Transurethral electrical bladder stimulation: initial results.

Transurethral electrical bladder stimulation to rehabilitate the neurogenic bladder initially proposed by Katona has been promoted in the United States by Kaplan and Richards since the mid 1980s. Encouraged by their results, 2 1/2 years ago we instituted a program patterned on their experience. Since January 1989 we performed transurethral electrical bladder stimulation in 21 patients ranging in age from 4 months to 26 years. The cause of the neurogenic bladder was myelomeningocele in 16 patients, lipomeningocele in 4 and an incomplete spinal cord injury in 1. The stimulation was performed usi

Magnetic resonance imaging findings in corticobasal degeneration.

Two women (patient 1, 77 years old, and patient 2, 63 years old) with strong clinical evidence for corticobasal degeneration (CBD) are presented. Patient 2 was in an early stage of the disease with only a mild disability of her left hand. In addition to the clinical characteristics, both patients presented the typical cortical reflex myoclonus. Magnetic resonance imaging studies for both patients revealed nearly identical hyperintense lesions somatotopic from the left-hand primary motor cortex (M1), extending to the midline and possibly supplementary motor area (SMA) in patient 2. To our knowl

Detection of third and sixth cranial nerve palsies with a novel method for eye tracking while watching a short film clip.

OBJECT: Automated eye movement tracking may provide clues to nervous system function at many levels. Spatial calibration of the eye tracking device requires the subject to have relatively intact ocular motility that implies function of cranial nerves (CNs) III (oculomotor), IV (trochlear), and VI (abducent) and their associated nuclei, along with the multiple regions of the brain imparting cognition and volition. The authors have developed a technique for eye tracking that uses temporal rather than spatial calibration, enabling detection of impaired ability to move the pupil relative to normal

Development and validation of a scale on the difficulties of AI technology integration in teaching for primary and secondary school teachers.

The lack of a comprehensive, theoretically grounded measurement instrument has constrained the systematic diagnosis of multidimensional barriers faced by K-12 teachers in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into instruction. To address this gap, this study developed and validated a multidimensional scale based on the Cognitive-Emotional-Volitional-Behavioral (CEVB) heuristic framework. Through semi-structured interviews, expert consultation, and pilot testing, an initial 20-item pool was formed and administered to 546 teachers from central and western Anhui Province, China. Psychometric e

After-effects of slow-paced breathing on the Bereitschaftspotential preceding voluntary movement.

The concurrent effects of volitional breathing on motor-related brain regions have been documented in several studies, but it remains uncertain whether its after-effects influence neural processes involved in motor preparation. This study investigated whether a brief slow-paced breathing intervention alters the dynamics of the Bereitschaftspotential (BP) preceding voluntary movement. Thirty healthy participants were randomly assigned to a slow-paced breathing (SB) group (n = 15), who performed 5 min of 0.1-Hz breathing, or to a resting breathing (RB) group (n = 15). Before and after the interv

Short-term neurovascular and electrophysiological responses to combined visual and vibration stimulation in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is associated with age-related alterations in neural oscillatory activity and cerebral hemodynamics, while mobility limitations often restrict participation in conventional exercise-based interventions. This study investigated exploratory, single-arm, within-subject short-term neurovascular and electrophysiological responses to a combined visual and vibration stimulation protocol in older adults with MCI. Cerebral blood flow was assessed using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in 27 participants, and electroencephalography (EEG) was additionally recorded in a su

Suboptimal Neural Drive for Muscle Output During Exertional Hyperthermia: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) Study.

PURPOSE: Exertional hyperthermia impairs endurance performance. Although the central nervous system mediates premature fatigue, limited understanding of when and how neural perturbations arise during exertional hyperthermia hinders efforts to develop effective strategies to mitigate its impacts. METHODS: Fifteen physically active males completed a familiarization trial and three randomized crossover controlled trials involving treadmill walking at 54 ± 4% maximal oxygen consumption (mean ± SD) in a temperate environment (COOL; dry bulb temperature [Tdb]: 22.3 ± 0.4°C, relative humidity [RH]:

Acute blood pressure responses to plank and wall sit isometric exercise in adults.

