A Presentation of Pediatric Sjögren's Syndrome with Abducens Nerve Palsy.

Sjögren's syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease that classically presents with xerophthalmia and xerostomia. However, neurological manifestations occur in 10 to 60% of patients with Sjögren's syndrome and can often precede classic sicca symptoms in Sjögren's syndrome in some cases up to several years. Rarely, cranial neuropathy can be the initial presentation. Here, we present the first case of a 15-year-old girl with left abducens palsy in the setting of a new diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome. Comprehensive evaluation revealed elevated Sjögren's syndrome-related antigen A-60 antibody. Cere

Ossification of the roof of the porus trigeminus with duplicated abducens nerve.

Ossification of parts of the intracranial dura mater is common and is generally accepted as an age-related finding. Additionally, duplication of the abducens nerve along its course to the lateral rectus muscle is a known, although uncommon anatomical variant. During routine cadaveric dissection, an ossified portion of dura mater traveling over the trigeminal nerve's entrance (porus trigeminus) into the middle cranial fossa was observed unilaterally. Ipsilaterally, a duplicated abducens nerve was also observed, with a unique foramen superolateral to the entrance of Dorello's canal. To our knowl

Isolated abducens nerve palsy in a patient with scrub typhus.

Abducens nerve palsies associated with infectious diseases are infrequent. Scrub typhus is an acute, febrile, infectious illness caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi (formerly Rickettsia tsutsugamushi), an obligate-intracellular gram-negative bacterium. The organism has been reported to be capable of entering the nervous system, causing meningitis and focal neurologic abnormalities. We report a case of isolated abducens nerve palsy associated with a scrub typhus infection.

Duplication of the abducens nerve at the petroclival region: an anatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: During its course between the brainstem and the lateral rectus muscle, the abducens nerve usually travels forward as a single trunk, but it is not uncommon for the nerve to split into two branches. The objective of this study was to establish the incidence and the clinical importance of the duplication of the nerve. METHODS: The study was performed on 100 sides of 50 autopsy materials. In 10 of 11 cases of duplicated abducens nerve, colored latex was injected into the common carotid arteries and the internal jugular veins. The remaining case was used for histological examination.

Outcome of abducens nerve paralysis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence, management and outcome of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who developed Vlth nerve palsy. METHODS: Between December 1993 and December 1999, we investigated retrospectively the charts of 166 patients with NPC. RESULTS: Twenty-eight of 166 patients (16.8%) had cranial nerve involvement at the time of the diagnosis of NPC. Sixteen (57.2%) were identified as having abducens nerve palsy. In 25% abducens nerve palsy was the presenting symptom. Three patients were able to compensate for their diplopia after prism co

In vitro classical conditioning of abducens nerve discharge in turtles.

In vitro classical conditioning of abducens nerve activity was performed using an isolated turtle brainstem-cerebellum preparation by direct stimulation of the cranial nerves. Using a delayed training procedure, the in vitro preparation was presented with paired stimuli consisting of a 1 sec train stimulus applied to the auditory nerve (CS), which immediately preceded a single shock US applied to the trigeminal nerve. Conditioned and unconditioned responses were recorded in the ipsilateral abducens nerve. Acquisition exhibited a positive slope of conditioned responding in 60% of the preparatio

Abducens nerve palsy in a girl with incomplete Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis that can involve the nervous system, including the cranial nerves. Central nervous system findings, especially irritability, lethargy, and aseptic meningitis, occur in 1-30 % of KD patients (1). Cranial nerve palsies are seen rarely, and abducens nerve palsy has been reported in only three children. We describe a 2.5-year-old girl with incomplete KD who developed transient abducens nerve palsy after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment.

A case of isolated abducens nerve paralysis in maxillofacial trauma.

Nervus abducens is a pure motor nerve located in the pons. It retracts the eyeball laterally by stimulating rectus lateralis muscle. In case of their paralysis, diplopia and restriction in the eye movements while looking sideways, are seen. Since the same signs are seen due to the muscle entrapment in blowout fractures, its differential diagnosis has importance in terms of the treatment protocol and avoiding unnecessary operations. In this article, we present a 22-year-old male patient who was referred to our department due to the prediagnosis of blowout fracture following maxillofacial trauma

Abducens nerve schwannoma: case report and review of the literature.

Schwannomas of the abducens nerve are extremely rare. The authors report a case with this tumor and discuss its clinical and radiographic characteristics. A 36-year-old man presented with 6-month history of diplopia. Right abducens nerve paresis was noted on neurologic examination. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 4-cm sized heterogeneously enhancing mass in the right cerebellopontine angle. Although schwannoma was suggested, no direct radiographic evidences regarding its origin were identified. Instead, the facial and vestibulocochlear nerve complex was found to be displaced posteriorly

Ophthalmoplegic migraine: a case with recurrent palsy of the abducens nerve.

Ophthalmoplegic migraine (OM) is a rare disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of migraine-like headaches associated with extrinsic ocular musculature palsy. In this article, we report a patient with OM that presented recurrent palsy of the abducens nerve and other atypical features. Case reports of OM with abducens nerve palsy were also reviewed.

Abducens nerve schwannoma: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Schwannomas of the abducens nerve are extremely rare tumors; only 10 cases have been reported so far. The tumor may be located within the cavernous sinus (CS) or more commonly at the prepontine region. Patients usually present with VIth cranial nerve paresis. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 42-year-old male patient who presented with headache, vertigo, and hearing deficit, but no symptoms or signs related to a VIth cranial nerve impairment. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large mass with a ring-like contrast enhancement in the prepontine area. S

Traumatic retroclival hematoma resulting in abducens nerve palsy: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic retroclival hematomas are rare pathologies among pediatric patients and can result in cranial nerve palsies. The authors sought to survey the literature and characterize the risk factors, treatment considerations, and overall outcomes for pediatric patients experiencing posttraumatic retroclival hematomas. OBSERVATIONS: A search of the Ovid Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases from January 1986 to May 2024 was performed following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Additionally, the authors report a novel cas

Orbital intraconal abducens nerve schwannoma: An interdisciplinary approach for management.

Schwannomas are rare benign tumors arising from Schwann cells of the nerve sheath. Although the head-and-neck region accounts for a large percentage of extracranial schwannomas, those located within the orbit are infrequent. This paper presents an extremely rare case of orbital schwannoma arising from the terminal branch of abducens nerve in a 37-year-old female. The lesion presented as a large intraconal mass causing proptosis and weakness to abduct the left eye. Imaging showed a well-defined, solid-cystic lesion, measuring 2.7 cm and displacing the lateral rectus muscle laterally and the opt
