Decrease in head sway as a measure of sensory integration following vestibular rehabilitation: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which sensory integration strategies via head sway, derived from a Head-Mounted Display (HMD), change in people with vestibular disorders following vestibular rehabilitation. DESIGN: Randomized Controlled TrialSetting:Vestibular Rehabilitation ClinicParticipants:Thirty participants with vestibular dysfunction and 21 age-matched controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants experienced two levels of visual surround (static or moving 'stars', front to back at 0.2 Hz, 32 mm) and white noise (none or rhythmic) while their head s

The role of vestibular cues in postural sway.

Controlling posture requires continuous sensory feedback about body motion and orientation, including from the vestibular organs. Little is known about the role of tilt vs. translation vs. rotation vestibular cues. We examined whether intersubject differences in vestibular function were correlated with intersubject differences in postural control. Vestibular function was assayed using vestibular direction-recognition perceptual thresholds, which determine the smallest motion that can be reliably perceived by a subject seated on a motorized platform in the dark. In study A, we measured threshol

Health-related quality of life and functional impairment in acute vestibular disorders.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute vestibular symptoms have a profound impact on patients' well-being. In this study, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and functional impairment were investigated prospectively in patients with different peripheral and central vestibular disorders during the acute symptomatic stage to decipher the most relevant underlying factors. METHODS: In all, 175 patients with acute vestibular disorders were categorized as central vestibular (CV, n = 40), peripheral vestibular (PV, n = 68) and episodic vestibular disorders (EV, n = 67). All patients completed scores to qu

Dynamic visual acuity during passive and self-generated transient head rotation in normal and unilaterally vestibulopathic humans.

To determine whether dynamic visual acuity (DVA) during head rotations on the stationary body can lateralize unilateral vestibular deafferentation and detect non-labyrinthine compensation mechanisms, 15 normal and 11 subjects with unilateral vestibular deafferentation underwent manually imposed and self-generated transient yaw head rotations during measurement of binocular DVA. DVA was measured by a four-alternative, forced choice, staircase procedure with optotype presentation only when head velocity exceeded thresholds of 50 degree or 75 degree/s. Eye and head movements were recorded using s

Mobile Health Strategies to Tackle Skin Neglected Tropical Diseases With Recommendations From Innovative Experiences: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) represent a diverse group of 20 communicable diseases that occur in tropical and subtropical areas in 149 countries, affecting over 1 billion people and costing developing economies billions of dollars every year. Within these diseases, those that present lesions on the skin surface are classified as skin NTDs (sNTDs). Mobile health interventions are currently being used worldwide to manage skin diseases and can be a good strategy in the epidemiological and clinical management of sNTDs. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyze existing evidence about mobil

The cost-effectiveness of an eradication programme in the end game: Evidence from guinea worm disease.

BACKGROUND: Of the three diseases targeted for eradication by WHO, two are so-called Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)-guinea worm disease (GWD) and yaws. The Guinea Worm Eradication Programme (GWEP) is in its final stages, with only 25 reported in 2016. However, global eradication still requires certification by WHO of the absence of transmission in all countries. We analyze the cost-effectiveness of the GWEP in the end game, when the number of cases is lower and the cost per case is higher than at any other time. Ours is the first economic evaluation of the GWEP since a World Bank study in

Anthropological and palaeopathological analysis of the human remains from three "Tombs of the Nobles" of the necropolis of Thebes-west, upper Egypt.

During several recent excavation campaigns at the necropolis of Sheikh-Abd-el-Gurna, Thebes-West, Upper Egypt, we investigated the human remains of three "Tombs of the Nobles" totalling at least 273 individuals. The investigation covered the human material (skeletons and mummy residues) from the tombs TT-84, TT-85 and TT-95. These tombs had been built in the New Kingdom (approx. 1500-1000 B.C.) and used until the Late period (up to 330 BC). All samples were analyzed macroscopically, isolated findings were further investigated by endoscopic and radiological techniques. The at least 273 individu

Probability-Driven Adaptive Foot-Mounted Inertial Navigation with Local Straight-Heading and Stair-Height Constraints.

Foot-mounted inertial pedestrian navigation is an attractive infrastructure-free solution for pedestrian positioning in environments where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are unavailable, degraded, or intentionally excluded. However, mixed-gait and multi-level motion expose two persistent failure modes: unreliable zero-velocity detection during high-dynamic motion and weak yaw observability after standard zero-velocity-aided filtering. This paper presents a probability-driven adaptive foot-mounted inertial navigation framework that couples a lightweight motion-probability fro

Sensitization of Visually Induced Motion Sickness by Prior Provocative Physical Motion.

