Badgers can gather huge quantities of organic material to build their nests for winter time and to rear their cubs. Moreover, badger burrows (setts) are characterized by specific microclimate with quite stable temperature and humidity. Their fauna is poorly studied, especially in respect of saprobiontic Uropodina mites. In 2018-2019, we monitored 94 badger setts to search for nest material that had been thrown away during cleaning of the chambers after mating and winter sleep. In the collected material from 32 badger nests, we found 413 Uropodina mites of 16 species, in various stages of devel

Several bacteria belonging to the genus Rickettsia are recognized as causal agents of diseases in domestic and wild animals and humans. These bacteria are considered emerging or reemerging and are transmitted by ticks, fleas, and lice vectors. In recent decades, there have been reports of rickettsias in ticks of the genus Amblyomma, Ixodes, and Haemaphysalis collected from wild birds. Accordingly, birds play a plausible role in the transport and spread of ticks infected by Rickettsia spp. In this study, we performed molecular detection of Rickettsia species in ticks collected from wild birds i

Seasonal bird (Aves) migration between breeding and wintering areas, often located on different continents, can facilitate the spreading of tick species (Acari: Ixodida) and of tick-borne pathogens. The aim of the study was to analyse the occurrence of ticks dispersed by birds migrating along the Polish Baltic coast during spring and autumn migration. Field research was conducted at the bird ringing station in Wicie, located on the middle of the Polish Baltic coast, in 2011 and 2012 during spring and autumn migration. A total of 2657 birds from 45 species was examined. The most common species

Chigger mites are parasites of rodents and other vertebrates, invertebrates, and other arthropods, and are the only vectors of scrub typhus, in addition to other zoonoses. Therefore, investigating their distribution, diversity, and seasonal abundance is important for public health. Rodent surveillance was conducted at 6 districts in Shandong Province, northern China (114-112°E, 34-38°N), from January to December 2011. Overall, 225/286 (78.7%) rodents captured were infested with chigger mites. A total of 451 chigger mites were identified as belonging to 5 most commonly collected species and 3 g

This study performed the ultrastructural description of the synganglion of Rhipicephalus sanguineus males and females, aiming to contribute to the understanding of the cellular organization of this organ. The results show that the central nervous system of these individuals consists of a mass of fused nerves, named synganglion, from where nerves emerge towards several parts of the body. It is surrounded by the neural lamella, a uniform and acellular layer, constituted by repeated layers of homogeneous and finely granular material. The perineurium is just below, composed of glial cells, which e

In this study 1,868 questing Ixodes ricinus ticks (nymphs and adults), collected in six sites from three counties--Giurgiu, Sibiu, and Tulcea--in Romania, were examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by reverse line blot (RLB) for detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato presence. The bacteria were found in 18% of the investigated ticks. The prevalence of infection did not differ significantly between nymphs (19.1%) and adults (15.4%). Three B. burgdorferi s.l. genospecies were detected: B. afzelii (61.1%), B. garinii (31.2%), and B. valaisiana (7.7%). No mixed infections were

Ornithodoros hermsi Wheeler (Acari: Argasidae) is the vector of Borrelia hermsii, the primary cause of tick-borne relapsing fever in North America. This tick is one of the smallest Ornithodoros species involved with the biological transmission of spirochetes; yet, the amount of blood ingested while feeding is unknown. Therefore, we determined the amount of blood O. hermsi ingested during a bloodmeal to establish its potential for spirochete acquisition while feeding on an infected host. Ticks at different developmental stages were weighed before and after feeding and the volume of blood ingest

Laboratory animals exposed to feeding ticks develop resistance which is reflected by a decline in tick engorgement weight, egg-laying by adults and reduced egg viability. Serum antibodies from these hosts and their reaction with tick antigens have been detected by different methods, including precipitation techniques, immunofluorescent techniques, ELISA and Western blots. However, little is known about the effects of antibodies on ticks that engorge on resistant hosts, or which tissues of the tick body are possibly immunogenic. Some researchers, using immunohistochemistry, have detected host a

Lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (L.), were processed by standard histological means for paraffin embedding, sectioning, and staining by the paraldehyde-fuchsin technique. The synganglion is highly condensed around the esophagus and possesses paired optic, cheliceral, palpal, pedal I-IV nerves, and opisthosomal nerves and a single unpaired esophageal nerve. Although optic nerves were observed leading from the eyes to the protocerebrum, distinct optic ganglia were not seen in any of the preparations examined. The paraldehyde-fuchsin technique revealed 14 neurosecretory centers (11 paired,

Information was requested on the cause of extensive lesions and death of a blackbuck antelope (Antilope cervicapra). Psoroptes cuniculi, the ear mite of domestic rabbits, was identified as the cause of the lesions. Death of the antelope was attributed to a secondary bacterial infection. This is the first report of P. cuniculi on blackbuck antelope. The potential impact of these mites on blackbuck antelope and other exotics in Texas is unknown.

