Synthesis of Acetone-Derived C6 , C9 , and C12 Carbon Scaffolds for Chemical and Fuel Applications.

A simple, inexpensive catalyst system (Amberlyst 15 and Ni/SiO2 -Al2 O3 ) is described for the upgrading of acetone to a range of chemicals and potential fuels. Stepwise hydrodeoxygenation of the produced ketones can yield branched alcohols, alkenes, and alkanes. An analysis of these products is provided, which demonstrates that this approach can provide a product profile of valuable bioproducts and potential biofuels.

Effect of acetone accumulation on structure and dynamics of lipid membranes studied by molecular dynamics simulations.

The modulation of the properties and function of cell membranes by small volatile substances is important for many biomedical applications. Despite available experimental results, molecular mechanisms of action of inhalants and organic solvents, such as acetone, on lipid membranes remain not well understood. To gain a better understanding of how acetone interacts with membranes, we have performed a series of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a POPC bilayer in aqueous solution in the presence of acetone, whose concentration was varied from 2.8 to 11.2 mol%. The MD simulations of passive di

Secondary alcohol dehydrogenase catalyzes the reduction of exogenous acetone to 2-propanol in Trichomonas vaginalis.

Secondary alcohols such as 2-propanol are readily produced by various anaerobic bacteria that possess secondary alcohol dehydrogenase (S-ADH), although production of 2-propanol is rare in eukaryotes. Specific bacterial-type S-ADH has been identified in a few unicellular eukaryotes, but its function is not known and the production of secondary alcohols has not been studied. We purified and characterized S-ADH from the human pathogen Trichomonas vaginalis. The kinetic properties and thermostability of T. vaginalis S-ADH were comparable with bacterial orthologues. The substantial activity of S-AD

Evaluation of COSHH essentials: methylene chloride, isopropanol, and acetone exposures in a small printing plant.

The current study evaluated the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Essentials model for short-term task-based exposures and full-shift exposures using measured concentrations of three volatile organic chemicals at a small printing plant. A total of 188 exposure measurements of isopropanol and 187 measurements of acetone were collected and each measurement took approximately 60 min. Historically, collected time-weighted average concentrations (seven results) were evaluated for methylene chloride. The COSHH Essentials model recommended general ventilation control for both isopropa

Stability of toluene and reduction of acetone to 2-propanol in homogenates of the human liver, brain and lungs.

The homogenates of the livers, lungs and brains collected from five different cadavers were placed in the desiccator filled with vapours of rubber glue solvents and the concentrations of toluene, acetone and 2-propanol were determined during the 28-day storage at +25, +4 and -20 degrees C. It was demonstrated that only freezing of the material stabilised the initial concentration of these three xenobiotics while cooling to +4 degrees C resulted in limited conversion of acetone to 2-propanol and additionally reduced the biodegradation of toluene in the brain homogenates. Moreover, it was showed

Ethanol and acetone stimulate the proliferation of HaCaT keratinocytes: the possible role of alcohol in exacerbating psoriasis.

Alcohol has been reported to be a risk factor in psoriasis mainly based on the observation that there is a higher prevalence of alcohol abuse in individuals with psoriasis. The mechanism by which alcohol affects this disease is still elusive. So far there are no reports describing the effects of metabolites relevant to alcohol metabolism on the growth of human keratinocytes. In the present study we examined the effects of ethanol and acetone, which exceeds its normal endogenous level in the blood of heavy drinkers, on the proliferation of HaCaT keratinocytes. HaCaT cells were incubated for 30

Mixed ruminal microbes of cattle produce isopropanol in the presence of acetone but not 3-D-hydroxybutyrate.

The objective was to evaluate the ability of mixed rumen microbes to synthesize isopropanol from acetone or 3-D-hydroxybutyrate. Rumen fluid from seven mature, nonpregnant, dry Holstein cows was incubated with starch or cellulose and additions of acetone, 3-D-hydroxybutyrate, or saline. Rumen fluid was analyzed for isopropanol after 0, 3, 6, and 9 h. No isopropanol was present in any sample at 0 h, and none was present in incubations containing saline or 3-D-hydroxybutyrate at any subsequent time. Incubations that included acetone produced small amounts of isopropanol from 0 to 3 and 3 to 6 h

MOF-Derived ZnO Thin Films with Uniformly Dispersed Pt Nanoparticles for High-Performance Acetone Detection.

Acetone is a vital biomarker for noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes and metabolic disorders. However, its low concentration in exhaled breath and interference from other volatile compounds make its detection highly challenging. High surface area, uniform nanostructure, and precise catalytic surface decoration are key factors for achieving high-performance acetone sensors. This work reports the synthesis of platinum (Pt)-functionalized zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films, derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), engineered to enable highly sensitive and selective detection of acetone at low concent

Borophene based quasi planar nanocluster for ethanol, isobutanol, and acetone sensing: A first principle study.

