Intra-abdominal pressure and trunk muscle activity during lifting. IV. The causal factors of the intra-abdominal pressure rise.

The intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) has been regarded as important for stabilization and relief of the lumbar spine when exposed to heavy loads, such as when lifting. Previous trials, however, have failed to increase the IAP by abdominal muscle training. Twenty healthy subjects, 20 low-back patients and 10 weight-lifters, were tested with various breathing techniques in order to elucidate the causal factors of the IAP rise during lifting and the effects respiration. Those with high IAP and low IAP as well as those with great variations in IAP underwent an extended program. The intra-abdominal a

Bladder Base Displacement during Abdominal Muscles Contraction and Functional Activities in Primiparous Women Assessed by Transabdominal Ultrasound: A Descriptive Study.

This study described the response of the bladder base (BB) by transabdominal ultrasound in primiparous women during movements that activate the abdominopelvic cavity musculature and cause variations in intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 64 primiparous women at eight weeks after uncomplicated delivery. BB displacement was measured using a 5-MHz convex transducer in a suprapubic position. Participants were asked to perform the isolated contraction of pelvic floor musculature (PFM) and transverse abdominis (TrA), cough at high lung volume and trun

Effects of hypopressive exercises on pelvic floor and abdominal muscles in adult women: A systematic review of randomized clinical trials.

INTRODUCTION: Hypopressive exercises (HE) are postural and breathing exercises that activate deep muscles in the abdomen and pelvic floor. Despite this, there is still no consensus in the literature on its real effectiveness. The objective was to analyze the effects of HE on the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles in women with or without dysfunctions in these regions. METHODS: This is a systematic review of randomized clinical trials found in the PEDro, PubMed, Cochrane, LILACS, and Embase databases. We include studies that evaluate the effects of HE (with or without other techniques) on the

Spinal cord location of the motoneurons innervating the abdominal, cutaneous maximus, latissimus dorsi and longissimus dorsi muscles in the cat.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injections were made in the rectus abdominis, obliquus externus, obliquus internus, transversus abdominis, cutaneous maximus, latissimus dorsi and the longissimus dorsi muscles in the cat. The results showed that motoneurons innervating the obliquus externus, obliquus internus and transversus abdominis muscles were located in greatly overlapping areas of midthoracic, caudal thoracic and upper lumbar spinal segments. These motoneuronal cell groups were present laterally in the ventral horn and at caudal thoracic and upper lumbar levels they bordered on the white mat

Innervated Muscle Transfer for Dynamic Abdominal Wall Reconstruction: Principles, Techniques, and Outcomes.

Abdominal wall defects (AWDs) represent a significant reconstructive challenge, necessitating restoration of both structural integrity and dynamic function. While static reconstruction can address structural deficits, it often fails to replicate the dynamic properties of the native abdominal wall musculature, potentially resulting in compromised core strength and increased hernia recurrence. This article reviews the principles and techniques of dynamic abdominal wall reconstruction utilizing innervated muscle transfer, emphasizing its advantages in restoring core strength, minimizing hernia re

Pre- and postnatal botulinum toxin abdominal wall muscle relaxation in hepato-omphalocele.

INTRODUCTION: Giant omphalocele poses a conflict between eviscerated content and abdominal capacity, with associated risks such as compartment syndrome or cardiovascular compromise. CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a prenatally diagnosed hepato-omphalocele, without associated abnormalities. At week 37, botulinum toxin was injected in the right hemiabdomen under fetal and maternal sedation. Following Cesarean section, scheduled at week 39, injection was completed in the left hemiabdomen, and full hepatic content reduction and total amnion inversion were achieved. The Association between Pelvic Asymmetry and Lateral Abdominal Muscle Activity in a Healthy Population.

The human pelvis is subjected to forces generated by abdominal muscles. Pelvic asymmetry (PA) might therefore be related to the asymmetrical postural activity of the lateral abdominal muscles (LAMs: transversus abdominis (TrA); internal oblique (IO); external oblique (EO)). The main aim of this study was to evaluate the potential relationship between PA, expressed by the asymmetry index in the frontal (PAIf) and sagittal (PAIs) planes and LAM postural activity as described by the tissue deformation index (TDI). A group of 126 healthy volunteers (59 females) was involved. Positions of the anato

Ultrasound-guided muscle dissection for lumboperitoneal shunting via lateral abdominal laparotomy.

