Cervical cancer screening barriers and facilitators from the perspectives of women with a history of criminal-legal system involvement and substance use.

BACKGROUND: The wide availability of routine screening with Papanicolaou (Pap) tests and vaccinations against human papillomavirus has resulted in a decline in rates of cervical cancer. As with other diseases, however, disparities in incidence and mortality persist. Cervical cancer, is found more often, at later stages, and has worse outcomes in people who live in rural areas, identify as Black or Hispanic, and in people who are incarcerated. Studies report 4-5 times higher rates of cervical cancer incidence in people detained in jails and prisons than in community-based samples. Studies to ex

The role of co-occurring disorders in criminal recidivism and psychiatric recovery among adults with opioid use disorder and criminal-legal involvement: A statewide retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) in the criminal-legal system commonly present co-occurring mental health disorders. However, evidence-based treatment for high-risk populations such as those with co-occurring disorders is often unavailable within jails and prisons. Coordination of timely and affordable access to behavioral health treatment following incarceration is critical to address the multidimensional needs of people with co-occurring needs. However, the role of co-occurring disorders among adults with OUD and criminal-legal involvement who are accessing community-

The sleep justice study - a prospective cohort study assessing sleep as a cardiometabolic risk factor after incarceration: a protocol paper.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 11 million individuals are released from U.S. jails and prisons each year. Individuals with a history of incarceration have higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and mortality compared to the general population, especially in the weeks following release from carceral facilities. Healthy sleep, associated with cardiovascular health, is an underexplored factor in the epidemiology of CVD in this population. Incarcerated people may have unique individual, environmental, and institutional policy-level reasons for being sleep deficient. The social and physical

"I was reaching out for help and they did not help me": Mental healthcare in the carceral state.

BACKGROUND: Despite the limitations the carceral environment may impose on mental wellness, mental healthcare is increasingly becoming a carceral endeavor. Over the course of the last several decades, prisons and jails have become the de facto mental healthcare provider for thousands of incarcerated individuals. Furthermore, practices like mandated mental healthcare for supervised individuals further broaden the population experiencing mental healthcare within the criminal legal system at large. This study examines the perspectives of nine individuals who experienced mental healthcare within t

Impaired driving among rural female drug-involved offenders.

OBJECTIVE: Very little is known about rural female impaired drivers despite disproportionate rates of impaired driving arrests and associated traffic fatalities in rural areas. The present study examined past-year impaired driving histories and impaired driving correlates in a sample of rural female drug-involved offenders. METHODS: Female drug-involved offenders (N = 400) from 3 rural jails completed a confidential interview focused on substance use and related risk behaviors. After removing cases with missing data (n = 23), participants self-reporting past-year impaired driving (n = 254) we

Public Health Response to COVID-19 Cases in Correctional and Detention Facilities - Louisiana, March-April 2020.

Correctional and detention facilities face unique challenges in the control of infectious diseases, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (1-3). Among >10 million annual admissions to U.S. jails, approximately 55% of detainees are released back into their communities each week (4); in addition, staff members at correctional and detention facilities are members of their local communities. Thus, high rates of COVID-19 in correctional and detention facilities also have the potential to influence broader community transmission. In March 2020, the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) began

Arsenic in US correctional facility drinking water, 2006-2011.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the quality of drinking water in US correctional facilities (e.g. detention centers, prisons, jails, etc.). Our objective was to determine if incarcerated persons are at risk for chronic, elevated arsenic exposure relative to the non-incarcerated US population, particularly in the Southwestern US where public water and groundwater arsenic concentrations are high compared to the rest of the US. METHODS: We analyzed 230,158 arsenic monitoring records from 37,086 community water systems (CWSs) from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Third Six Year Revie

Fifteen years of heroin-assisted treatment in a Swiss prison-a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the current US opioid crisis and the compelling fact that a quarter to a third of all those addicted to heroin pass through its prisons and jails each year, the care of incarcerated opioid-using individuals (OUI) needs to be improved. AIMS: Little has been published on the effectiveness or outcomes of heroin-assisted treatment (HAT), a treatment option for severely dependent OUI delivered in a prison setting. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate such treatment since its implementation. The primary objective was to investigate whether heroin-assisted tr

"A lot of moving parts": Recovery home challenges linking and housing individuals with criminal legal system involvement.