INTRODUCTION: Habituation to motion has therapeutic applications for motion sickness desensitization and rehabilitation of patients with vestibular disease. Less attention has been devoted to the opposite process: sensitization. METHODS: Subjects (N = 50) were randomly allocated to four sequences: Baseline visual stimulus; then 15 min of time gap; cross-coupled motion (C-C) or a Control condition; then a time gap of 15 min or 2 h; then a retest visual stimulus. Motion exposures were for 10 min or until moderate nausea, whichever was sooner. The visual stimulus was a scene rotating in yaw at 0

Technical Note: Rotational positional error corrected intrafraction set-up margins in stereotactic radiotherapy: A spatial assessment for coplanar and noncoplanar geometry.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to calculate setup margin based on six-dimensional (6D) corrected residual positional errors from kV cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and from intrafraction projection kV imaging in coplanar and in noncoplanar couch positions in stereotactic radiotherapy. METHODS: Six dimensional positional corrections were carried out before patient treatments, using a robotic couch and CBCT matching. A CBCT and stereoscopic ExacTrac image were acquired post-table position correction. Further, a series of intrafraction ExacTrac images were obtained for the variable couch

Enhancing the accuracy of genioplasty using mixed reality and computer-aided design/manufacturing: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Genioplasty is performed as part of orthognathic surgery to correct jaw deformities. This procedure presents challenges in terms of osteosynthesis accuracy. This study aimed to evaluate the precision of preoperative planning in genioplasty using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) with three-dimensional (3D) printable biomaterials and mixed reality (MR) technology with a head-mounted display (Microsoft® HoloLens 2) and a registration marker. METHODS: Twenty-six patients underwent genioplasty using either only CAD/CAM devices (control group, n=10) or CAD/CA

Identifying Gravity-Related Artifacts on Ballistocardiography Signals by Comparing Weightlessness and Normal Gravity Recordings (ARTIFACTS): Protocol for an Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Modern ballistocardiography (BCG) and seismocardiography (SCG) use acceleration sensors to measure oscillating recoil movements of the body caused by the heartbeat and blood flow, which are transmitted to the body surface. Acceleration artifacts occur through intrinsic sensor roll, pitch, and yaw movements, assessed by the angular velocities of the respective sensor, during measurements that bias the signal interpretation. OBJECTIVE: This observational study aims to generate hypotheses on the detection and elimination of acceleration artifacts due to the intrinsic rotation of acce

Can head sway patterns differentiate between patients with Meniere's disease vs. peripheral vestibular hypofunction?

BACKGROUND: Meniere's disease (MD) is defined by episodic vertigo, unilateral sensorineural hearing loss and fluctuating aural symptoms. Due to the variable clinical presentation, objective tests of MD may have significant diagnostic utility. Head kinematics derived from a head-mounted display (HMD) have demonstrated to be sensitive to vestibular dysfunction. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate whether head sway can differentiate between patients with MD, vestibular hypofunction (VH) and healthy controls. MATERIALS/METHODS: 80 adults (30 healthy controls, 32 with VH, and 18 wit

Exploring the effects of 3D-360°VR and 2D viewing modes on gaze behavior, head excursion, and workload during a boxing specific anticipation task.

INTRODUCTION: Recent evidence has started to demonstrate that 360°VR, a type of VR that immerses a user within a 360° video, has advantages over two-dimensional (2D) video displays in the context of perceptual-cognitive evaluation and training. However, there is currently a lack of empirical evidence to explain how perceptual-cognitive strategies differ between these two paradigms when performing sports-related tasks. Thus, the objective of this study was to examine and compare the impact of different viewing conditions (e.g., 3D-360°VR and 2D video displays), on gaze behavior and head excursi

The orientation of the cervical vertebral column in unrestrained awake animals. I. Resting position.

The orientation of the cervical vertebral column was studied by X-ray photography of the region containing the head and the neck in nine unrestrained species of vertebrates (man, monkey, cat, rabbit, guinea pig, rat, chicken, frog, lizard). In addition, the orientation of the horizontal semicircular canals was measured in four species using landmarks on the skull. In all vertebrates studied, with the exception of frog and lizard, the general orientation of the cervical vertebral column was vertical when animals were at rest, and not horizontal or oblique as suggested by the macroscopic appeara
