Outcomes and appropriateness of management of nosocomial Acinetobacter bloodstream infections at a teaching hospital in northeastern Malaysia.

Acinetobacter spp is a known nosocomial pathogen causing a wide range of clinical diseases such as pneumonia, wound infection and bloodstream infections (BSI). The clinical outcomes of acinetobacter BSI were determined by a 1:1 case control study involving 58 confirmed cases of acinetobacter BSI who were compared to other gram-negative infections. The crude mortality of acinetobacter BSI was 47.2%, which was significantly greater than other gram-negative BSI (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.10-3.24) but there were no significant differences in attributed mortality between the two groups. We found that patie

Infections caused by Acinetobacter species and their susceptibility to 14 antibiotics in Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos.

Acinetobacter spp are well recognised as causes of nosocomial infections particularly in patients with immature or defective body defence system. Information concerning these organisms are lacking in this environment. For this reason the pattern of infection and the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of these organisms isolated over a one-year period were studied. A total of 58 (3%) of the 2001 isolates from all clinical specimens received in the laboratory during the year were Acinetobacter spp. The 58 Acinetobacter spp constituted 5.5% of all the 1051 NLF-GNB isolated, and caused 4.6% of

Lipocalin-2 is an essential component of the innate immune response to Acinetobacter baumannii infection.

Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen and an emerging global health threat. Within healthcare settings, major presentations of A. baumannii include bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia. The increased prevalence of ventilated patients during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rise in secondary bacterial pneumonia caused by multidrug resistant (MDR) A. baumannii. Additionally, due to its MDR status and the lack of antimicrobial drugs in the development pipeline, the World Health Organization has designated carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii to be its priority

Concurrent pigeon paramyxovirus-1 and Acinetobacter baumannii infection in a fatal case of pneumonia.

Pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1), an antigenic variant of avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1), mainly infects pigeons. PPMV-1 genotype VI is the dominant genotype infecting pigeons in China. Human infection of avian paramyxovirus was rarely reported, and usually developed mild symptoms, such as conjunctivitis. We detected PPMV-1 in the lower respiratory sample from a fatal case with severe pneumonia; this patient aged 64 years presented cough, fever, and haemoptysis for 8 days and was admitted to hospital on Dec 26, 2020. He developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis in the f

Sheltering effect and indirect pathogenesis of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in polymicrobial infection.

The role of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb) in polymicrobial infection remains elusive. Having observed the ability of CRAb to shelter other susceptible bacteria from carbapenem killing, we sought to determine the factors contributing to this sheltering effect by transforming different recombinant plasmids into recipient A. baumannii cells. The sheltering effects of CRAb were reproduced in recipient A. baumannii cells that highly expressed carbapenem-hydrolyzing class D β-lactamases (CHDLs) through their associated strong promoter. With the use of Western blot analysis and

Sulbactam-based therapy for Acinetobacter baumannii infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have reported on the effectiveness of sulbactam-based therapies for Acinetobacter baumannii infection; however, there is little evidence that sulbactam-based therapies are more or less effective than alternative therapies. Unfortunately, there is a distinct lack of high quality data (i.e., from randomized controlled trials) available on this issue. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of sulbactam-based and non-sulbactam-based regimens in the treatment of A. baumannii infection. METHODS: We searched PubMed, MEDLIN

The pharmacodynamics of polymyxin B in Acinetobacter baumannii in murine thigh and lung infection models.

OBJECTIVES: Polymyxin B has been used for many years to treat Acinetobacter baumannii, but little is known about its pharmacodynamics (PD). We aimed to describe the PD of polymyxin B in treating A. baumannii infections. METHODS: Using the murine neutropenic thigh and lung infection models we determined the magnitude of the pharmacokinetic (PK)/PD index correlating with efficacy for eight A. baumannii strains. PD was analysed using the Emax model to determine PD targets. Using published human PK data the PTAs were calculated. RESULTS: In the thigh infection model, stasis, 1-log10 and 2-log10

Purple Pleural Effusion due to Acinetobacter baumannii Infection: A Rare Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Pleural effusion (PE) is a frequent clinical condition with diverse etiologies including heart failure, infections, and malignancies. While the color of pleural fluid is rarely considered diagnostic, unusual discolorations may offer important clinical clues. We report what appears to be only the third documented case of purple PE (PPE) in the medical literature. This case was associated with Acinetobacter baumannii infection, a rarely reported cause of PPE, providing additional insight into its potential pathophysiology. The tRNA methyltransferase TrmB is critical for Acinetobacter baumannii stress responses and pulmonary infection.

As deficiencies in tRNA modifications have been linked to human diseases such as cancer and diabetes, much research has focused on the modifications' impacts on translational regulation in eukaryotes. However, the significance of tRNA modifications in bacterial physiology remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we demonstrate that the m7G tRNA methyltransferase TrmB is crucial for a top-priority pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii, to respond to stressors encountered during infection, including oxidative stress, low pH, and iron deprivation. We show that loss of TrmB dramatically attenuates a

Perillaldehyde: A promising antibacterial agent for the treatment of pneumonia caused by Acinetobacter baumannii infection.

Perillaldehyde is a monoterpene compound mainly from the medicinal plant Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., which has hypolipidemic, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functions. In this investigation, we discovered that Perillaldehyde had powerful antimicrobial activity against Acinetobacter baumannii 5F1, and its minimum inhibitory concentration was 287.08 μg/mL. A. baumannii is a conditionally pathogenic bacterium with a high clinical resistance rate and is a major source of hospital infections, especially in intensive care units, which is one of the main causes of pneumonia. Bloodstream infection with Acinetobacter baumanii in a Plasmodium falciparum positive infant: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence of multi-antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, coupled with the risk of co-infections in malaria-endemic regions, complicates accurate diagnosis and prolongs hospitalization, thereby increasing the total cost of illness. Further, there are challenges in making the correct choice of antibiotic treatment and duration, precipitated by a lack of access to microbial culture facilities in many hospitals in Ghana. The aim of this case report is to highlight the need for blood cultures or alternative rapid tests to be performed routinely in malaria patients, t

Preclinical Assessment of Bacteriophage Therapy against Experimental Acinetobacter baumannii Lung Infection.

Respiratory infections caused by multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii are difficult to treat and associated with high mortality among critically ill hospitalized patients. Bacteriophages (phages) eliminate pathogens with high host specificity and efficacy. However, the lack of appropriate preclinical experimental models hampers the progress of clinical development of phages as therapeutic agents. Therefore, we tested the efficacy of a purified lytic phage, vB_AbaM_Acibel004, against multidrug-resistant A. baumannii clinical isolate RUH 2037 infection in immunocompetent mice and a human

Characteristics of invasive Acinetobacter infection: A multicenter investigation with molecular identification of causative organisms.

We examined microbiological and clinical characteristics of invasive Acinetobacter infection occurring in four hospitals located in the Minami-Ibaraki Area. Glucose-non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli isolated from the blood and the cerebrospinal fluid in independent cases between 2001 and 2014 were consecutively collected and those possibly to be Acinetobacter species were re-identified using molecular methods. Of 158 strains identified as Acinetobacter species, 155 were classified into 16 officially designated species, including 42 Acinetobacter pittii and 40 Acinetobacter baumannii. Imip
