Validation of a Consumer Sleep Wearable Device With Actigraphy and Polysomnography in Adolescents Across Sleep Opportunity Manipulations.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To compare the quality and consistency in sleep measurement of a consumer wearable device and a research-grade actigraph with polysomnography (PSG) in adolescents. METHODS: Fifty-eight healthy adolescents (aged 15-19 years; 30 males) underwent overnight PSG while wearing both a Fitbit Alta HR and a Philips Respironics Actiwatch 2 (AW2) for 5 nights, with either 5 hours or 6.5 hours time in bed (TIB) and for 4 nights with 9 hours TIB. AW2 data were evaluated using two different wake and immobility thresholds. Discrepancies in estimated total sleep time (TST) and wake after sl

Sleep Disturbance and Hyperactivity Detected by Actigraphy in Rats with Allergic Rhinitis or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Actigraphy is an easy and noninvasive method used to monitor human ultradian cycles. However, to our knowledge, it has been not applied to experiments with rodents. Therefore, using actigraphy, we assessed the ultradian cycles and behavior of rats. Rats with or without allergic rhinitis wore an actigraphy device, and triaxial acceleration was recorded. The counts that represent physical activity were lower from 8:00 to 20:00 than those from 20:00 to 8:00 in control rats, suggesting that their sleep phase was from 8:00 to 20:00 and their awake phase from 20:00 to 8:00. The counts from 8:00 to 1

Agreement between smartphone-based mobile sensing and actigraphy sleep metrics in young people with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD) and often precedes mood recurrence, particularly in youth. Smartphone-based mobile sensing offers a scalable alternative to objective sleep measurement via actigraphy, but its validity in youths with BD is unclear. METHODS: Analyses included adolescents and young adults (ages 14-25) with BD-I/II from the PROMPT-BD study with at least four days of concurrent actigraphy and mobile sensing. Actigraphy-derived sleep metrics were compared with smartphone-derived proxies. Agreement was evaluated using root mean squared error (

Device-assessed sleep health among older patients with heart failure: a cross-sectional study using actigraphy.

OBJECTIVE: Poor sleep is common among patients with heart failure (HF) and is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The utility of actigraphy in sleep assessment, especially among older adults, remains underexplored. This study aimed to assess sleep health among older adults with HF using actigraphy and explore associations between sleep parameters and cardiac biomarkers, functional performance and quality of life (QoL). DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: The study was conducted at an outpatient HF clinic within a tertiary cardiology service in a National Health Service hos

Beyond Conventional Sleep Parameters: Circadian Rhythm Disruption in Adolescents with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy: An Actigraphy Study.

Background/Objectives: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is characterized by seizures clustering in the early morning hours, reflecting circadian modulation of cortical excitability. To the best of our knowledge, circadian rest-activity rhythms have not previously been objectively characterized in adolescents with JME, a gap that may be relevant to understanding seizure timing in this population. This study aimed to characterize circadian rest-activity rhythms and sleep parameters in adolescents with JME compared to healthy controls (HCs) and to explore whether chronotype relates to the streng

Association of Stress and Neighborhood Social Context With Actigraphy-Measured and Self-Reported Adolescent Sleep Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Chronic stress and unfavorable neighborhood environments may increase adolescents' risk for poor sleep. Few studies have examined whether neighborhood social environments moderate associations of adolescents' perceptions of stress with actigraphy-measured and self-reported sleep outcomes. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study of adolescents aged 15-18 (n = 163) years, perceived stress (10-item Perceived Stress Scale) and perceived neighborhood collective efficacy and safety were assessed via survey. Over 14 days, actigraphy measured nightly sleep duration and timing, while ecological m

Performance of a Semi-Automated Hierarchical Rest Interval Detection Pipeline (actiSleep) for Wrist Actigraphy in Adolescents.

Actigraphy is a popular behavioral sleep assessment tool in research and clinical practice. Hierarchical hand-scoring approaches remain the standard for actigraphy rest interval estimation, but can be impractical for large cohort studies and suffer from reproducibility problems. We developed a semi-automated pipeline (actiSleep) to set rest intervals consistent with best-practice hand-scoring algorithms incorporating event marker, diary, light, and activity data. To evaluate actiSleep performance, we used data from an observational study of 51 adolescents (14-19yr), with and without family his

Comparison of EMG, Video, and Actigraphy Signals for Detecting Motor Activity in REM Sleep Behavior Disorder.

Background: Electromyography (EMG), video-polysomnography (vPSG), and wrist actigraphy are each used to develop diagnostic algorithms for rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD). However, the extent to which they capture overlapping versus distinct motor phenomena remains unknown. We evaluated the respective contributions of actigraphy, EMG and vPSG to the measurement of REM sleep motor activity. Methods: Seventeen adults with RBD (Mount Sinai n = 9; Stanford n = 8) and eight control participants from an open Newcastle dataset underwent vPSG and concomitant wrist actigraphy. Flexor di

Sleep biomarkers of seasonal vulnerability in major depressive episodes: a clinical study using actigraphy and polysomnography.

