Ultrasound measures of abdominal fat layers correlate with metabolic syndrome features in patients with obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal fat ultrasound (US) is a simple clinical tool that may allow measures of fat depots not visible using common dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) or computerized tomography (CT) imaging. The aim of this study was to validate the technique, give measures of superficial and profound subcutaneous, preperitoneal, omental and perirenal (retroperitoneal) fat and correlate them with MS markers. METHODS: Sequential US measures of these five abdominal fat layers were done at 397 adults. Blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), waist, body fat %, HOMA-IR index (homeostatic mo

Excess abdominal fat is associated with cutaneous allodynia in individuals with migraine: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the specific relationship between cutaneous allodynia (CA) and the percentages of body fat (BF) and abdominal fat in migraineurs. Additionally, we compared serum levels of inflammatory biomarkers in patients with and without CA. BACKGROUND: Excess abdominal fat might facilitate progressive changes in nociceptive thresholds causing central sensitization, clinically reflected as CA, which could drive migraine progression. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 80 patients with migraine (mean age 39 years, 81.2% female) and 39 non-migraine controls. We analyse

Radiographic depiction of intra-abdominal fat in newborns: a marker of infants born to diabetic mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the presence of intra-abdominal fat (IAF) in newborns is diagnostic of infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs), and determine whether IAF is merely the consequence of increased body size. STUDY DESIGN: Abdominal radiographs of 277 neonates >34 weeks gestational age (147 male and 130 female) were reviewed to determine the presence of IAF. Unpaired t-test and regression analyses were used to examine the influence of gestational age, birth weight, birth length and maternal diabetes on the prevalence and thickness of IAF. RESULT: The prevalence of IAF was higher in IDMs

Visceral abdominal fat measured by computed tomography is associated with an increased risk of colorectal adenoma.

We investigated whether visceral adipose tissue (VAT) measured by computed tomography (CT) is a risk factor for colorectal adenoma. For a total of 1,328 patients (857 without adenoma, 471 with colorectal adenoma) undergoing colonoscopy and CT, associations between colorectal adenoma and body mass index (BMI), VAT area and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) were assessed using odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusted for age, sex, family history, smoking, alcohol intake, diabetes mellitus, aspirin use and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use. Multivariate analysis showed

Mobile encapsulated bodies comprising fat necrosis and fibrous tissue in the abdominal cavity of cows.

The microscopical features of 18 samples of fat necrosis and/or fibrous tissue removed from the abdominal cavity during laparotomy from 15 cows were studied. The nodular, ivory-coloured mobile structures were free-floating in the abdominal cavity, were not attached to any abdominal tissues or organs, and were completely surrounded by a fibrous capsule. Abdominal fat necrosis (bovine lipomatosis) was not observed in any animal. The structures comprised either necrotic fat, fibrous tissue or varying proportions of both. Focal calcification and mild inflammatory cell infiltration and accumulation

Body mass index, abdominal fatness, fat mass and the risk of atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective studies.

Different adiposity measures have been associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation, however, results have previously only been summarized for BMI. We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies to clarify the association between different adiposity measures and risk of atrial fibrillation. PubMed and Embase databases were searched up to October 24th 2016. Summary relative risks (RRs) were calculated using random effects models. Twenty-nine unique prospective studies (32 publications) were included. Twenty-five studies (83,006 cases, 2,405,381 part

RNA-Seq Analysis of Abdominal Fat in Genetically Fat and Lean Chickens Highlights a Divergence in Expression of Genes Controlling Adiposity, Hemostasis, and Lipid Metabolism.

Genetic selection for enhanced growth rate in meat-type chickens (Gallus domesticus) is usually accompanied by excessive adiposity, which has negative impacts on both feed efficiency and carcass quality. Enhanced visceral fatness and several unique features of avian metabolism (i.e., fasting hyperglycemia and insulin insensitivity) mimic overt symptoms of obesity and related metabolic disorders in humans. Elucidation of the genetic and endocrine factors that contribute to excessive visceral fatness in chickens could also advance our understanding of human metabolic diseases. Here, RNA sequenci

Cryo-EM structures of light chain fibrils from abdominal fat biopsies of multiple myeloma patients.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy characterized by the abnormal proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow and is closely associated with systemic light chain amyloidosis (AL), a disease triggered by the amyloid aggregation of antibody light chain (LC). High-resolution structures of amyloid LC fibrils from MM patients remain largely unexplored. Here, we extracted LC amyloid fibrils directly from abdominal fat biopsies of two living MM patients. Using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), we further determined the structures of three distinct LC fibril morphologies, which

Anterior-Posterior Abdominal Diameter and Waist Circumference Have Comparable Predictive Ability for Visceral Fat Area.

OBJECTIVE: Waist circumference measurement is commonly used as a method for predicting the visceral fat area. However, waist circumference is difficult to measure, and there is a large margin of error between measurements. Visceral fat is adipose tissue that accumulates in the abdominal cavity, and when it accumulates in excess, abdominal computed tomography reveals a prominent protrusion of the anterior-posterior diameter of the abdomen in a coronal section at the umbilicus level. Individuals with obesity often show forward abdominal protrusions. This study aimed to verify whether the anterio

Sexual dimorphism and pro-atherogenic computed tomography radiomic phenotypes of subcutaneous and visceral abdominal fat.

BACKGROUND: Standard body fat metrics fail to capture the unique biological characteristics of subcutaneous (SAF) and visceral (VAF) abdominal fat. We characterized computed tomography (CT) radiomic profiles of SAF and VAF, identified sex-specific and pro-atherogenic signatures, and assessed their incremental value in cardiovascular risk assessment. METHODS: In 1736 adults without known coronary artery disease, we extracted size, first- and second-order (texture) features of SAF, VAF, and total abdominal fat (TAF) from non-contrast CT. Dietary supplement of veratric acid alleviates liver steatosis and reduces abdominal fat deposition in broilers.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obesity are nutritional metabolic diseases that are prevalent in the poultry industry, and have a negative impact on its functioning. Veratric acid (VA) is a phenolic acid compound extracted from the Chinese herbal medicine Trollius chinensis Bunge, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In this study, we used chicken hepatocytes (Leghorn male hepatoma cells) and treated with a mixture of oleic acid and palmitic acid as well as Yellow-feathered broilers fed a high-fat diet to examine the impact of VA on liver-lipid metabolism an