Purpose;Lumboperitoneal shunting (LPS) is a common procedure for treating idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), involving two abdominal approaches:anterior abdominal laparotomy and lateral abdominal laparotomy (LAL). While LAL is advantageous in terms of infection risk, it presents challenges such as muscle manipulation and potential deviation from the desired trajectory. This report presents a novel technique that utilizes ultrasound examination of the lateral abdominal wall (UELAW) to visualize the three muscle layers (external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis)

PRDM16 deficiency in vascular smooth muscle cells aggravates abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is usually asymptomatic until life-threatening complications occur, predominantly involving aortic rupture. Currently, no drug-based treatments are available, primarily due to limited understanding of AAA pathogenesis. The transcriptional regulator PR domain-containing protein 16 (PRDM16) is highly expressed in the aorta, but its functions in the aorta are largely unknown. By RNA-seq analysis, we found that vascular smooth muscle cell-specific (VSMC-specific) Prdm16-knockout (Prdm16SMKO) mice already showed extensive changes in the expression of genes associated

Contained rupture of an inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysm into the iliopsoas muscle: report of a case.

A 72-year-old man with a history of old myocardial infarction was admitted to our hospital for surgical treatment of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. His hemodynamics was stable. He had left lumbar pain on moving his left leg and constipation for ten days without abdominal pain and high fever. Elevation of fat density around the aneurysm and ureter involvement were noted on the computed tomography. These characteristic image findings indicated inflammatory aortic aneurysm. During operation, an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm with an 8 cm maximum diameter was noted. This aneurysm was

Oblique abdominal muscle activity in response to external perturbations when pushing a cart.

Cyclic activation of the external and internal oblique muscles contributes to twisting moments during normal gait. During pushing while walking, it is not well understood how these muscles respond to presence of predictable (cyclic push-off forces) and unpredictable (external) perturbations that occur in pushing tasks. We hypothesized that the predictable perturbations due to the cyclic push-off forces would be associated with cyclic muscle activity, while external perturbations would be counteracted by cocontraction of the oblique abdominal muscles. Eight healthy male subjects pushed at two t

Endothelial and smooth muscle changes of the thoracic and abdominal aorta with various types of cryopreservation.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for cryopreserved arterial allografts in vascular surgery. Vitrification was examined as an alternative to slow cooling. Function of endothelial and adjacent cells was evaluated in the thoracic and abdominal regions of the porcine aorta. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Aortas from young pigs were harvested and cryopreserved with several treatments: slow cooling at 1 degrees C/min with 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and vitrification with a vitrification solution (VS), performed either in the presence (medium) or in the absence (air) of the cryoprotective medium surrounding th

Transneuronal tracing of neural pathways controlling an abdominal muscle, rectus abdominis, in the ferret.

Abdominal muscles participate in generating a large number of behaviors and reflex responses, including expiration, coughing, sneezing, vomiting, postural control, production of speech, straining, facilitation of venous return to the heart, and reaction to vestibular stimulation. However, the only premotor neurons that have been conclusively shown to influence abdominal motoneurons are located in nucleus retroambiguus, the expiratory region of the caudal ventral respiratory group. In the present study, the neural circuitry controlling the activity of one abdominal muscle, rectus abdominis, was

Abdominal muscle recruitment and PEEPi during bronchoconstriction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: It has been recently shown that, when breathing at rest, many patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) contract abdominal muscles during expiration, and that this contraction is an important determinant of positive end expiratory alveolar pressure (PEEPi). In this study the effects of acute bronchoconstriction on abdominal muscle recruitment in patients with severe COPD were studied, together with the consequence of abdominal muscle action on chest wall mechanics. METHODS: Breathing pattern, pleural (PPL) and gastric (PGA) pressures, and changes in abdomen

The prevention and repair of large abdominal-wall defects by muscle transposition: a preliminary communication.

Abdominal-wall defects, whether occurring as perioperative or postoperative phenomena, have been variously managed. Where the defect cannot be repaired by the use of the patient's own tissues, synthetic material is commonly utilized. Where both the preceding are unsuccessful, closure by means of muscles transferred from the thigh should be considered. Muscles have distinct advantages over fascial grafts or synthetic materials: they are dynamic structures that are effective in controlling herniae, may relieve symptoms in the case of symptomatic scoliosis resulting from the muscle loss, and may

Vagal afferents essential for abdominal muscle activity during lung inflation in cats.

Maintained inflation of the lung evokes abdominal muscle activity in anesthetized cats only if the vagus nerves are intact, indicating the importance of vagal receptors. The location of these receptors was determined in 14 anesthetized cats by comparing prevagotomy inflation responses of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm to the responses obtained after section of the thoracic vagi at one of three different levels. The abdominal muscle and diaphragm responses to maintained lung inflation persisted following vagotomy below the roots of the lung or denervation of the heart and great vessels. De
