[A case of brain cysticerosis].

A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the history of epileptick attack of six years' duration. The seizure was associated with Jacksonian march starting in the right hand and then generalized. Todd's paresis of the right arm followed occasionally to the seizure. He was admitted to neurosurgical unit of other hospital in 1968 and 1971, but on each occasion no tumor or vascular abnormality was detected by extensive examiniations such as brain angiography, pneumoencephalography or brain scanning. He continued his hob as an engineer with anticonvulsant. He once lived in Manchuria in

A gel-free proteomic analysis of Taenia solium and Taenia crassiceps cysticerci vesicular extracts.

The taeniasis/cysticercosis complex is a zoonosis caused by the presence of the parasite Taenia solium in humans. It is considered a neglected disease that causes serious public health and economic problems in developing countries. In humans, the most common locations for the larval form are the skeletal muscles, ocular system, and the central nervous system, which is the most clinically important. Several glycoproteins of T. solium and Taenia crassiceps cysticerci have been characterized and studied for their use in the immunodiagnosis of neurocysticercosis and/or the development of synthetic

Disseminated cysticercosis: clinical spectrum, Toll-like receptor-4 gene polymorphisms and role of albendazole: A prospective follow-up of 60 cases with a review of 56 published cases.

In this study, we describe clinical and imaging spectrum, and the natural course of patients with disseminated cysticercosis. How albendazole affects the course of disease has also been evaluated. We assessed the Toll-like receptor-4 gene polymorphisms, to know the reason for the apparently higher prevalence of disseminated cysticercosis in India.Sixty consecutive patients with disseminated cysticercosis were enrolled. Sixty age-and-sex-matched healthy controls were also enrolled for the purpose of genetic study. Twenty patients, who gave consent, were treated with albendazole along with corti

A survey of bovine cysticercosis/human taeniosis in Northern Turkana District, Kenya.

Bovine cysticercosis is a zoonosis that is mainly of socioeconomic and public health importance. A survey of this disease was carried out in Northern Turkana District, Kenya to estimate the prevalence through both serology and meat inspection, to determine the prevalence of the adult tapeworm in the human definitive host, and to determine risk factors for cattle seropositivity. This information is of public health importance and will be of use in assessing economic losses due to downgrading, refrigeration or condemnation of infested carcasses. The study area was stratified into the three lives

Third cranial nerve palsy from midbrain neurocysticercosis: repeated exacerbation on tapering corticosteroids.

Third cranial nerve palsy is rare in neurocysticercosis and is usually caused by supratentorial or sub-arachnoid lesions with accompanying hydrocephalus or meningitis. We report a patient who presented with third cranial nerve palsy caused by neurocysticercosis involving the midbrain. The patient showed repeated exacerbation of symptoms on tapering corticosteroids. The experience with this patient indicates that tapering of corticosteroids should be performed very slowly in such cases.

Taenia crassiceps: androgen reconstitution of the host leads to protection during cysticercosis.

The effects of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and 17beta-estradiol in castrated mice of both sexes infected with Taenia crassiceps cysticerci were studied. The results showed that castration and treatment with either testosterone or dihydrotestosterone before infection decreased parasite loads by 50 and 70%, respectively, while the treatment with 17beta-estradiol increased it by three times in both genders, as compared with control mice. The specific splenocyte cell proliferation and IL-2 and IFN-gamma production were depressed in infected-castrated mice of both genders, while treatment wi

Epilepsy and neurocysticercosis in an Andean community.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium neurocysticercosis (NCC) has been documented as one of the major causes of epilepsy in developing countries. However, methodological limitations have hindered the evaluation of the epidemiological relationship between cysticercosis and epilepsy at the community level. METHODS: We used the WHO protocol for epidemiological evaluation of neurological disorders to conduct a door-to-door survey among 2723 residents of San Pablo del Lago, an Ecuadorean rural community in which T. solium taeniasis/cysticercosis was known to be endemic. The WHO protocol was complemented by n

Diagnosis of porcine cysticercosis: a comparative study of serological tests for detection of circulating antibody and viable parasites.

Epidemiological studies of porcine cysticercosis require identification of pigs harbouring viable Taenia solium cysticerci and estimates of the degree of exposure to the parasite in the pig population destined for human consumption. Identification of infected pigs with viable larvae is achieved through detection of their secretory products. However, detectable levels of circulating antibody may also be present in the absence of viable larvae. In this study, both types of tests have been evaluated in groups of pigs experimentally infected with T. solium. Detection of viable cysticerci was achie

A STAT4-dependent Th1 response is required for resistance to the helminth parasite Taenia crassiceps.

