Awareness and access to mass media sources of information about modern family planning methods among women with disabilities in Nigeria: An analysis of 2018 demographic and health survey.

BACKGROUND: Family planning is the foundation of sexual and reproductive health, and necessary for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Yet, the needs of women with disabilities and their access to these services have been neglected for decades, especially in Low and Middle-income Countries. To improve utilization of these services among women with disabilities, they have to be aware and informed about the services. This study was conducted to examine awareness and mass media sources of information on family planning between women with and without disabilities. METHODS: This study use

HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of persons with and without disabilities from the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey 2011: Differential access to HIV/AIDS information and services.

Uganda is among the first to use the Washington Group Short Set of Questions on Disability to identify persons with disabilities in its Demographic and Health Survey. In this paper, we review the HIV Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour component of the 2011 Ugandan Demographic and Health Survey, analysing a series of questions comparing those with and without disabilities in relation to HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and practices. We found comparable levels of knowledge on HIV/AIDS for those with and those without disabilities in relation to HIV transmission during delivery (93.89%, 93.26%) and

Differences in walking access to healthcare facilities between formal and informal areas in 19 sub-Saharan African cities.

BACKGROUND: Spatial accessibility to healthcare is a critical factor in ensuring equitable health outcomes. While studies on a global, continental, and national level exist, our understanding of intra-urban differences, particularly between formal and informal areas within cities in sub-Saharan Africa, remains limited. METHODS: This study integrates openly available datasets on land use in 19 sub-Saharan cities, healthcare facilities in the region, and street networks from OpenStreetMap. Using these datasets, we calculate service areas around hospitals, considering travel times ranging from 1

Midlife Women's Menopausal Transition Symptom Experience and Access to Medical and Integrative Health Care: Informing the Development of MENOGAP.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a uterus experience menopause, the cessation of menses, on average at age 51 years in the United States. While menopause is a natural occurrence for most, over 85% of women experience multiple interfering symptoms. Menopausal women face health disparities, including a lack of access to high-quality healthcare and greater disparities are experienced by women who are black, indigenous, and people of color. Some women are turning away from hormone therapy, and some seek integrative health interventions. OBJECTIVE: Some menopausal women who seek healthcare do not rece

Expressive Writing About One's Trauma Increases Accessibility of Cannabis Information in Memory Among Trauma-Exposed Individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma survivors are more likely than others to use cannabis, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) commonly co-occurs with cannabis use disorder (CUD). Automatic memory associations between trauma reminders and cannabis use have been suggested as contributing mechanisms. These associations can be studied experimentally by manipulating trauma cue exposure in a cue-reactivity paradigm (CRP) and examining effects on the accessibility of cannabis information in memory in trauma survivors with and without PTSD. METHOD: Cannabis users with trauma histories (N = 202) completed a PTSD

Need for informed providers: exploring LA-PrEP access in focus groups with PrEP-indicated communities in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: The approval of long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis PrEP (LA-PrEP) in the United States brings opportunities to overcome barriers of oral PrEP, particularly among sexual and gender minority communities who bear a higher HIV burden. Little is known about real-time decision-making among potential PrEP users of LA-PrEP post-licensure. METHODS: We held focus group discussions with people assigned male at birth who have sex with men in Baltimore, Maryland to explore decision-making, values, and priorities surrounding PrEP usage. A sexual and gender minority-affirming health center tha

Trauma-informed co-production: Collaborating and combining expertise to improve access to primary care with women with complex needs.

INTRODUCTION: Health, social care, charitable and justice sectors are increasingly recognising the need for trauma-informed services that seek to recognise signs of trauma, provide appropriate paths to recovery and ensure that services enable people rather than retraumatise. Foundational to the development of trauma-informed services is collaboration with people with lived experience of trauma. Co-production principles may provide a useful framework for this collaboration, due to their emphasis on lived experience, and intent to address power imbalances and promote equity. This article aims to

Invisible patients: Reframing women informal caregivers' access to healthcare and support services as a gendered health systems issue.

