A model system for studying the transcriptomic and physiological changes associated with mammalian host-adaptation by Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni.

Leptospirosis, an emerging zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution, is caused by spirochetes belonging to the genus Leptospira. More than 500,000 cases of severe leptospirosis are reported annually, with >10% of these being fatal. Leptospires can survive for weeks in suitably moist conditions before encountering a new host. Reservoir hosts, typically rodents, exhibit little to no signs of disease but shed large numbers of organisms in their urine. Transmission occurs when mucosal surfaces or abraded skin come into contact with infected urine or urine-contaminated water or soil. In humans,

Impacts of Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance Administered at Weaning on Behavioral and Physiological Adaptation of Beef Heifers to the Feedlot.

The effects of administering 10 mL of maternal bovine appeasing substance (mBAS) or water (control; CT) at weaning (day 0) before transport on feedlot adaptation and efficiency were evaluated in twenty-two Angus-influenced heifers (n = 11/treatment) over 28 days. Body weight (BW), salivary cortisol, blood for complete blood cell count, rectal temperature, chute score and exit speed were collected on days 0, 14 and 27. Intake, feeding duration, frequency and rate, as well as activity and rumination were monitored daily using automated systems. Average daily gain (ADG) and gain-to-feed ratio (G:

Splenic enlargement as a physiologic adaptation to obstructive sleep apnea and nocturnal hypoxemia: A retrospective cohort study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether spleen volume is increased in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and whether splenic enlargement correlates with disease severity, translating adaptive physiologic responses observed in diving and high-altitude populations to a clinical sleep disorder. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 50 adults with OSA (AHI ≥5) who underwent abdominal computed tomography (CT) prior to sleep study at a single tertiary care center. Spleen volume was measured using the prolate ellipsoid formula by two blinded reviewers. OSA severity metrics (apnea-hy

Physiological Effects, Molecular Regulation, and Adaptive Strategies of Heat Stress in Fish Under Global Warming.

Heat stress is one of the most prevalent and unavoidable environmental stressors in modern aquaculture and natural fishery ecosystems. With the intensification of global warming, the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme heat events have increased substantially, progressively reducing the thermal safety margin of fish. As ectothermic vertebrates, fish rely heavily on ambient water temperature to maintain physiological functions and metabolic homeostasis. Elevated temperatures can induce profound metabolic reprogramming, characterized by suppressed protein deposition, enhanced lipid mob

Understanding physiological adaptations of pregnancy to the chronic hypoxia of high altitude to inform obstetrical and neonatal care.

The chronic hypoxia experienced by high-altitude residents profoundly impacts pregnancy, influencing maternal health, placental function, and the growth and development of the fetus. Exposure to chronic hypoxia during pregnancy increases the risk of complications like preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction and has lasting effects on offspring, extending from infancy to adulthood. Understanding how chronic hypoxia alters physiological adaptations to pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes is essential for high-altitude populations and for gaining broader insights into the mechanisms underlying redu

Canine Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome impacts respiratory and hemodynamic physiological adaptations during pregnancy.

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) has a negative impact on animal welfare and quality of life, with perturbing signs of respiratory distress and both clinical and reproductive issues. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the respiratory pattern, uterine hemodynamic profile, and placenta development during different stages of pregnancy in bitches with or without symptoms of the brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. Bitches were grouped according to the symptomatic manifestation of BOAS before breeding, as Brachycephalic Syndrome Group (n = 10) and Non-brachyceph

A High-Resolution Microscopy System for Biological Studies of Cold-Adapted Species Under Physiological Conditions.

The Antarctic seabed harbors significant biodiversity, and almost 90% of oceanic environments are permanently below 5 °C (i.e., deep sea and polar regions). However, organisms whose entire lifecycle occurs around 0 °C are understudied, leaving this large and diverse proportion of the global biome poorly understood. To address this question at the cellular level, tools are required for high-resolution imaging of biological systems under physiological conditions. This poses severe technical challenges. High-resolution imaging objectives require short working distances and immersion media, causin

Advanced cardiac imaging in athlete's heart: unravelling the grey zone between physiologic adaptation and pathology.

Over the last decades, interest toward athlete's heart has progressively increased, leading to improve the knowledge on exercise-induced heart modifications. Sport may act as a trigger for life-threatening arrhythmias in patients with structural or electrical abnormalities, hence requiring to improve the diagnostic capability to differentiate physiological from pathological remodeling. Pathological alterations are often subtle at the initial stages; therefore, the challenge is to promptly identify athletes at risk of sudden cardiac death during the pre-participation screening protocols. Understanding vestibular-related physiological functions could provide clues on adapting to a new gravitational environment.

The peripheral vestibular organs are sensors for linear acceleration (gravity and head tilt) and rotation. Further, they regulate various body functions, including body stability, ocular movement, autonomic nerve activity, arterial pressure, body temperature, and muscle and bone metabolism. The gravitational environment influences these functions given the highly plastic responsiveness of the vestibular system. This review demonstrates that hypergravity or microgravity induces changes in vestibular-related physiological functions, including arterial pressure, muscle and bone metabolism, feedin

4D physiologically adaptable cardiac patch: A 4-month in vivo study for the treatment of myocardial infarction.

