Effects of Nonsurgical Periodontal Treatment on Salivary Adipokines: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease contributing to systemic metabolic imbalances. Adipose tissue functions as an endocrine organ, releasing adipokines that influence insulin resistance and energy homeostasis. These mediators, such as visfatin, leptin, or adiponectin, may be modulated by periodontal inflammation. This review aims to synthesize current evidence on salivary adipokine levels in periodontitis and to assess the impact of nonsurgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) on these biomarkers. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted across PubMed, Cochrane Library,

Adipokines as Prognostic Biomarkers in Multiple Myeloma: A Case-Control Study.

Background and Objectives: Multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable plasma cell malignancy with heterogeneous clinical outcomes. Although current prognostic systems integrate biochemical and cytogenetic parameters, they do not fully capture disease complexity. Adipocytes within the bone marrow microenvironment secrete adipokines that regulate inflammation, metabolism, and immune interactions and may influence disease progression. This study aimed to assess circulating adipokines and related microenvironmental mediators as potential biomarkers of disease activity and treatment response in MM.

Determination of Fertility Hormones and Adipokines by LC-MRM/MS Analysis.

Due to the increase in the rate of male and female infertility, assisted fertilization practices are currently adopted as valid support for couples unable to get pregnant. Analytical approaches for fertility hormone dosages are constantly being developed, following the technological progress of fertilization methods that have evolved for more than a century. Indeed, the analysis of fertility hormones in serum samples is a common clinical practice to check the fertility state, but absolute quantification of these hormones is a great challenge due to biological variability and low serum concentr

Circulating Adipokines and Hepatokines Serve as Diagnostic Markers during Obesity Therapy.

Allocation of morbidly obese patients to either conservative therapy options-such as lifestyle intervention and/or low-calorie diet (LCD)-or to bariatric surgery-preferably sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB)-represents a crucial decision in order to obtain sustainable metabolic improvement and weight loss. The present study encompasses 160 severely obese patients, 81 of whom participated in an LCD program, whereas 79 underwent RYGB surgery. The post-interventional dynamics of physiologically relevant adipokines and hepatokines (ANGPTL4, CCL5, GDF15, GPNMB, IGFBP6), as well a

Adipokines, Cardiovascular Risk, and Therapeutic Management in Obesity and Psoriatic Arthritis.

Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease with skin and joint pathology as the dominant characteristics. Scientific evidence supports its systemic nature and relevant relationship with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and associated conditions. Metabolic syndrome and obesity share common signaling pathways with joint inflammation, reinforcing the idea that adipose tissue is a major contributor to disease development and severity. The adipose tissue is not a mere energy store but also an endocrine organ participating in the immune response. In the search for the best therapeutic strateg

Adiponectin and Chemerin: Contrary Adipokines in Regulating Reproduction and Metabolic Disorders.

Metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes are one of the most familiar risk factors in the present time among every age-group. It is associated with altered levels of adipokines such as adiponectin, chemerin, leptin, resistin, visfatin, and so on. Adiponectin is one of the adipocyte-specific protein with novel applications pertaining to metabolism by promoting insulin sensitivity and regulating glucose and fatty acid catabolism, while chemerin is considered as an inhibitor of insulin signaling and glucose catabolism. Other than these established functions, both the adipokines are

Serum adipokines levels in patients with systemic sclerosis: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis is an chronic inflammatory autoimmune diseases. Adipokine has been reported to play an important role in modulating immune responses. Recent studies suggest that adipokine also plays some roles in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis (SSc). However, published data regarding the relationship between plasma/serum adipokine levels and SSc are contradictory. The aim of this study was at performing a meta-analysis to derive a more accurate estimation and further investigate the association of plasma/serum leptin and adiponectin levels with SSc patients. METHODS: Pu

Adipokines as potential prognostic biomarkers in patients with acute knee injury.

This review considers adipokines as predictive biomarkers for early onset post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Serum concentrations of leptin and resistin can predict radiographic changes and are elevated in early KOA, with higher leptin concentrations independently associated with more severe knee changes. Plasma concentrations of resistin are chronically elevated after injury. Leptin, resistin, chemerin and vistfatin induce catabolic enzymes associated with cartilage degeneration. Available literature on adipokines in post-traumatic KOA pathogenesis suggests that they could contribute t

Interplay of adipokines and myokines in cancer pathophysiology: Emerging therapeutic implications.

Excess body weight constitutes a worldwide health problem with epidemic proportions impacting on the risk and prognosis of several disease states including malignancies. It is believed that the metabolic changes associated with weight gain, particularly visceral obesity, and physical inactivity could lead to dysfunctional adipose and muscle tissues causing insulin resistance, low-grade chronic inflammation and abnormal secretion of adipokines and myokines. The complex paracrine and endocrine interconnection between adipokines and myokines reflects a yin-yang balance with important implications

Targeting the Adipose-Brain Axis: Adipokines as Key Modulators of Cognitive Dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Adipose tissue is an active endocrine organ that secretes adipokines capable of modulating brain function through metabolic, inflammatory, vascular, and neurotrophic pathways. Emerging evidence suggests that dysregulated adipokine signaling contributes to cognitive decline and neurodegeneration by impairing neuronal energy metabolism, mitochondrial function, insulin signaling, and synaptic plasticity, while amplifying oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. Therefore, this review aimed to summarize and discuss the potential roles of adipokines in brain health, particularly cognit

Elevated adipokines and myokines are associated with fatigue in long COVID patients.

BACKGROUND: Persistent fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms experienced by patients recovering from COVID-19, contributing significantly to the burden of "long COVID" or post-COVID-19syndrome. However, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain inadequately understood. Few studies have examined the association between fatigue and pulmonary or cardiac function, systemic biomarkers, or morphological changes in the lungs and diaphragm. Furthermore, the potential influence of vaccination on the persistence of fatigue has not been fully explored. This study aims to i

Impact of Maternal Overweight and Obesity on Adipokines During Pregnancy and Lactation.

Maternal overweight and obesity have reached global epidemic levels, altering metabolic adaptations during pregnancy and lactation. Beyond their well-known impact on gestational outcomes, elevated BMI profoundly influences the secretion of adipokines-hormones derived from adipose tissue that circulate in maternal blood and are secreted into breast milk-thereby directly linking maternal metabolism to offspring development. In this state-of-the-art narrative review, we synthesize current evidence on how maternal overweight and obesity shape concentrations of key adipokines (leptin, adiponectin,