INTRODUCTION: There are high rates of substance use disorder (SUD) among people released from carceral settings and, upon release, many of these people also face unstable housing situations, posing challenges to connecting with resources to facilitate SUD recovery. Recovery homes provide a temporary sober living environment for those seeking both SUD recovery and transition back to the community after carceral release. However, successful recovery home placement for this population can prove difficult, and there is a need for research to identify ways to overcome them. METHODS: The current qu

Medications for opioid use disorder among pregnant women referred by criminal justice agencies before and after Medicaid expansion: A retrospective study of admissions to treatment centers in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Criminal justice involvement is common among pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD). Medications for OUD improve pregnancy-related outcomes, but trends in treatment data among justice-involved pregnant women are limited. We sought to examine trends in medications for OUD among pregnant women referred to treatment by criminal justice agencies and other sources before and after the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a serial, cross-sectional analysis using 1992-2017 data from pregnant women admitted to treatment facilities for OUD usi

Assessment of need for inpatient treatment for mental disorder among female prisoners: a cross-sectional study of provincially detained women in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: International studies show a consistent finding of women in prisons as having a high prevalence of mental disorder. Most will be treated within the prison however the most severely ill require transfer to a hospital facility. The primary aim of our study was to survey the total provincial female prison population in Ontario, Canada, to determine the proportion that require treatment in a psychiatric hospital, and the security level required. The secondary aim was to investigate the validity and psychometric properties of DUNDRUM-1 and DUNDRUM-2 in making these assessments. METHODS

Finding safety: a pilot study of managed alcohol program participants' perceptions of housing and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: There is a higher prevalence of alcohol use and severe alcohol dependence among homeless populations. The combination of alcohol use and lack of housing contributes to increased vulnerability to the harms of substance use including stigma, injury, illness, and death. Managed alcohol programs (MAPs) administer prescribed doses of alcohol at regular intervals to people with severe and chronic alcohol dependence and homelessness. As a pilot for a larger national study of MAPs, we conducted an in-depth evaluation of one program in Ontario, Canada. In this paper, we report on housing an

Exploring access to desired and appropriate contraception during incarceration: A qualitative description of the experiences of women in custody in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Women who experience incarceration lack equitable access and often face barriers to reproductive healthcare, including unmet needs for contraception. Previous studies have demonstrated that women who experience incarceration may want access to contraception and that providing contraception in prisons is feasible; however, it is unclear how this population wants to access contraception, and what their preference is for different forms of contraception. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore whether and how people with the capacity for pregnancy would like to access contraceptive education

Bioresorbable flow-diverters for cerebral aneurysms: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Bioresorbable flow diverters (BRFDs) are emerging as next-generation alternatives to permanent metallic stents for intracranial aneurysm flow diversion. These devices aim to provide temporary flow diversion that scaffolds aneurysm healing and then dissolves, potentially reducing chronic foreign-body risks. METHODS: We performed a systematic review (PRISMA methodology) updated to August 2025 to assess BRFD technology and performance. Seventeen studies (2013–2025) met inclusion criteria, describing 27 prototype BRFDs. RESULTS: Devices varied widely in material and design. Many were f

Postmortem Toxicology Positivity for Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Illinois Unintentional Opioid Overdose Deaths 2019-2024.

OBJECTIVES: Currently, most unintentional opioid overdose deaths (OODs) in the United States are attributed to fentanyl. Buprenorphine and methadone reduce mortality associated with opioid use disorder. Despite the protective effects of these medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), adverse outcomes are possible. The aim of this study is to describe the detection of MOUD in unintentional fentanyl-attributed OODs in Illinois. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of unintentional overdose deaths using the Illinois Statewide Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting Syst

Transcatheter Harmony pulmonary valve placement in the right pulmonary artery followed by stenting of a hypoplastic left pulmonary artery.

We report the case of a 60-year-old man with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot and long-standing severe pulmonary insufficiency, complicated by asymmetric pulmonary blood flow and anatomy unsuitable for standard right ventricular outflow tract valve implantation. Cardiac imaging demonstrated a pyramidal right ventricular outflow tract that did not meet the oversizing criteria for a Harmony TPV 25, with the lack of interference with the inflow part of the device. In addition, the left pulmonary artery was severely hypoplastic with proximal stenosis. To avoid jailing the left pulmonary artery and hig

Rethinking on the interplay of substance abuse and mental health in Indian prisons: a critical analysis.

The intricate relationship between substance addiction and mental health among India's prison population is a formidable task for these institutions. These disorders include psychotic illness, neurotic disorders, substance abuse, personality disorders, and mood disorders. High levels of depression and anxiety, in which substance addiction and mental illness frequently coexist, exacerbate the issue and worsen the outlook for those who are affected. In India, there are many obstacles in the way of inmates with mental health issues facing inappropriate care and inadequate medication administratio

Expanding on the factor structure and construct validity of the Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) in a general correctional sample.

Research finds better reentry/recidivism program outcomes when individuals receive services that match their risks and needs. As such, the Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) was developed to identify risk of future violence/offending, strengths, and targets for treatment. More empirical evidence is needed to characterize the psychometric properties of the START in general correctional settings before it may be used in practice. The current preregistered study explored the factor structures of the START strengths and vulnerabilities items, and reliability and construct valid

Inflammation Mediates the Effects of Incarceration on Chronic Health Conditions: Results from a Nationally Representative Sample of Older Adults.

PURPOSE: The U.S. leads the world in incarceration, and individuals with incarceration histories have poorer health outcomes. Inflammation has been proposed as a mechanism linking incarceration and chronic disease, but empirical evidence remains limited. This study tested whether inflammation mediates the association between incarceration and chronic health conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Incarceration history was assessed via self-report of spending ≥3 consecutive days in jail or prison. Inflammation was measured using C-reactive
