A review of empirically supported psychosocial interventions for pain and adherence outcomes in sickle cell disease.

OBJECTIVE: To review empirical studies of psychological interventions for pain and adherence outcomes among patients with sickle cell disease. METHOD: We conducted a literature review of studies using psychological interventions targeted at pain and/or adherence behaviors related to sickle cell disease. The American Psychological Association Division 12 Task Force criteria (Chambless criteria) were used to evaluate the empirical support for three categories of interventions (cognitive-behavioral techniques, interventions aimed at behavioral change, and social support interventions). RESULTS:

Developing a drug-level feedback adherence counseling intervention for young MSM in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Young men who have sex with men (MSM) in the U.S. have suboptimal adherence to oral tenofovir-based pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), undermining HIV prevention goals. Drug-level feedback using urine point-of-care tenofovir assays has improved adherence in Eastern and Southern African settings but has not been assessed among U.S. MSM. SETTING: Community-based PrEP clinic in San Francisco and home-based remote counseling sessions among young MSM across the U.S. METHODS: A two-phase study was conducted. Phase 1 involved qualitative interviews with 20 young MSM (mean age 25.7 years)

Optimisation of Baby, Me & NRT: a nicotine replacement therapy adherence intervention for pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is effective for quitting smoking, but pregnant women appear to benefit less than others. Likely reasons include poor adherence due to erroneous beliefs about NRT. We developed a theory-guided, blended interpersonal and digital NRT adherence intervention ('Baby, Me & NRT' [BMN]) for delivery alongside standard UK pregnancy smoking cessation care. Aims were to optimise BMN's acceptability and feasibility of delivery prior to efficacy evaluation. METHODS: Three sequential cohorts of pregnant daily smokers received standard care plus BMN from pre-qui

Association of Cognitive Function Screening Results with Adherence and Performance in a Pedometer-Based Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: A randomized, controlled trial of a pedometer-based walking intervention with weekly activity goals led to increased walking among dialysis patients. We examined whether impairment per cognitive function screening is associated with adherence and performance in the intervention. METHODS: Thirty dialysis patients were randomly assigned to a 3-month pedometer-based intervention with weekly goals. Participants were administered the Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status (TICS), a test of global mental status. We examined the association of levels of impairment on the TICS (≥33: un

Cost-effectiveness of an adherence-enhancing intervention for gout based on real-world data.

AIM: Medication non-adherence influences outcomes of therapies for chronic diseases. Allopurinol is a cornerstone therapy for patients with gout; however, non-adherence to allopurinol is prevalent in Singapore and limits its effectiveness. Between 2008-2010, an adherence-enhancing program was implemented at the rheumatology division of a public tertiary hospital. The cost-effectiveness of this program has not been fully evaluated. With healthcare resources being finite, the value of investing in adherence-enhancing interventions should be ascertained. This study aims to evaluate the cost-effec

Feasibility of a Facebook Intervention for Exercise Motivation and Cardiac Rehabilitation Adherence: Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: While cardiac rehabilitation has been shown to be effective at improving coronary heart disease (CHD), participation is generally poor. Attempts to increase uptake and adherence often fail. Use of a Facebook intervention for this population may be a unique opportunity to support self-determined motivation and affect adherence. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a Facebook intervention on motivation for exercise and adherence to cardiac rehabilitation in patients with CHD during a 12-week, Phase II cardiac rehabilitation program. METHODS: A prospective, randomized controlled pil

A basic intervention improves CPAP adherence in sleep apnoea patients: a controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of choice for sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS) is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). However, CPAP effectiveness strongly depends on patient adherence to treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a low-cost, basic intervention on improving CPAP adherence. METHODS: A controlled parallel-group trial. Participants were SAHS patients for whom CPAP treatment was indicated. Those in the intervention group were shown the results of their sleep test and were told the importance of treatment adherence; the control group received nei

A randomized-controlled trial of an intervention to improve antidepressant adherence among Latinos with depression.

BACKGROUND: Studies have consistently shown that Latinos with depression have lower adherence to antidepressant medication. Given that low adherence is associated with poorer response to treatment, this is a likely source of unequal care. The current study examined the efficacy of a motivational interviewing intervention for improving antidepressant adherence among Latinos with a depressive disorder. METHODS: Participants were 50 Latinos with a DSM-IV diagnosis of major depression or dysthymia who were receiving treatment at a community mental health center. Participants were recruited from J

A systematic review of interventions to enhance initiation of and adherence to treatment for alcohol use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) contribute significantly to the global disease burden in terms of morbidity and mortality. While effective treatment options exist, engagement with care remains a challenge, impacting treatment outcomes and resource allocation, particularly in resource-constrained settings. In this review, we aim to systematically examine and synthesize the evidence on interventions targeting initiation of and adherence to treatment for AUDs. METHODS: A search was conducted on six electronic databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, Global Health, CINAHL and CENTRAL) using

A multilevel mHealth intervention boosts adherence to hydroxyurea in individuals with sickle cell disease.

Hydroxyurea reduces sickle cell disease (SCD) complications, but medication adherence is low. We tested 2 mobile health (mHealth) interventions targeting determinants of low adherence among patients (InCharge Health) and low prescribing among providers (HU Toolbox) in a multi-center, non-randomized trial of individuals with SCD ages 15-45. We compared the percentage of days covered (PDC), labs, healthcare utilization, and self-reported pain over 24 weeks of intervention and 12 weeks post-study with a 24-week preintervention interval. We enrolled 293 patients (51% male; median age 27.5 years, 8

A systematic review comparing antiretroviral adherence descriptive and intervention studies conducted in the USA.

We examined the extent to which studies aimed at testing interventions to improve antiretroviral adherence have targeted the facilitators of and barriers known to affect adherence. Of the 88 reports reviewed, 41 were reports of descriptive studies conducted with US HIV-positive women and 47 were reports of intervention studies conducted with US HIV-positive persons. We extracted from the descriptive studies all findings addressing any factor linked to antiretroviral adherence and from the intervention studies, information on the nature of the intervention, the adherence problem targeted, the p

A Pharmacist Telephone Intervention to Identify Adherence Barriers and Improve Adherence Among Nonadherent Patients with Comorbid Hypertension and Diabetes in a Medicare Advantage Plan.

BACKGROUND: Patients with comorbid hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are at a high risk of developing macrovascular and microvascular complications of DM. Controlling high blood pressure can greatly reduce these complications. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are recommended for patients with both DM and HTN by the American Diabetes Association guidelines, and their benefit and efficacy in reducing macrovascular and microvascular complications of DM have been well documented. Poor adherence, however, remains a significant b

Establishment and validation of an adherence prediction system for lifestyle interventions in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease worldwide, affecting about 1/4th of the global population and causing a huge global economic burden. To date, no drugs have been approved for the treatment of NAFLD, making the correction of unhealthy lifestyles the principle method of treatment. Identifying patients with poor adherence to lifestyle correction and attempting to improve their adherence are therefore very important. AIM: To develop and validate a scale that can rapidly assess the adherence of patients with NAFLD to lifestyle interventions. M
