Missed abortion (MA) is a special form of spontaneous abortion that is increasing in incidence. However, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying MA, especially regarding the decidua, are poorly understood. The changes in the serum level of selenium in cases with pathologic pregnancies are still not clear. The aim of the present study was to determine whether serum selenium in cases with missed abortion differed from selenium concentration in serum during first trimester of normal pregnancy. Transvaginal amniotic puncture (TAP) was performed on 20 consecutive missed abortions immediately prior to dilatation and evacuation and the cytogenetic results compared. The information received from products of conception (POC) and TAP was in concordance in only 5 of 20 (25%) cases. Tissue obtained from POC yielded cells in all instances. Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) was performed in 12 pregnant women (9-25 gestational weeks) with ultrasonographic evidence of missed abortion.