There has been considerable progress in engineering cardiac scaffolds for the treatment of myocardial infarction (MI). However, it is still challenging to replicate the structural specificity and variability of cardiac tissues using traditional bioengineering approaches. In this study, a four-dimensional (4D) cardiac patch with physiological adaptability has been printed by beam-scanning stereolithography. By combining a unique 4D self-morphing capacity with expandable microstructure, the specific design has been shown to improve both the biomechanical properties of the patches themselves and

Adaptation of Intestinal and Bile Acid Physiology Accompany the Metabolic Benefits Following Ileal Interposition in the Rat.

PURPOSE: Ileal interposition recapitulates many of the metabolic improvements similar to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. We aimed to determine whether the metabolic improvements seen following ileal interposition were conferred solely by the interposed segment by examining changes in neighboring intestinal segments as well as the composition of the bile acid pool. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult male rats were treated with either sham or ileal interposition surgeries. Glucose tolerance tests, body composition analysis, polymer chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and mass spectrometry we

The interruption of thyroid and interrenal and the inter-hormonal interference in fish: does it promote physiologic adaptation or maladaptation?

Endocrines, the chief components of chemical centers which produce hormones in tune with intrinsic and extrinsic clues, create a chemical bridge between the organism and the environment. In fishes also hormones integrate and modulate many physiologic functions and its synthesis, release, biological actions and metabolic clearance are well regulated. Consequently, thyroid hormones (THs) and cortisol, the products of thyroid and interrenal axes, have been identified for their common integrative actions on metabolic and osmotic functions in fish. On the other hand, many anthropogenic chemical sub

Adaptive cytoprotection of gastric surface epithelial cells against injury by physiologic concentrations of bile acid.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether adaptive cytoprotection of gastric mucosa could be demonstrated with concentrations of bile acid, which is normally found in the human stomach, and whether cyclooxygenase inhibition, in turn, could blunt the response. Surface epithelial cell exfoliation and ion fluxes were used as end points. A transduodenal gastric cannula was placed, and the pylorus/gastroesophageal junction was ligated in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats that had been anesthetized. In experiment 1 (N = 30), rat stomachs were exposed for 15 minutes to 5 ml of either a neutral

Post-Critical Period Transcriptional and Physiological Adaptations of Primary Sensory Cortex after Sensory Loss.

Single cell transcriptomics supports both cell-specific characterization and the identification of responses to changes in neural activity. Unilateral whisker denervation in adult male and female mice activates post-critical period synaptic plasticity, but the transcriptional responses of neuronal subtypes remain unknown. Single nucleus RNA sequencing and multiplex fluorescence in situ hybridization identified previously unexplored plasticity mechanisms in layer 4 (L4) excitatory neurons in intact sensory cortex. We detected differentially expressed genes related to glutamate receptor signalin

Investigating the adaptive coping mechanisms of rewilded elephants: A comparison of behavioural and physiological variables with wild elephants.

Literature on the adaptability and environmental processing abilities of ex-captive (rewilded) African elephants (Loxodonta africana) is sparse, emphasising the importance of this research area. By broadening our knowledge on the topic of rewilded elephant behaviour, we can generate a realistic expectation for stakeholders wanting to secure locations for these captive elephants with the aim of rewilding them. We studied 11 African elephants who have been rewilded onto various fenced reserves in South Africa. We measured their adaptability and response to their environment by comparing their be

Physiological responses and adaptive mechanisms of amphibians and reptiles to multiple interacting environmental stressors: an integrative review.

This integrative review synthesizes current knowledge on the physiological responses and adaptive mechanisms of amphibians and reptiles to multiple interacting environmental stressors, with particular emphasis on synergistic effects among temperature, hydric stress, disease, and pollution. Given the stronger empirical basis for amphibians in the existing literature, amphibian responses are covered in greater depth, while reptile-specific physiology, immunology, and emerging infectious diseases are explicitly addressed in dedicated sections throughout the review. Critical thermal tolerance anal

Anatomical and physiological adaptation of the scrotal artery with muscular reinforcement in the middle layer and connective reinforcement of the adventitia.

The histology of blood vessels shows they are structured in three layers or tunics: tunica intima, which includes the internal limiting lamina with high elastin content; tunica media of smooth muscles fibers of circular disposition, which includes the external limiting lamina; and tunica adventitia of connective tissue. The vascular system is essential in regulating body temperature, especially in the scrotum and testis. This study aimed to analyze the histology of the scrotal arteries and their possible relationship to testicular temperature homeostasis. This study used scrotal samples from h

Adaptive Physiological and Morphological Adjustments Mediated by Intestinal Stem Cells in Response to Food Availability in Mice.

Several studies have evaluated plastic changes in the morphology of the digestive tract in rodents subjected to caloric restriction or restricted availability. Nevertheless, studies that link these morphological responses to physiological consequences are scarce. In order to investigate short-term plastic responses in the intestine, we acclimated adult Mus musculus (BALB/c) males for 20 days to four distinctive treatments: two caloric regimens (ad libitum and 60% of calorie ingestion) and two levels of periodicity of the regimens (continuous and stochastic treatment). At the end of the treatme

Enhanced executive attention efficiency after adaptive force control training: Behavioural and physiological results.

Attention plays an important role in perception and cognition, and developing an effective method to train and improve attention is an essential and challenging task. In this study, fingertip-based adaptive force control tasks (AFCT) were explored for attention training, and the visual-channel task called an attention network test (ANT) was used to measure the level of attention before and after AFCT. The purposes of this study were to investigate whether AFCT can enhance the attention level on the ANT task and to elucidate the underlying electrophysiological mechanisms. The results showed tha
