Blood folate concentrations among women of childbearing age by race/ethnicity and acculturation, NHANES 2001-2010.

Hispanic women have higher rates of neural tube defects and report lower total folic acid intakes than non-Hispanic white (NHW) women. Total folic acid intake, which is associated with neural tube defect risk reduction, has been found to vary by acculturation factors (i.e. language preference, country of origin, or time spent in the United States) among Hispanic women. It is unknown whether this same association is present for blood folate status. The objective of this research was to assess the differences in serum and red blood cell (RBC) folate concentrations between NHW women and Mexican A

Acculturation and post-disaster mental health problems among affected and non-affected immigrants: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown to what extent acculturation among disaster-affected immigrants is associated with mental health problems (MHP) compared to non-affected immigrants. METHODS: We examined the associations between acculturation and post-disaster MHP among affected and non-affected immigrants in The Netherlands. RESULTS: Among the affected group, keeping norms and values of original culture and limited skills to cope with the demands of the new society were independently associated with PTSD-symptomatology, anxiety, depression, hostility, and somatic problems at 18 months post-event. Acculturation, gender, depression, and cigarette smoking among U.S. Hispanic youth: the mediating role of perceived discrimination.

Hispanic youth are at risk for experiencing depressive symptoms and smoking cigarettes, and risk for depressive symptoms and cigarette use increase as Hispanic youth acculturate to U.S. culture. The mechanism by which acculturation leads to symptoms of depression and cigarette smoking is not well understood. The present study examined whether perceived discrimination explained the associations of acculturation with depressive symptoms and cigarette smoking among 1,124 Hispanic youth (54% female). Youth in Southern California completed surveys in 9th-11th grade. Separate analyses by gender show

Acculturation and diabetes among Hispanics: evidence from the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Hispanic individuals in the United States have a greater prevalence of diabetes mellitus than non-Hispanic white individuals; however, it is unclear whether Hispanics' risk of diabetes differs based on their level of acculturation. The purpose of our research was to examine acculturation among Hispanic Americans with respect to prevalence and control of diabetes. METHODS: We conducted an analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1999-2002, a nationally representative sample of the noninstitutionalized U.S. population. We evaluated data on Hispanic a

Dispositional optimism, pessimism, and psychological distress among Venezuelan migrants in Chile: The role of acculturative stress.

INTRODUCTION: Migrants often experience mental health challenges associated with acculturative stress. Dispositional traits, such as optimism and pessimism, may shape how individuals appraise and cope with these challenges, influencing their psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the role of three dimensions of acculturative stress: integration difficulties, nostalgia, and structural barriers, in the relationship between optimism, pessimism and mental health symptoms among Venezuelan migrants living in Chile. METHOD: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 22

Reconstructing professional identity under acculturative stress: A longitudinal case study of a transnational language teacher.

As global teacher mobility increases, transnational educators often encounter acculturative stress and challenges to their professional identity. However, the psychological processes through which adaptation unfolds over time remain underexplored. Drawing on Ecological Systems Theory and the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, this study examines intercultural adaptation as a dynamic process shaped by changing environmental demands, cognitive appraisals, and coping responses. Using a longitudinal phenomenological case study design, the study followed an Asian English language teacher ove

Acculturation stress and mental health outcomes in a sample of migrant inpatients: Findings from a naturalistic study.

INTRODUCTION: Migrants face numerous risk factors for mental disorders, including stressors and traumatic events during the pre-, peri-, and post-migratory phases. Acculturation stress, a significant post-migratory stressor, can adversely affect mental health during the cultural adaptation process. This study aims to assess the clinical implications of acculturation stress in migrants admitted to a psychiatric intensive care unit, with a focus on identifying predictors of acculturative stress and their impact on clinical outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 268 immigrant p

Hispanic ethnicity and acculturation, maternal age and the risk of gastroschisis in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

UNLABELLED: Studies indicate that gastroschisis is associated with maternal age, ethnicity, and acculturation. This analysis was conducted to further define the associations between gastroschisis and parental Hispanic ethnicity and acculturation, and to determine whether such associations vary by maternal age. METHODS: This study was based on data from mothers of 753 gastroschisis cases and 6,496 control infants in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. The relationships between gastroschisis and both parental Hispanic ethnicity and acculturation, within maternal age strata (<20 versus

Pressure to Acculturate Amplifies Coping-Depression Associations With Alcohol Consequences in Hispanic/Latino College Students.