Women informal caregivers are overrepresented in unpaid and informal caregiving roles yet remain underrecognized as patients and policy subjects within health and social care systems. Despite extensive evidence that caregiving affects women's own health and healthcare engagement, their access barriers are frequently attributed to individual help-seeking behaviors rather than to systemic and gendered conditions. This conceptual paper argues that women informal caregivers' access to healthcare and support services should be understood as a gendered health systems issue shaped by sociocultural ex

Mobility-informed hospital siting for accessible and lower-carbon healthcare travel: an ensemble learning study in Tianjin, China.

Healthcare facility layouts shape access to care, travel burdens, and travel-related carbon emissions. Conventional siting assessments, however, often rely on supply-side indicators without accounting for how patients actually travel. This study examined nine tertiary Grade-A hospitals in central Tianjin using 2,596 questionnaires from hospital visitors and spatial data on road networks, bus and metro stations, expressways, and points of interest. Six spatial and transport indicators were evaluated: surveyed medical-visitor density, regional service coverage, transport accessibility, distance

Closing the equity gap in access to early lung cancer diagnosis in Aotearoa: key informant perspectives and recommendations for action.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer survival is worse for Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) than non-Māori. Our previous work identified that Māori are more likely to have their lung cancer diagnosed following an emergency presentation and face additional barriers in accessing secondary diagnostic services. AIM: To inform improvements in lung cancer services, we aimed to collect key informant views on the extent to which these disparities were modifiable and how they might be modified by the healthcare system. METHODS: We interviewed 18 key informants from across the cancer sector, including clinicia

A novel sheath system to improve target access for preoperative mapping biopsy: A randomized trial to inform surgical planning.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of biliary tract cancer spread is important for appropriate surgery. However, conventional fluoroscopy-guided transpapillary biopsy often fails to reach intrahepatic bile ducts. This study evaluated a novel tapered-tip sheath system (SS) for preoperative mapping biopsy (MB). METHODS: In this single-center randomized trial, 90 patients with suspected malignant bile duct stenosis were assigned 1:1 to SS or conventional biopsy; crossover after technical failure was allowed. The primary outcome was MB success (intention-to-treat [ITT]). MB success was defined as ob

Open access, "piracy" and Article Processing Charges (APC) in Argentina: an informed policy for the national research funding agency.

The article explores the growing influence of Article Processing Charges (APCs) in academic publishing, especially in Argentina, and the challenges they pose for non-hegemonic countries. It highlights the shift from traditional subscription models to open access models, driven by commercial publishers, which often impose significant financial burdens on researchers and institutions. The study aims to examine the issues arising from these models, particularly the commercial open access system, to describes the actions developed by the National Agency for the promotion of Research, Technological

Accessible Patient Education Materials for Low Back Pain Rarely Meet People's Information Needs: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Patient education is a cornerstone of care for individuals with non-specific low back pain (LBP). However, little is known about whether accessible patient education materials (PEMs) meet people's information needs. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the JBI methodology and reported results according to PRISMA-ScR. We systematically reviewed three databases: Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, and CINAHL. The search strategy was iteratively developed and peer-reviewed using the PRESS checklist. Eligible studies had to provide full access to the PEM designed for people with LBP. St

Optimizing nation-wide locations of dialysis centers: a geographic information system-based approach to improve healthcare accessibility and availability.

BACKGROUND: Accessibility and availability are critical components of quality healthcare, particularly for dialysis patients requiring tri-weekly treatments. Inconveniently placed or oversubscribed dialysis centers contribute to widening healthcare disparities. This study aims to enhance equity in dialysis care by utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to optimize facility placement through data-driven decision-making. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed national data from 5,961 hemodialysis patients across 76 dialysis centers in Israel. Geographic accessibility was assessed