OBJECTIVES: Isometric exercise is an accessible, time efficient intervention for reducing blood pressure (BP). However, guideline recommendations for its use remain sparse due to safety concerns. This study aimed to determine the proportion of participants whose BP exceeded predefined limits during isometric exercise. Secondary aims were to examine differences in BP responses between sexes and across exercises. METHODS: Participants attended the laboratory for two sessions: screening and familiarisation, and exercise testing. In session two, participants performed the plank and wall sit in a

Activin receptor type IIA/IIB blockade increases muscle mass and strength, but compromises glycemic control in mice.

PURPOSE: Blocking the Activin receptor type IIA and IIB (ActRIIA/IIB) has clinical potential to increase muscle mass and improve glycemic control in obesity, cancer, and aging. However, the impact of blocking ActRIIA/IIB on strength, metabolic regulation, and insulin action remains unclear. METHODS: Here, we investigated the effect of short- (10 mg kg-1 bw, once, 40h) or long-term (10 mg kg-1 bw, twice weekly, 21 days) antibody treatment targeting ActRIIA/IIB (αActRIIA/IIB) in lean and diet-induced obese mice and engineered human muscle tissue. RESULTS: Short-term α ActRIIA/IIB administratio

Process evaluation of prevention in long-term care facilities - resident and therapist perspectives on the benefits and acceptance of preventive speech and swallowing sessions.

BACKGROUND: Current demographic trends make the prevention and delay of diseases and their consequences particularly relevant for older adults. A German intervention study developed a programme to prevent swallowing difficulties and language decline among individuals residing in long-term care facilities. As part of the process evaluation, this study assessed residents' satisfaction with this programme and the extent to which therapists considered the exercises feasible and beneficial for the target group. METHODS: A mixed-method process evaluation was conducted. Participating residents compl

Changes in thoracic erector spinae regional activation during postural adjustments and functional reaching tasks after spinal cord injury.

Many individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) exhibit reduced volitional control of trunk muscles, such as impaired voluntary contractions of the erector spinae (ES), due to damage to the neural pathways regulating sensorimotor function. Studies using conventional bipolar electromyography (EMG) showed alterations in the overall, or global, activation of the trunk muscles in people with SCI. However, how activation varied across specific regions within the ES, referred to as regional activation, remains unknown. The aim of the study was to investigate the regional distribution of th

Does age matter? The role of patient age in brain plasticity analyzed after a nerve transfer.

OBJECTIVE: Nerve transfers, which are increasingly applied not only for traumatic peripheral nerve injuries but also in oncologic reconstructions, spinal cord injuries, and a wide range of neurological disorders, rely heavily on the capacity of the central nervous system to reorganize and reassign motor control pathways. Among the multiple factors influencing postoperative recovery, age-dependent brain plasticity appears to play a critical role in determining the degree to which patients can regain functional control after reinnervation. This study aims to characterize this correlation in dept

Motor network organization in healthy development and chronic tic disorders.

Tic disorders (TD) are childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by sudden, repetitive motor and vocal tics, often with partial or complete remission by the time young adulthood is reached. We here investigated motor control and compensatory neural processes in drug-naïve children and adolescents with chronic Motor Tic Disorder or Tourette Syndrome (TD) by examining motor network activity and connectivity compared to healthy controls. Using a reaction time (RT) task under varying cueing conditions, combined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and dynamic causal m

Enhancing motor performance through brief skin cooling: exploring the role of enhanced sympathetic tone and muscle spindle sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Although brief skin cooling (BSC) is widely used in sports medicine and rehabilitation for its positive effects on motor performance, the mechanism underlying this motor facilitation effect remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To explore the hypothesis that BSC enhances muscle force generation, with cold-induced sympathetic activation leading to heightened muscle spindle sensitivity, thereby contributing to this effect. METHODS: The study involved two experiments. Experiment 1 included 14 healthy volunteers. Participants submerged their hand in ice water for 3 min. Sympathetic activity w

People with multiple sclerosis and unilateral peripheral vestibular loss demonstrate similar alterations in head and trunk turning kinematics compared to healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with peripheral vestibulopathy are known to have difficulty with volitional head turns. This leads to differences in head and body turning kinematics, compared to those without vestibular dysfunction. Multiple sclerosis (MS), a neuro-inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system, can cause vestibular dysfunction (dizziness, unsteadiness, gaze instability). However, head and trunk turning kinematics in people with MS (PwMS) have not been assessed. RESEARCH QUESTION: Will PwMS, demonstrate head and body kinematics alterations similar to individuals with a per
