the detection of Helicobacter pylori infection, available in low-income countries, where molecular testing is not available or inaccessible to anyone.
RESULTS: Of total enrolled patient, with the mean age of 41.4 ± 13.33 years, 24 (14 female; 10 male) were diagnosed to have been infected. The diagnosis was established based upon the gold standard test [either two of three tests: Rapid Urease Test (RUT), culture and histological examinations]. Of clinical presentation, the epigastric pain (75%) was the commonest; neverth

One of the major therapeutic approaches to preventing relapse and accelerating the healing of duodenal and gastric ulcers is the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance among clinical strains of H. pylori, alternative approaches using newly discovered antimicrobial agents in combination with the standard regimens for the treatment of H. pylori are increasingly needed. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of newly synthesized 8-nitroflouroqunolone derivatives when used either alone or when combined with metronidazole against me

Oral vaccination, is notoriously weak or nonimmunogenic. One of the major reasons is the inefficient antigen uptake caused by enzymolysis and hydrolysis in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, acid-resistant HP55/PLGA nanoparticle was developed as an oral delivery system to protect H. pylori recombinant antigen CCF against the complex gastrointestinal environment. These ∼200nm particles controlled the release of antigen in the acidic environment (pH⩽5.5). Immunized mice with HP55/PLGA-CCF nanoparticles induced high levels of urease-specific antibodies and memory T cell responses. A month

Dermatophyte infections are very common worldwide and their epidemiological characteristics vary according to the geographical region and have altered in the last decades. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the diversity of causative agents of dermatophytoses and describe the epidemiological condition of infection in Isfahan, Iran, between 2003 and 2012. Specimens were collected from hair, nail, and skin and were examined by conventional methods such as direct microscopy, culture on sabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol and cycloheximide (Mycosel agar) and sabouraud g

INTRODUCTION: the role of Helicobacter pylori (HP) in the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) stays disputable.
AIM: to determine clinical-epidemic correlations between reflux-esophagitis (RE) and HP in children and adolescents.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 300 children and adolescents 12-18 years old with RE were examined. HP was diagnosed by histological (Giemza stain with the evaluation of dissemination grade) and rapid urease test. Subjective symptoms (heartburn, abdominal pain, other dyspeptic and astenovegetative complaints) and possible predisposing factors (frequent stres

Corynebacterium urealyticum is a lipid-requiring, urealytic bacterium of the human skin flora that has been recognized as causative agent of urinary tract infections. We report the analysis of the complete genome sequence of C. urealyticum DSM7109, which was initially recovered from a patient with alkaline-encrusted cystitis. The genome sequence was determined by a combination of pyrosequencing and Sanger technology. The chromosome of C. urealyticum DSM7109 has a size of 2,369,219bp and contains 2024 predicted coding sequences, of which 78% were considered as orthologous with genes in the Cory

The complete amino acid sequence of the hydantoinase from Arthrobacter aurescens DSM 3745 has been derived by automated Edman degradation. This is the first ever reported amino acid sequence of a non-ATP-dependent hydantoinase, which hydrolyzes 5'-monosubstituted hydantoin derivatives L-selectively. A homology search performed in protein and nucleic acid databases retrieved only distantly related proteins. All of these are members of the recently described protein superfamily of amidohydrolases related to ureases (Holm and Sander, Proteins 28: 72-82, 1997). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that

H. pylori infection is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. Although the infection may be detected in over half the world's population, only a proportion will develop either ulcer disease or gastric cancer. The prevalence of the infection is very high in both diseases, but other factors combined with chronic infection must lead to specific clinical manifestations of the disease. Long-standing infection results in chronic active gastritis. In a certain subset of the H. pylori-infected population, factors such as dietary, environmental, and/or genet

The investigations on the presence of Helicobacter pylori in gastric mucosa biopsy specimens have evidenced another morphologically distinct spiral bacterium, Helicobacter heilmanii, which is associated with histopathological lesions of antral gastritis. The authors found 18 cases of such infection in a number of 1508 children with dyspeptic manifestations examined endoscopically. While H. pylori-associated infection was detected in 48.7% of the cases, H. heilmanii-associated gastritis had a much lower prevalence, 1.1%. The diagnosis was made by microscopic examination of the gram fuchsin-stai

A prospective case-controlled study was performed to evaluate the gastrointestinal symptoms and mucosal abnormalities occurring in patients with osteofluorosis. Ten patients with documented osteofluorosis and ten age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were included in the study. Clinical evaluation, real-time ultrasound, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsy from the gastric antrum and duodenum were performed in all subjects. The biopsies were subjected to a rapid urease test and light and electron microscopic examinations. Ionic fluoride levels were estimated in the drinking water,

H. pylori organisms are microaerophilic gram-negative curved or spiral bacteria that live in the mucus layer of the gastric epithelium. Since the discovery of H. pylori similar organisms have been found in humans (H. cinaedi, H. fennelliae, H. heilmanii) and animals. H. pylori causes chronic active gastritis and is an important factor in the development of peptic ulceration and gastric cancer. Narrow host range, tissue specificity and chronic inflammation are characteristic features. Putative virulence factors of H. pylori are structural components (flagella, adhesins...) extracellular bacteri

To evaluate the sensitivity of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using nested primers in detecting Helicobacter pylori, gastric tissue biopsy specimens were collected on endoscopy from 17 patients with a duodenal ulcer. DNA was extracted by phenol/chloroform treatment or boiling in water, and then subjected to a nested PCR using two primer pairs from the urease gene of Helicobacter pylori. Fourteen of the 17 patients were positive for Helicobacter pylori using DNA samples extracted by either method. The PCR results correlated well with the results of an enzyme immunoassay to detect IgG a

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is now accepted as an important cause of chronic active gastritis. There also seems to be an association between the colonization of H. pylori in the gastric mucosa and peptic ulceration. However, it has not demonstrated that the instillation of H. pylori into the stomach produces the ulcerative gastric lesions in animals or humans. We carried out an experiment to study whether or not H. pylori has an ulcerogenic action in the ischemic stomach of rats, using an ex vivo gastric chamber. The rat stomachs were exposed to 1 ml of H. pylori solution (200 IU of urease
