Effect of hand hygiene intervention on the absenteeism of pre-school children in Klang Valley, Malaysia: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Absenteeism amongst pre-school children is often due to illnesses such as hand, foot, and mouth disease, acute gastroenteritis, cold and flu, which are easily spread amongst them. This is because of weak immunity and lack of knowledge on proper hand hygiene. This quasi-experimental study assessed the efficacy of an intervention consisting of a hand hygiene education programme, along with digital tools in bringing about a change in behaviour and health conditions amongst pre-school children in Klang Valley, Malaysia. METHODS: A total of 377 school children, male and female, aged 5-

Randomized trial of BCG in healthcare workers to reduce absenteeism during the COVID-19 pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: We tested whether providing BCG vaccine to healthcare workers (HCWs) could reduce non-planned absenteeism and thereby reduce the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare systems in Africa. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, single-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized trial in Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique between December 2020 and June 2022. Participants were randomized 1:1 to BCG vaccine or placebo (saline) and followed by biweekly telephone calls for 6 mo. The incidence of unplanned absenteeism due to illness was analyzed using Bayesian negative binomial regres

Presenteeism and Absenteeism Before and After Carpal Tunnel Release or Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Distal Radius Fracture.

PURPOSE: The use of a person's hands is crucial to their ability to succeed at work. Hand pathologies can impact work success by increasing absenteeism (ie, not being able to go to work) and presenteeism (ie, being able to work but in a reduced capacity). In this study, we quantified employed patients' presenteeism and absenteeism following carpal tunnel release or surgical fixation of a distal radius fracture (DRF). METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 91 patients (carpal tunnel syndrome [CTS]: n = 62; DRF: n = 29) from June 2022 to December 2023 were included. Baseline patient charact

School absenteeism as an adjunct surveillance indicator: experience during the second wave of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic in Quebec, Canada.

BACKGROUND: A school absenteeism surveillance system was implemented in the province of Quebec, Canada during the second wave of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. This paper compares this surveillance approach with other available indicators. METHOD: All (3432) elementary and high schools from Quebec were included. Each school was required to report through a web-based system any day where the proportion of students absent for influenza-like illness (ILI) exceeded 10% of current school enrolment. RESULTS: Between October 18 and December 12 2009, 35.6% of all schools met the 10% absenteeism threshold.

The relationship of mean daily blood alcohol levels to admission MAST, clinic absenteeism and depression in alcoholic methadone patients.

Alcoholism is a prevalent problem encountered during the methadone treatment of opioid dependence. The unique feature of examining alcoholism in methadone clinics is the ability to objectively measure alcohol consumption on a frequent basis. The present study examined how blood alcohol level (BAL) relates to clinic absenteeism and whether any paper and pencil tests predict BAL in alcoholic methadone patients. Thirty-eight alcoholic methadone patients receiving outpatient treatment had their BALs assessed over consecutive 5-day periods for a period of 2 months. The relationship of these BALs to

Functional Limitations and Illness-Related Absenteeism among School-Aged Children with and without Long COVID, United States, 2022-2023.

We examined functional limitations and illness-related chronic absenteeism (i.e., missing >18 days of school for health reasons) in a cross-sectional nationally representative sample of 11,057 US children 5-17 years of age who ever or never had long COVID (i.e., symptoms lasting >3 months after COVID-19 illness). Among 4,587 children with prior COVID-19, we estimated whether long COVID was associated with increased illness-related chronic absenteeism by using logistic regression. Our analysis showed that ≈1.4% of school-aged children had long COVID at some point. Among children with prior COVI

Factors Associated with the Odds, Duration, and Costs of Health-Related Absenteeism: A Population-Based Study in São Paulo City, Brazil.

Background/Objectives: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) impose a substantial socioeconomic burden on health systems through direct costs and indirect costs from productivity loss due to health-related absenteeism. While lifestyle factors are crucial for NCD prevention, evidence regarding their association with absenteeism in middle-income countries, such as Brazil, remains limited. In this context, the present study aims to analyze factors associated with the odds, duration, and costs of health-related absenteeism in São Paulo City, Brazil. Methods: Quantitative analysis was performed using mic

The association of fitness and school absenteeism across gender and poverty: a prospective multilevel analysis in New York City middle schools.

PURPOSE: One-fifth to one-third of students in high poverty, urban school districts do not attend school regularly (missing ≥6 days/year). Fitness is shown to be associated with absenteeism, although this relationship may differ across poverty and gender subgroups. METHODS: Six cohorts of New York City public school students were followed up from grades 5 to 8 during 2006/2007-2012/2013 (n = 349,381). Stratified three-level longitudinal generalized linear mixed models were used to test the association between changes in fitness and 1-year lagged child-specific days absent across gender and po

Sickness absenteeism is associated with sleep problems independent of sleep disorders: results of the 2016 Sleep Health Foundation national survey.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disorders are associated with sickness absenteeism (SA), at significant economic cost. Correlates of absenteeism are less well described in nonclinical samples. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: We determined the relationship between markers of inadequate sleep and SA in a sample of 551 working adults aged ≥18 years across Australia. We considered diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and insomnia symptoms, daytime symptoms, and sleepiness with respect to sickness absenteeism (missing ≥1 day of work in the past 28 days because of problems with physical or mental health). School absenteeism linked to PM2.5 and SO2 exposure in students with asthma from environmental justice areas with elevated AQI risk.

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of air quality (PM2.5, SO2, O3, and NO2) on daily school absenteeism rates in students with and without asthma in an underserved community with elevated exposure risk. This retrospective study analyzed daily attendance and OAP exposure data from 2015/16 to 2017/18 in an environmental justice area located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For students with asthma, both long-term (28-day) and short-term (previous day) exposure to these PM2.5 levels 10.0-12.0 μg/m3 significantly increased absenteeism compared to days with levels below 10 μg/m3 (