To determine the role of STAT4-dependent Th1 responses in the regulation of immunity to the helminth parasite Taenia crassiceps, we monitored infections with this parasite in resistant mice lacking the STAT4 gene. While T. crassiceps-infected STAT4(+/+) mice rapidly resolved the infection, STAT4(-/-) mice were highly susceptible to infection and displayed large parasite loads. Moreover, the inability of STAT4(-/-) mice to control the infection was associated with the induction of an antigen-specific Th2-type response characterized by significantly higher levels of Th2-associated immunoglobulin

Taenia crassiceps cysticercosis: protective effect and immune response elicited by DNA immunization.

The nucleotide sequence of a protective recombinant antigen of Taenia crassiceps cysticerci present in all stages of Taenia solium (KETc7), cloned into pcDNA3 plasmid with the signal peptide sequence of the beta-glycan receptor (pTc-sp7), has been shown to be effective in protecting mice against experimental infection of T. crassiceps. To explore further the possibilities of this form of immunization and the immune response induced, mice were injected intramuscularly (i.m.) or intradermally (i.d.) with 3 doses of pTc-sp7. Similar levels of resistance were found using either i.m. or i.d. immuni

Correlation between the clinico radiological heterogeneity and the immune-inflammatory profiles in pediatric patients with neurocysticercosis from a tertiary referral centre.

INTRODUCTION: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the leading cause of epilepsy in developing world. Cysticercal lesions develop in brain depending upon a combination of host immune-inflammatory response, mainly mediated by cytokines produced by cysticercal antigens. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To correlate between MRI findings and levels of Th1/Th2 cytokines present in sera of children clinically suspected of NCC with generalized or partial seizure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty children presenting with history of seizures and/or mass effects and/or hydrocephalous, with a diagnosis of NCC based on the clinic

In vitro killing action of auranofin on Taenia crassiceps metacestode (cysticerci) and inactivation of thioredoxin-glutathione reductase (TGR).

Control of cellular redox homeostasis is a central issue for all living organisms. Glutathione and thioredoxin enzymatic redox systems are the usual mean used to achieve such a control. However, parasitic platyhelminths studied to date possess a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-dependent thioredoxin-glutathione reductase (TGR) as the sole redox control system. Thus, TGR is considered as a potential therapeutic target of parasitic platyhelminths, and based on this assumption, the gold compound auranofin is a potent inhibitor of TGR. The aim of this research was to investigate the eff

Effective immune protection of pigs against cysticercosis.

A scolex protein antigen (SPA) was prepared from cysticerci of Taenia solium obtained from naturally infected pigs. Yorkshire pigs were vaccinated with SPA plus incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA) or with SPA plus Corynebacterium parvum (CP). Controls were given IFA plus phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or CP plus PBS. All animals were given three subcutaneous injections at 20-day intervals. Ten days after the third injection, the pigs were fed with 10(4) viable eggs of T. solium. All pigs developed a delayed type hypersensitivity, and a transient eosinophilia after the first dose of vaccine. Hi

Factors associated with Taenia solium cysticercosis: analysis of nine hundred forty-six Peruvian neurologic patients. Cysticercosis Working Group in Peru (CWG).

In most developing countries, 10% of acute neurologic cases are patients with neurocysticercosis (NCC). Determining specific factors associated with contracting NCC will facilitate its diagnosis and prevention. We examined multiple socioeconomic, demographic, environmental, medical, and behavioral characteristics of 946 Peruvian neurologic patients for a correlation with NCC, which was diagnosed by the highly specific and sensitive electroimmunotransfer blot (EITB) or immunoblot assay. Eighteen percent (172 of 932) of serum samples and 28% (101 of 362) of cerebrospinal fluid samples were EITB-

Cystic echinococcosis in northern Tanzania: a pilot study in Maasai livestock-keeping communities.

BACKGROUND: There are close similarities between the life-cycles of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (E. granulosus s.l.) that causes cystic echinococcosis (CE) in humans and Taenia multiceps/Coenurus cerebralis that causes cerebral coenurosis in small ruminants. Recent evidence highlights that livestock in Maasai communities of northern Tanzania are suffering from increases in the prevalence of cerebral coenurosis, leading to concerns about a possible concurrent increased risk of human CE. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of human abdominal CE and the prevalence and spec
