Unexplained Intra-abdominal Abscess: A Case Report and Literature Review.

This is the case of a 65-year-old female patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who presented following a fall and was found to have a humeral fracture. Initial evaluation showed sepsis of unknown origin, leukocytosis, and elevated inflammatory markers. Persistent abdominal pain prompted imaging studies, which showed multiloculated intra-abdominal abscesses. Ultrasound-guided drainage yielded Streptococcus anginosus and Bacteroides fragilis. Antibiotics, along with percutaneous drainage, resulted in a good clinical response. Follow-up imaging revealed a decrease in the absce

Late intra-abdominal abscess after laparoscopic appendectomy in a child.

Appendectomy is the most common surgical emergency managed by laparoscopic surgeons and is usually a straightforward procedure with minimal morbidity. However, rare complications can arise in the immediate post-operative period. We report a late occurrence of intra-abdominal abscess 2 years after laparoscopic appendectomy probably related to silk suture used to ligate the base of the appendix during index surgery. The patient recovered after laparoscopic drainage of the abscess and retrieval of silk suture.

Abdominal wall abscess resembling urachal carcinoma caused by ileal diverticulitis.

INTRODUCTION: We report a rare case of abdominal wall abscess caused by ileal diverticulitis that developed along the midline below the umbilicus and resembled a urachal carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old woman with diabetes presented with abdominal enlargement below the umbilicus. Computed tomography revealed a well-enhanced mass, which was visualized on magnetic resonance imaging as a continuous mass connected to the restiform structure, extending from the umbilicus to the bladder. As the mass showed high uptake on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, urachal carcin

Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis Liver Abscess after Blunt Abdominal Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis is among the most reported serotypes of Salmonella species worldwide, but is rarely reported as the causative agent of a liver abscess. CASE REPORT: We present a patient with an abdominal blunt trauma. An initial abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a rupture of the right kidney and of the liver. Two days later, his physical state deteriorated and a new computed tomography scan was obtained. An extremely large 8-centimetre liver abscess was verified. Due to the unsatisfying response to antibiotic therapy and percutaneous drainage, we

Intra-Abdominal Abscess and Primary Peritonitis Caused by Streptococcus anginosus.

INTRODUCTION: The Streptococcus anginosus group of bacteria are low-virulence bacteria existing as commensals in the oral flora and gastrointestinal tracts of humans. S. anginosus may spread to the blood in individuals with poor oral hygiene in cases of oral infections, such as gingivitis and tooth abscesses, that develop following the loss of mucosal unity. This may lead to infections in the whole body, primarily as brain and liver abscesses. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old male patient presented with complaints of nausea, vomiting, and diffuse abdominal pain. Diffuse abdominal tenderness a

Percutaneous postoperative intra-abdominal abscess drainage after elective colorectal surgery.

Intra-abdominal abscesses are a frequent source of morbidity and mortality following both elective and emergent surgery of the alimentary tract. CT-guided percutaneous drainage of intra-abdominal abscess is an alternative to immediate surgical intervention. We studied the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous drainage of intra-abdominal abscesses arising after elective colorectal procedures. We retrospectively identified 40 patients with postoperative intraabdominal abscess following elective colorectal surgery who underwent CT-guided percutaneous drainage w

[Abdominal lymphoma with abscess and thoracic perforation: en-bloc resection].

The authors compare a rare case of acute onset Gastric Lymphoma with that present in the literature. The patient, a white 67 year-old man, was admitted to hospital in severe general condition. On CT scan an opacity of the pleura and a subtotal collapse of the left lung associated with a mass infiltrating the diaphragm, the gastric fundus and pancreas were seen. After 48 hours from the admission an operation was performed. The abdominal mass infiltrating the stomach, the spleen and the left thorax was resected en-bloc by laparotomy. A Boulau drainage was inserted. The histology showed an high m

Incidental tubo-ovarian abscess at abdominal delivery: a case report.

Tubo-ovarian abscess in the third trimester of pregnancy is extremely rare. In this report, an unusual case with asymptomatic tubo-ovarian abscess, diagnosed incidentally during Cesarean section performed for an obstetric indication, is presented. Unlike other reported cases, no signs or symptoms attributable to pelvic abscess throughout the pregnancy were observed in our patient. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such a case in the literature.