In this study, the need for efficient detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, is addressed by investigating borophene-based B36 nanoclusters as gas sensors. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to examine the adsorption behavior of ethanol, isobutanol, and acetone on B36 surfaces, with a focus on vibrational modes, reactivity, and adsorption energies. It was found that acetone exhibits the strongest interaction with pristine B36, indicating its potential for robust sensing applications. To further enhance sensor perfo

Green Kilogram-Scale MOF Synthesis and Acetone-Induced Structural Evolution for Sieving Benzene from Cyclohexane.

The separation of benzene/cyclohexane represents a crucial yet challenging process in the petrochemical industry, as their azeotropic mixture cannot be effectively separated through simple distillation. Herein, we report a facile kilogram-batch synthesis of a metal-organic framework (JNU-81-A) in a water/ethanol solution at room temperature. When wetted by acetone, JNU-81-A undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural evolution, yielding JNU-81-B with altered coordination environments. Interestingly, further structural evolution was observed upon removal of acetone, resulting in JNU

Ultrafiltered dog allergen skin test compared with acetone precipitated and conventional dog: A retrospective study.

Background: Various formulations of dog allergen extracts, including conventional dog (also known as dog epithelium) and acetone precipitated (AP) dog, have been used for skin-prick testing (SPT), with AP dog showing improved antigen content but experiencing stability issues due to precipitant formation. Ultrafiltered (UF) dog extract has been developed to address these concerns by offering comparable allergen content to AP dog. This study retrospectively compared UF dog with conventional dog and AP dog in SPT. Objective: To compare the efficacy of UF dog extract with conventional dog and AP d

Yield Enhancement of Valuable Lipid Compounds from Squid (Doryteuthis gahi) Waste by Ethanol/Acetone Extraction.

The study focused on the extraction of valuable lipid compounds from squid (Doryteuthis gahi) waste by a low-toxicity solvent mixture (ethanol/acetone, 50:50, v/v). The effect of the waste weight/solvent volume (WW/SV, g·mL-1) ratio and the number of extractions (NoE) on the total lipid (TL), phospholipid (PL), and tocopherol yields and on the fatty acid (FA) profile (eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid contents; polyunsaturated FAs/saturated FAs and ω3/ω6 ratios) was investigated. As a result, an increased NoE led to an increased (p < 0.05) TL yield but a decreased (p < 0.05) proportion

Phase transitions of amorphous solid acetone in confined geometry investigated by reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy.

We investigated the phase transformations of amorphous solid acetone under confined geometry by preparing acetone films trapped in amorphous solid water (ASW) or CCl4. Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) were used to monitor the phase changes of the acetone sample with increasing temperature. An acetone film trapped in ASW shows an abrupt change in the RAIRS features of the acetone vibrational bands during heating from 80 to 100 K, which indicates the transformation of amorphous solid acetone to a molecularly aligned crystalline phase

Evaluation of barium-strontium nanoferrite-based sensors for VOC detection: the case of ethanol and acetone.

Over the past few decades, traditional approaches to detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been transformed by the integration of data intelligence, allowing valuable insights into sensor behavior when exposed to different gases. In gas sensing, VOCs such as acetone and ethanol are commonly used to evaluate sensors due to their closely related chemical properties, which makes distinguishing between them particularly challenging. In this study, we evaluated the detection of ethanol and acetone gases using spinel nanoferrites Ba0.5-x Sr x Fe2.5O4 (x = 0.00, 0.25 and 0.50). The materia

Co-Sensitization of ZnCo2O4 Hierarchical Microspheres with MoO3 and Ag Nanoparticles for Chemiresistive Detection of Acetone.

Recently, the detection of acetone by using a gas sensor fabricated with metal oxide semiconductors has stimulated intense research enthusiasm, owing to its promising application in the noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes by monitoring human exhaled breath. In this work, a potential acetone sensor was fabricated by comodification of the nanosheets-assembled ZnCo2O4 hierarchical microspheres (HMSs) with MoO3 and Ag nanoparticles (NPs). The ZnCo2O4 HMSs were synthesized via a solvothermal route and then sequentially modified with MoO3 and Ag NPs via immersion, calcination, and photoreduction route

Assessment of blood and urine total antioxidant and oxidative status in alcohol and acetone fatal poisonings.

Heavy alcohol consumption is a common cause of fatal poisoning, unlike acetone poisoning, which is very rare. Although oxidative stress plays a crucial role in alcohol and acetone toxicity, no studies compare the total redox status in fatally poisoned individuals. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidative status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) were examined in the blood and urine of patients fatally poisoned with ethanol (n = 21) and acetone (n = 21), along with healthy controls (n = 21). The TAC, TOS, and OSI concentrations were determined by means of colorimetric methods,

Preparation and CO2 adsorption of N-doped biochar and effect of acetone on its adsorption performance.

CO2 adsorption is a promising carbon capture technology. Boiler flue gas is a major source of CO2 emissions, with a complex composition. The influence of coexisting components (especially VOCs) on CO2 adsorption performance is an urgent problem to be explored. In this study, wheat stalk and wood were selected as the raw materials, and urea and melamine as nitrogen sources, a series of N-doped biochars were prepared. They were characterized by SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS, and their adsorption properties and mechanism for single-component CO2 and binary-component CO2 and acetone were systematically
