Long-term follow-up of composite resin restorations with self-etching adhesives.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis, derived from a previous short-term (7-day) assessment, that the absence of conventional pulp protection is not responsible for long-term pulp complications of composite resin restorations with self-etching adhesives. METHODS: All 150 patients who received the restorations with self-etching adhesives were recalled at least 2 years after the placement of restorations. Of the 47 patients (31%) who responded, 106 restorations aged from 2.2 to 6.5 years were examined for tooth sensitivity and pulp vitality regarding long-term pulp complications. The results were

Interfacial ultramorphology of single-step adhesives: nanoleakage as a function of time.

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of single-step self-etching adhesives in preventing nanoleakage over a 90-day water-storage period, and analyse the ultramorphological characteristics of resin-dentin interfaces. Three single-step self-etching adhesives were evaluated: Adper Prompt L-Pop - LP (3M ESPE), iBond - iB (Heraeus Kulzer), and Clearfil Tri-S Bond - S3 (Kuraray). Bonded specimens were sectioned into 0.9-mm thick slabs and stored in water for 1, 60 or 90 days. After the storage periods, a silver tracer solution was used to reveal nanometer-sized spaces and evidence

Simulated Aging Studies on Porcelain Restoration Adhesives for Conservation in Chinese Museums.

The rapid development of archaeology in China has led to the excavation of numerous fragmented porcelain artifacts, for which adhesive materials play a critical role in conservation and restoration. The long-term stability of these adhesives directly affects the structural safety and visual integrity of restored objects. In this study, four adhesives widely used in Chinese conservation practice-epoxy resin Hezhong AAA, epoxy resin Hongxing 509, acrylic resin Paraloid B-72, and cyanoacrylate adhesive 502-were systematically investigated through simulated cyclic aging experiments. A multi-analyt

Screening high-quality lignins extracted from biomass to prepare biobased wood adhesives.

Practical lignin valorization strategies have the potential to enhance the profitability of lignocellulosic biorefineries. Leveraging the phenolic structure of lignin, commercially available lignins (for example, kraft, soda or biorefinery lignin) have been extensively studied as renewable substitutes for phenol in the synthesis of lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives. However, the large-scale production and adoption of lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives remain limited owing to challenges related to appearance, performance and cost. To address these limitations, this protocol out

Single-Component High-Performance Adhesives Enabled by Synergistic Supramolecular and Covalent Polymerization.

The development of high-strength supramolecular adhesives from a single small molecule is a highly compelling research goal, as it offers the potential for lightweight, reversible, and stimuli-responsive bonding systems. However, achieving such adhesives presents significant challenges. Herein, we present a novel tripodal multifunctional molecule, BTA-C7, designed to exploit a synergistic supramolecular and covalent polymerization strategy to achieve a remarkable adhesive performance. BTA-C7 features a central benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) core from which cyanostilbene moieties extend, ea

Double-Network Soy Protein Adhesives with Enhanced Water Retention and Bonding Strength.

Developing soy protein adhesives with high water retention and strong bonding strength is essential. Such materials can serve as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based formaldehyde adhesives in wood panel manufacturing. However, a trade-off between precure water retention and postcure bonding strength remains a major challenge, and current strategies rarely achieve simultaneous enhancement of both properties. Inspired by the multi-enhancement mechanisms of double‑network systems, we established a hierarchical dual‑network adhesive system. It involves the self-assembly of chitosan into a

Antibacterial Hydrogel Adhesives Based on Bifunctional Telechelic Dendritic-Linear-Dendritic Block Copolymers.

Antibiotic-resistant pathogens have been declared by the WHO as one of the major public health threats facing humanity. For that reason, there is an urgent need for materials with inherent antibacterial activity able to replace the use of antibiotics, and in this context, hydrogels have emerged as a promising strategy. Herein, we introduce the next generation of cationic hydrogels with antibacterial activity and high versatility that can be cured on demand in less than 20 s using thiol-ene click chemistry (TEC) in aqueous conditions. The approach capitalizes on a two-component system: (i) tele

Self-Neutralizing Melamine-Urea-Formaldehyde-Citric Acid Resins for Wood Panel Adhesives.

In this study, we used a self-neutralizing system to counteract too acidic a pH, unsuitable for wood adhesives, and tested it on MUF resins augmented by the addition of citric acid or other organic acids, based on the addition of small percentages of hexamine or another suitable organic base to form an acid-base buffer. In this manner, the pH of the adhesive was maintained above the minimum allowed value of 4, and the strength results of wood particleboard and plywood bonded with this adhesive system increased due to the additional cross-linking imparted by the citric acid. Thus, the wood cons

Instant and Tough Adhesives for Rapid Gastric Perforation and Traumatic Pneumothorax Sealing.

Hydrogel adhesives are hot spots due to their ubiquity and practical relevance. However, achieving a robust wet adhesion is still a challenge due to the preferential formation of hydrogen bonds between interfacial fluids and bulk hydrogel, as well as targeted substrates. Herein, a half-dry adhesive consisting of a silk fibroin (SF) semi-interpenetrating network and poly(acrylic acid) covalent network, which can allow a rapid liquid adsorption and repulsion process encountering a wet tissue, is reported. The remaining water enables excellent hydrogel flexibility to a dynamic surface, while the

Electrospinning of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives for human dural repair in endonasal surgery.

Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) leakage is a major postoperative complication requiring surgical intervention, resulting in prolonged healing and higher costs. Biocompatible polymers, such as cyanoacrylates, are currently used as tissue adhesives for closing surgical defects and incisions. Coupling these polymers with nanofiber technology shows promising results for generating nanofibers used in wound care, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. Fiber membranes formed by electrospinning of n-octyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NOCA) are investigated for in situ dural closures after neurosurgery to improve the

Analysis of the Structural Aspects of Tannin-Based Adhesives by 2D-NMR.

We developed non-toxic, harmless adhesives composed of all-natural and renewable resources, of which one was composed of tannin and gelatin, which unfortunately was lacking water resistance, and the other of tannin and ε-poly-l-lysine. In this study, we analyzed the chemical structures of these adhesives by two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) to explain the difference in water-resistance of the two glues. The results showed that only one proton was left in the benzene ring of tannin after mixing. This suggests that the amino group of the protein was directly attached to the ben

Morphology and Crystallinity of Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Adhesives with Different Molar Ratios.

Using formaldehyde and urea as raw materials, a stable urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) is synthesized by the "alkali-acid-alkali" method. Unlike most thermosetting resins, UF often shows the appearance of crystal domains. In order to understand the relationship between the crystal and morphology of UF resin, analysis was carried out with the help of polarizing microscopy (POM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The changes of two kinds of UF resins with molar ratios (F/U) of 1.4

Adhesions and Anti-Adhesion Systems Highlights.

The peritoneal and intrauterine cavities are lined by fragile membranes with a high-wound healing capacity, e.g. repairing the endometrium in its cyclical "injury and scar-free repair process" during menstruation. However, peritoneal and intrauterine fibrosis and adhesions can develop after surgical trauma through activation of molecular, immune and genetic mechanisms. During procedures with a high-risk of adhesions, the use of new peritoneal and intrauterine conditions in combination with anti-adhesion substances are promising measures to preserve peritoneal and endometrial function and avoid
