BACKGROUND: Tetanus is a life threatening preventable infection relatively uncommon in the developed world but occurs frequently in developing countries with case fatality rate of 40-60%. We conducted the study as there is no recent review regarding adult tetanus in Ethiopia which looked at the predisposing factors, presenting features and case fatality rate.
OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate clinical characteristics of adult tetanus as related to predisposing factors, presenting features and treatment outcome.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of adult tetanus cases admitted to me

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the cytokine receptor-like factor 1 (CRLF1) gene are responsible for Crisponi/Cold-induced Sweat Syndrome, an extremely rare autosomal-recessive multisystem disorder. The protein encoded is a soluble cytokine receptor, involved in the ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor (CNTFR) pathway. The ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) promotes corneal wound healing and patients with Crisponi/CISS1 syndrome suffer from recurrent keratitis. The aim of the study was to report and discuss the corneal alterations in Crisponi/CISS1 rare disease.

BACKGROUND: Ludwig's angina is a life-threatening cellulitis that can easily progress to airway compromise. Significant infection, often from periodontal abscesses of the molar teeth, may cause superior and posterior displacement of the tongue compromising patient's airways if not identified and treated promptly. Early recognition and clinical diagnosis, with or without imaging and blood cultures, and antibiotic treatment can help prevent rapid airway compromise, systemic infection and Le Mierre's disease (a rare life-threatening complication). Given that emergency departments are often the fi

Sarcomas in the head and neck area are rare diseases with an incidence of under 1% of all head and neck malignant tumours. Osteosarcomas or osteogenic sarcomas consist of neoplastic cells that produce osteoid bone or immature bone. Sarcomas develop more in the mandible than the maxilla. The exact diagnosis of different types of sarcomas is based on the immunohistochemical investigation. These rare tumours are of mesenchymal origin; osteosarcomas and chondrosarcomas are the most common types-Ewing's sarcomas. The use of proton beam radiotherapy in the treatment of osteosarcoma of the maxilla is

BACKGROUND: Rebound cholinergic syndrome is a rare, but well known unwanted phenomenon occurring after abrupt clozapine discontinuation. There have been previous reported cases of cholinergic rebound in the literature; however, these reports described cholinergic rebound following cessation of high doses of clozapine in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Here, we report a case of rebound cholinergic syndrome and catatonia in a male patient three days after abrupt discontinuation of 50 mg of clozapine prescribed for type I bipolar affective disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cleft palate is one of the most common congenital malformations in the maxillofacial region. After a cleft palate repair, surgeons must deal with the transverse growth restriction and palatal fistulas caused by scar tissue on the raw bone surface around the hard palate. This report describes the technique of the buccinator musculomucosal flap procedure performed together with repair of the cleft palate. The objective is to cover exposed bone areas of the hard palate to decrease scar contraction and subsequent transverse maxillary growth restriction, as well as tension at the closur

To investigate the short-term effects of maxillary distraction osteogenesis (DO) on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function in 21 subjects with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Design - Morphological changes in the maxillofacial region were measured using lateral cephalometric radiographs taken immediately before (pre-DO) and after DO (post-DO) and 1 year after DO (1-year follow-up). A questionnaire was evaluated using a visual analog scale. A chi-square test was used to compare the prevalence of TMJ symptoms between pre-DO and 1-year follow-up. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to deter

Three cases of tetanus in Singapore are presented. One local resident had cephalic tetanus most likely secondary to otitis media and the other two, residents from surrounding Asean countries, had generalised tetanus. The portal of entry was a puncture wound on the foot in one patient and the ear in another. No portal of entry was identified in one patient. All three patients required tracheostomy, ventilatory support and intensive care management for periods ranging from 11 to 22 days. One patient died from complications of nosocomial septicaemia and one patient required prolonged rehabilitati

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition (CPP) and synovial chondromatosis (SC) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is rarely reported. CPP disease (CPPD) is complex arthritis synonymous with excessive pyrophosphate production and variable aberrations in mineral and organic phase metabolism of the joint cartilage, leading to local inundated CPP and crystal deposition of partially deciphered predispositions. Meanwhile, SC is a rare benign synovial joint proliferative disease of unclear etiology and has a low risk of malignant transformation. However, SC

INTRODUCTION: The removal of impacted teeth is one of the most common procedures performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Reduction of discomfort post-operatively and efficient local anesthesia are imperative for success in surgical practice. At sub-anesthetic doses, ketamine has a noticeable analgesic action, which can be used to supplement local anesthesia with minimal side effects.
AIM: To assess the efficacy of low-dose ketamine as an adjunct to local anesthesia in the management of pain, swelling and trismus after surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars.

OBJECTIVES: Myhre-LAPS syndrome is a recently recognized disease caused by a mutation in the SMAD4 gene. This results in a range of pathology including laryngotracheal stenosis, arthropathy, prognathism and short stature, or LAPS syndrome. We aim to delineate the role of intubation in development of airway stenosis in these patients as well as provide insight into diagnosis and management of this syndrome. Herein we present four patients with Myhre-LAPS syndrome complicated by airway stenosis and perform a systematic review of all cases of Myhre-LAPS syndrome with reported airway pathology.

OBJECTIVES: To provide a description of type 2 Gaucher disease. To attempt to define type 2 Gaucher disease within the spectrum of early-onset neuronopathic Gaucher disease.
BACKGROUND: Type 2 Gaucher disease is a rare disorder due to glucocerebrosidase deficiency that comprises a rapidly progressing neurological degeneration associated with visceral signs. Most data collected rely on the description of single cases or siblings. Cases of perinatal-lethal Gaucher disease are frequently considered as type 2 Gaucher patients, though the clinical presentation is different.

Lateral transcranial TMJ radiographs are duplicable within +/- 0.2 mm and are cross-sectional views of the lateral third of the condyle and fossa. The innate asymmetry of humans, when the right and left sides of the fossa and condyle are compared, was clinically insignificant. Tomograms are not indicated because they lack appropriate resolution and detail to evaluate qualitative bone changes; and because they are not an in-office procedure, the condylar position in the fossa is completely unreliable. A correlation was reported between condylar position in the fossa and TMJ dysfunction in over
