Although a substantial amount of social science research has examined the consequences of various life events, much less has been done to examine how the effect may be unevenly distributed. The present research takes children's experiences of parents' marital disruption as an example and demonstrates how a contaminated-distribution model may simulate a scenario in which the effect of parents' marital disruption on children's academic performance is unevenly distributed. Using test performance data from a nationally representative sample of 10,045 American adolescents, the study partitions the

Congenital heart disease (CHD) can lead to neurodevelopmental impairments and increased need for routine healthcare visits, potentially leading to deficits in academic performance. Children with CHD may also experience health-related discrimination in school and clinical settings. To determine the association of health-related discrimination (independent of bullying) with academic performance and school absenteeism among children with CHD. We analyzed data on schoolchildren with CHD from the 2022-2023 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). Our primary exposure was health-related discrimi

English Learners (ELs), students from non-English-speaking backgrounds, are a fast-growing, understudied, group of students in the U.S. with unique learning challenges. Cognitive flexibility-the ability to switch between task demands with ease-may be an important factor in learning for ELs as they have to manage learning in their non-dominant language and access knowledge in multiple languages. We used functional MRI to measure cognitive flexibility brain activity in a group of Hispanic middle school ELs (N = 63) and related it to their academic skills. We found that brain engagement during th

The objective of this study was to investigate associations between indoor air quality (IAQ) in K-12 classrooms and student academic performance. During the academic years 2015-2017, various IAQ factors in 220 classrooms in the US were measured seasonally, excluding summer. Measurements were taken during occupied and unoccupied times in several classrooms within each school. Occupied measurements included indoor carbon dioxide (CO2) and formaldehyde concentrations, and fine and coarse particle counts. Unoccupied measurements consisted of ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2)

Associations between Hormonal Contraception (HC) and Depression have been previously reported, and indicate increased risk to younger women. These relationships need be explored and expanded to include measures of impact on Academic Performance (AP). Data was acquired from the National College Health Assessment (NCHA), administered from Fall 2008 to Spring 2015 across 370 schools nationwide. The most popular HC method was oral, followed by an IUD, and vaginal ring. HC use increased across all ages groups 18-29, and then decreased in the 30-34 age group. HC use significantly increased the odds

BACKGROUND: Formal systems of peer teaching are common in many advanced-degree graduate school programs but are less prevalent in medical schools. In 1997, The Medical University of South Carolina's Center for Academic Excellence created a Supplemental Instructor (SI) program in which interested upper-level medical students are hired to teach a small group of junior peers, primarily in basic science topics.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine if participation as an SI leader resulted inmeasurable academic improvement for those students. This study examined if participation as a

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents are embedded in digital environments that are increasingly central to social, academic, and emotional life. Yet the developmental implications of digital engagement remain contested, particularly when exposure metrics such as screen time are used as primary indicators. The present study examined digital engagement as a multidimensional construct while treating regulatory difficulty-the dimension most directly reflecting impaired control and difficulty disengaging-as the focal predictor of aggression, achievement motivation, and objectively measured academic performanc

UNLABELLED: This study explored the association between social jetlag and academic performance among adolescents in Spain, a country with structural circadian misalignment. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 788 adolescents (55% female, 12-17 years) from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study in the Valle de Ricote, Spain. Social jetlag was calculated as the absolute difference between usual weekend and weekday bedtimes (primary exposure), derived from self-reported school and weekend sleep/wake times. Academic performance was assessed via official school records

This study investigates the relationship between the educational level of village heads and the academic performance of adolescents, using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The analysis reveals that village chiefs with well-educated significantly enhance the academic outcomes of adolescents within their communities. This positive effect remains robust even after controlling for endogeneity through instrumental variables and conducting various robustness checks. Further investigation shows that these well-educated village leaders contribute to an increased provision of public goo

BACKGROUND: Whether graduate entrants to medical school perform better academically than undergraduate entrants remains controversial. Differences in the discipline backgrounds of graduates may, at least in part, have accounted for differences in the results of comparative studies reported to date. This study aimed to address the dual issues of whether academic performance and progression rates were different between GE and UG students and the extent to which the discipline background of GE students may underpin any differences observed.
METHODS: Relative academic performance as well as indic

BACKGROUND: School administrators and teachers face difficult decisions about how best to use school resources to meet academic achievement goals. Many are hesitant to adopt prevention curricula that are not focused directly on academic achievement. Yet, some have hypothesized that prevention curricula can remove barriers to learning and, thus, promote achievement. We examined relationships among school levels of student substance use and risk and protective factors that predict adolescent problem behaviors and achievement test performance.
METHODS: Hierarchical generalized linear models were