Seasonal affective disorder or major depressive episode (MDE) with winter seasonal pattern is a severe form of recurrent depressive disorder persisting for at least 40 % of the year. This seasonal vulnerability may involve specific chronobiological and sleep regulation disturbances, however, actigraphy and polysomnography studies reported conflicting and inconclusive findings. In this context, we hypothesized that individuals with MDE who exhibit higher vulnerability to seasonal changes display distinct chronobiological and sleep regulation disturbances. We investigated how sleep and circadian

Challenges in Using Parent-Reported Bed and Wake Times for Actigraphy Scoring in Rett-Related Syndromes.

Sleep problems are common in Rett syndrome and other neurogenetic syndromes. Actigraphy is a cost-effective, objective method for measuring sleep. Current guidelines require caregiver-reported bed and wake times to facilitate actigraphy data scoring. The current study examined missingness and consistency of caregiver-reported bed and wake times from paper sleep diaries and actigraphy event mark button presses in a sample of 38 individuals with Rett and related syndromes (aged 2-36 years, mean = 13.1) across two 14-day collection time points. Rates of missingness and discrepancy between the 2 s

The optimal measurement period of actigraphy for circadian rhythm in relation to adiposity: A retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: This study focused on the relationship between adiposity and Rest-Activity Rhythms (RAR), utilizing both parametric cosine-based models and non-parametric algorithms. The emphasis was on the impact of varying measurement periods (7-28 days) on this relationship. METHODS: We retrieved actigraphy data from two datasets, encompassing a diverse cohort recruited from an obesity outpatient clinic and a workplace health promotion program. Participants were required to wear a research-grade wrist actigraphy device continuously for a minimum of four weeks. The final dataset included 115 in

The effect of COVID-19 lockdowns on sleep time perception: Comparing actigraphy and sleep diary measures.

COVID-19 has become a long-term problem, and global pandemic conditions may persist for years. Researchers are providing mounting evidence of relationships between COVID-19 lockdowns and sleep problems. However, few studies have investigated the impact of home isolation on sleep time perception, especially in comparable social isolation situations with similar pressures. Subjective sleep time perception parameters were derived from sleep diaries. Objective parameters were derived from actigraphy. Subjective and objective data were obtained between February 17 and February 27, 2020 from 70 adul

The Actigraphy Sleep Score: A New Biomarker for Diagnosis, Disease Staging, and Monitoring in Human African Trypanosomiasis.

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) remains a serious public health problem with diagnostic and treatment challenges in many African countries. The absence of a gold-standard biomarker has been a major difficulty for accurate disease staging and treatment follow-up. We therefore attempted to develop a simple, affordable, and noninvasive biomarker for HAT diagnosis and staging. Simultaneous actigraphy and polysomnography as well as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) white blood cell (WBC) count, trypanosome presence, and C-X-C motif ligand (CXCL)-10 cytokine levels were performed in 20 HAT patients and

Convergent validity of actigraphy with polysomnography and parent reports when measuring sleep in children with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for rigorous measures of sleep in children with Down syndrome as sleep is a substantial problem in this population and there are barriers to obtaining the gold standard polysomnography (PSG). PSG is cost-prohibitive when measuring treatment effects in some clinical trials, and children with Down syndrome may not cooperate with undergoing a PSG. Minimal information is available on the validity of alternative methods of assessing sleep in children with Down syndrome, such as actigraphy and parent ratings. Our study examined the concurrent and convergent validity of di

Sleep and circadian rhythms as possible trait markers of suicide attempt in bipolar disorders: An actigraphy study.

BACKGROUND: The poor prognostic of Bipolar disorders (BD) is closely linked to deaths by suicide. Sleep and circadian abnormalities are observed during all phases of BD and are also associated with suicide attempt (SA). In this context, this study sought to identify specific sleep and circadian rhythms markers associated with suicidal attempt in euthymic patients with BD. METHODS: The sample (N = 236) comprised 3 groups: 147 patients with BD including 57 with a history of SA and 90 without (NoSA), and 89 healthy controls (HC). All participants were recorded during 21 days with actigraphy. RE

Self-assessment and rest-activity rhythm monitoring for effective bipolar disorder management: a longitudinal actigraphy study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent course and disruption of circadian rhythms are among the core features of bipolar disorder (BD). Thus, ongoing symptom monitoring is an essential part of good clinical management. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a study to validate the English version of the ASERT (Aktibipo questionnaire), a tool for self-assessment of mood symptoms. We also analyzed the relationship of self-assessed symptoms with clinician ratings and actigraphy measures, and investigated the possibility of predicting depressive episodes using subjective and digital measures. METHODS: This was a longitudinal s

Socioeconomic status, stress, and actigraphy-derived measures of sleep among middle-aged to older African American adults.

BACKGROUND: Stress purportedly mediates the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and sleep health. However, this mediation pathway remains poorly delineated, especially among African Americans. METHODS: Data from the Health among Older Adults Living in Detroit study included African American adults aged 50-89 years. Participants wore an actigraphy watch and completed daily diaries, including a modified 4-item Perceived Stress Scale, for five days. Measures of sleep duration (nocturnal total sleep time (TST)) and sleep quality (wake after sleep onset (WASO)) were derived from actigra
