Chlorine gas induced acute respiratory distress syndrome due to pool shock.

Chlorine gas is a known pulmonary irritant with potential to cause significant lung injury. Most severe cases stem from industrial accidents or chemical warfare, and while exposure is common with chlorinated household cleaners, life threatening events are rare. A 75-year-old male developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) following an accidental chlorine exposure after mixing calcium hypochlorite powder with water in his sink, triggering an explosion with chlorine gas release. He rapidly developed bronchospasm, pulmonary edema and respiratory failure within hours of exposure, in addi

Spontaneous Multiple Haematomas in a Patient with Severe COVID-19 Fully Recovered with a Conservative Approach.

A significant number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 are prone to thromboembolic events including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, cerebrovascular accident, and myocardial infarction. However, some COVID-19 patients have a higher risk of bleeding that is associated with an increased risk of mortality. We report a 71-year-old woman who was a confirmed case of COVID-19 admitted for pulmonary involvement and complicated acute renal failure. During hospitalization, she suffered from a sudden onset of severe pain in the lower left abdomen as well as a sudden drop in blood pressure a

The Psychology of Scars: A Mini-Review.

Scars can result from a range of causes: accidents, surgery, and even acne. The resultant change in appearance can negatively affect body image and self-confidence. Scarring is stigmatised in society because of the premium placed on beauty - disfigurement or unsightly features are still used to portray evil in horror films, comic strips, and fairy tales. Patients describe scars as living with the trauma and sufferers can feel devalued by society. Scars are inflexible and cause functional impairment which may prompt a change in career and have financial repercussions. Those with scars undergo a

Rehabilitation of Avulsed Teeth in Fractured Jaws via Bone Grafting and Implant Placement: Report of Two Cases.

The maxillofacial region is one of the most injury-prone areas during road traffic accidents, personal violence, falls and sports. Maxillofacial trauma can lead to breakage or avulsion of upper anterior teeth, which may cause significant aesthetic and functional problems. There are many treatment options available for rehabilitation including removable partial dentures, fixed partial dentures, crown and bridges and implant-supported prostheses. Herein, two cases are presented where implant placement was done for upper anterior teeth, which were traumatized or avulsed following maxillofacial tr

Trauma and adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

This study investigated the relationship between adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and trauma. Fifty-eight adults admitted to hospital with musculoskeletal trauma were evaluated using scales that determine the presence of ADHD in childhood and adulthood. Each patient was also interviewed by an adult psychiatrist and a child and adolescent psychiatrist. The control group consisted of 30 adult patients with complaints other than trauma who did not have a history of repetitive traumas. There were 36 (62.2%) cases of ADHD in the patient group compared with four (13.3%) in the c

[Delayed and fortuitous diagnosis of right diaphragmatic rupture during preoperative evaluation].

Although diaphragmatic rupture occurs after violent blunt trauma, its diagnosis is often delayed. The intra-thoracic displacement of abdominal organs through diaphragmatic rupture may lead to early or delayed complications because of compression of heart and lungs or strangulation of the abdominal viscera. A 49-year-old woman was scheduled to undergo elective lumbar disc surgery in prone position. The preoperative chest radiograph revealed an abnormally elevated right hemi diaphragm with loops of colon filling the right costophrenic angle. The CT-scan confirmed right chronic diaphragmatic rupt

[Driver's license, driving habits and traffic safety of patients with diabetes mellitus].

Motoring practices of diabetic drivers are similar to those of the average driving population. Due to the sudden onset of disabling hypoglycemia and the long-term complications of the disease, particularly retinopathy, one might assume that diabetic drivers are more prone to road traffic accidents than the average driver; however, the risk is not increased. The Council of the European Union recently laid down guidelines for dealing with this problem, which will lead to the introduction of a new law in Austria governing driving licensing. This legislation is currently under consideration. We re

Lessons learnt from two pediatric motor vehicle accidents resulting in anal canal, rectal and gluteal muscle wrenching.

Ano-rectal trauma is common in motor vehicle accidents involving children. Inadequate initial assessment of the extent of lesions may be life threatening. We describe two cases where children were struck by buses that subsequently rolled over them in the prone position, resulting in ano-rectal and gluteal muscle wrenching. The first patient was inadequately assessed. Initial management did not include a diverting stoma, leading to life-threatening necrosis and septic shock. The second benefitted from our previous experience and recovery was uneventful. The distinctive mechanism of trauma in tr

Variable Classification of Drug-Intoxication Suicides across US States: A Partial Artifact of Forensics?

BACKGROUND: The 21st-century epidemic of pharmaceutical and other drug-intoxication deaths in the United States (US) has likely precipitated an increase in misclassified, undercounted suicides. Drug-intoxication suicides are highly prone to be misclassified as accident or undetermined. Misclassification adversely impacts suicide and other injury mortality surveillance, etiologic understanding, prevention, and hence clinical and public health policy formation and practice. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether observed variation in the relative magnitude of drug-intoxication suicides across US states

Epidemiology of spinal cord injury.

Accidents are the cause of some 50 deaths per 100 000 population each year in the US; some 3% of these are from traumatic spinal cord injury alone. Traumatic spinal cord injury in socioeconomically advanced countries, has a probably annual incidence rate of 3 per 100 000 population. Males are affected five times as often as females, and in the US, Negroes have twice the rates of whites. Half the cases are due to motor vehicle accidents, 1/4 to falls, and 1/10 to sports injuries. Maximal ages at risk are 15 to 34; only for cord damage due to falls do this risk differ, and here elderly are the m