BACKGROUND: Hispanic/Latino American college students report elevated rates of alcohol use and negative alcohol-related consequences compared to non-Hispanic/Latino white students. As cultural experiences and coping motives (i.e., drinking to manage negative emotions) can influence alcohol outcomes in Hispanic/Latino Americans, the current study examined how the interplay of acculturative stress and coping motives are related to alcohol use and negative alcohol-related consequences among Hispanic/Latino American college students. METHOD: A large, multisite sample of Hispanic/Latino American c

Food insecurity, acculturation and diagnosis of CHD and related health outcomes among immigrant adults in the USA.

OBJECTIVE: To deepen understanding of the relationship between food insecurity, acculturation, and diagnosis of CHD and related health outcomes among immigrant adults. DESIGN: Using cross-sectional, nationally representative data from the National Health Interview Survey 2011 to 2015, we address two research questions. First, what is the relationship of household food insecurity and acculturation with: CHD, angina pectoris, heart attack, self-rated poor health and obesity? Second, what is the association of food insecurity with these health outcomes over years of living in the USA? We estimat

The Association Between Acculturation and Parental Feeding Practices in Families With Overweight and Obese Hispanic/Latino Children.

This study examines the association between acculturation and parental feeding practices in low-income Latinos. Overweight/obese children (N = 117), aged 5 to 14 years, and their parents were recruited from a rural health clinic. Findings show that more acculturated parents have greater control over their child's eating behavior (P = .04). Parents who perceive their child as having a weight problem also have more control over their child's eating behavior (P = .02). Control measured from regulation of how much and when the child should eat to offering sweets and screen time for good behavior.

Acculturation as a Moderator of HIV Risk Behavior Correlates Among Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Acculturation is associated with increased sexual risk behaviors among heterosexual Latinos, but its influence among Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) remains less clear. Elements of acculturation may create distinct lived experiences among sexual minority Latinos, moderating how beneficial and adverse influences contribute to their sexual risk behaviors. Latino MSM living in New York City (n = 412) were recruited using a modified time-space venue- and web-based sampling method. Negative binomial regression models estimated associations between indicators of accul

Parent-Adolescent Discrepancies in Parenting: Associations with Acculturation/ Enculturation and Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms in Mexican-Origin Families.

Parent-adolescent discrepancies in perceptions of parenting are consistently associated with adolescent internalizing symptoms, yet explanations for why these discrepancies emerge have focused primarily on demographic and family relational factors, which may be insufficient for Mexican-origin families navigating heritage and U.S. cultural contexts. A total of 479 mother-adolescent (adolescents' Wave 1 age: M = 12.88, SD = 0.89; 55.5% female) and 191 father-adolescent dyads (adolescents' Wave 1 age: M = 12.84, SD = 1.0; 46.6% female) from Mexican-origin families participated in this three-wave

Tobacco Use Assessment and Cessation Medication Orders Among Primary Care Patients by Ethnicity, Sex, and Acculturation Indicators.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic men and women in the United States. Smoking rates vary among Hispanic subgroups, with higher rates among those with indicators (e.g., language preference, nativity) of greater acculturation. It is recommended that clinicians ask about tobacco use and provide cessation treatment, as warranted. While studies in health care settings note disparities in tobacco-related care by ethnicity and acculturation proxies, we are unaware of studies that have evaluated these relationships among adult patients within community-based hea

Acculturation Profiles of Weight Perception Status among US Foreign-Born Hispanic/Latino Adults: A Mixture Model Approach.

The objective of this study was to identify profiles of acculturation and weight-by-weight perception status among United States (US) foreign-born Hispanic/Latino adults using a person-centered approach. We conducted a latent class analysis (LCA) on 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from US foreign-born Hispanic/Latino adults 18 years and older (N = 4944). Acculturation was assessed by self-reported linguistic acculturation questions from the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics. Weight was assessed by body mass index (BMI). Acculturation to accumulation? Variation in the income-subjective well-being relationship by language among Latine respondents in the U.S.

Five decades of continuous research have revealed the relationship between income and subjective well-being (SWB) to be complex and multifaceted. Recent studies demonstrate significant variation in the importance of income for well-being across a variety of social contexts. A portion of this work has focused on Latin America, which contains some of the happiest countries in the world despite having relatively low standards of living and prosperity. Explanations for this paradox have usually focused on the role of culture, suggesting that income may be less relevant for shaping well-being in cu