Perinephric abscess (presenting as abdominal pain) due to Listeria monocytogenes.

A 5-year-old malnourished child was admitted with a 1-week history of paroxysmal abdominal pain. Evaluation finally revealed a left-sided perinephric abscess caused by Listeria monocytogenes. The child was successfully treated by drainage of the abscess and antibiotic therapy. Renal abscess should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain, and Listeria, an unusual pathogen, should be considered as a possible aetiology.

Abdominal wall abscess due to Mycolicibacterium neworleansense: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are widely distributed in the natural environment and can cause skin and soft tissue infections, typically through traumatic injuries or invasive medical procedures, especially in susceptible populations. Commonly encountered pathogens include Mycobacterium marinum and Mycobacterium abscessus, among others. However, cutaneous infections caused by Mycolicibacterium neworleansense are extremely rare. This report presents a case of abdominal wall abscess caused by Mycolicibacterium neworleansense, which was successfully managed with surgical debrid

Conservative Management of Postoperative Urinary Leak and Intra-Abdominal Abscess.

Ureteral injury is a rare occurrence in medical practice. Most cases encountered stem from blunt trauma or are iatrogenic, occurring during open abdominal or pelvic surgery and laparoscopic procedures. Prompt diagnosis of ureteral injury allows clinicians to avoid complications including ureteral strictures, abscess, renal failure, sepsis, and loss of the ipsilateral kidney. Treatment depends on whether the ureteral injury was discovered intraoperatively or if it was a delayed diagnosis. Several procedures can be used, including ureteroureterostomy, ureteroileal interposition, and nephrectomy.

Abdominal foreign body: late presentation as a rectus sheath abscess.

Intra-abdominal ingested foreign bodies are usually an incidental finding, typically encountered in mentally challenged patients. We present the case of a 65-year-old mentally sound woman who presented with recurrent abdominal pain and a lump in the hypogastrium. Evaluation revealed a rectus sheath abscess extending to the peritoneum, with a foreign body in situ. On enquiry, the patient revealed that she had accidentally ingested a tailoring needle 17 years ago. This case illustrates an unusual presentation of an ingested foreign body as a rectus sheath abscess after a long duration.

Percutaneous imaging-guided abdominal and pelvic abscess drainage in children.

Percutaneous imaging-guided drainage is the first-line treatment for infected or symptomatic fluid collections in the abdomen and pelvis, in the absence of indications for immediate surgery. The technology and expertise needed to perform percutaneous abscess drainage are widely available and readily adapted for use in the pediatric population. Catheter insertion procedures include the trocar and Seldinger techniques. Imaging guidance for drainage is most commonly performed with ultrasonography (US), computed tomography, or US and fluoroscopy combined. Abscesses in locations that are difficult

Heterotopic gastric mucosa associated with abdominal abscess formation, hypotension, and acute abdominal pain in a puppy.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the presence of heterotopic gastric mucosa forming an abscess associated with acute abdominal pain and shock in a puppy. CASE SUMMARY: A 7-month-old male intact Shih-Tzu was presented to the emergency service for evaluation of a 12-hour history of vomiting and lethargy progressing to weakness. On presentation, the puppy was obtunded and hypotensive. Radiographs revealed an ill-defined mid-ventral abdominal mass. Ultrasound revealed an echogenic, fluid-filled mass associated with the jejunum. The puppy had an exploratory celiotomy and a 2 × 4 cm oval fluid-filled soft ti

Intra-abdominal abscess caused by Streptococcus constellatus in an immunocompetent patient.

Streptococcus constellatus is a Gram-positive commensal bacterium of the oropharyngeal, gastrointestinal and urogenital flora. It can cause abscesses in different parts of the body, especially in immunocompromised patients. We present the clinical case of a 33-year-old female patient with a previous history of one anastomosis gastric bypass, among others. The patient was hospitalized two years after surgery for peritonitis secondary to a perforation in the biliopancreatic loop, underwent laparoscopic surgery and was hospitalised for two weeks. Fifteen days after being discharged from the hospi