Incidence of tickborne diseases is increasing in the United States, with nearly half a million cases estimated to occur annually. The rising burden of tickborne disease in the United States underscores the need to investigate the presence and prevalence of tick species and associated pathogens. Southern Florida serves as an introductory point for non-native invasive reptiles, amphibians, and ectoparasites due to the region's international ports and tropical climate. At Zoo Miami, visitors are near exhibit animals and free-living invasive species, including cane toads and green iguanas. This st

Neoseiulus barkeri is an important predatory mite used for biological control in citrus orchards in China. Systematic studies on the toxicity of commonly used pesticides to predatory mites are rarely reported. In this study, we developed a "four-well volcanic dish" bioassay system to determine the acute contact toxicity of 33 pesticides registered in citrus, and further evaluated the sublethal effects of chlorpyrifos, lambda-cyhalothrin, and chlorfenapyr at LC10 and LC20 on the development and reproduction of N. barkeri. Amitraz was the most toxic compound, with an LC50 of 55.92 mg/L. Chlorpyr

The tropical horse tick, Dermacentor nitens Neumann, 1897, has a wide distribution throughout the Neotropics, and is a vector of protozoan haemoparasites that cause equine piroplasmosis. Despite this, little is known about the genetic diversity of this tick species, particularly in Cuba, where horses are important domestic animals used in agriculture and for transportation. The objective of this study was to assess the magnitude of genetic variation in 115 D. nitens adults (57 females and 58 males) collected from horses in the Cuban province of Mayabeque using sequence data of two mitochondria

Larvae of trombiculid mites (Acari: Trombiculidae), known as chiggers, are ectoparasites that parasitize various animals and transmit pathogens such as Orientia tsutsugamushi. We report the first record of chigger mites in the Ogasawara Islands, collected from Bonin Greenfinch Chloris kittlitzi and Warbling White-eyes Zosterops japonicus. By morphological and molecular analysis, the chiggers were identified to the genus Toritrombicula which predominantly parasitize avian hosts. Although the mites could not be identified to the species level, this finding provides new insight into the distribut

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a tick-borne infection caused by Rickettsia rickettsii Brumpt, which is included in the spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses. In the United States, RMSF is transmitted primarily by ticks in the genus Dermacentor and in parts of Arizona and northern Mexico, by Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille. SFG rickettsiosis cases have been reported throughout the United States, but between 2018 and 2022, 5 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Tennessee) accounted for over 50% of SFG rickettsiosis cases. The most virulent of the spotted fever gr

A large number of tick species are proven vectors for the transmission of bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. Soft ticks (Acari: Argasidae) in South America have been found to be the most frequent carriers of borreliae of the relapsing fever group (RFG); however, there are several information gaps specially on the taxonomy and distribution of some tick species. Here, we used light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and PCR amplification of a fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene to evaluate 174 larvae of Ornithodoros (Argasidae) collected from three bat species (Eptesicus orinocensis

Ixodid ticks (Acarina, Ixodidae) are vectors of dangerous human infections. The main tick species that determine the epidemiological situation for tick-borne diseases in northern Europe are Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus. In recent years, significant changes in the number and distribution of these species have been observed, accompanied by an expansion of the sympatric range. This work summarizes the data of long-term studies carried out in Karelia since 2007 on the infection of I. persulcatus and I. ricinus ticks with various pathogens, including new viruses with unclear pathogenic pot

Active surveillance was conducted by collecting questing ticks from vegetation through a 2-yr survey in Pike County, Pennsylvania. Over a thousand blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis Say) and American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis Say) were collected. A single specimen of the following species was collected: lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum L.), rabbit tick (Haemaphysalis leporispalustris Packard), and an Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann). This study represents the largest county-wide study in Pennsylvania, surveying 988 questing I. scapularis adult and nymphs.
