INTRODUCTION: Tobacco-related content is prevalent on social media, yet many methods of measuring exposure are inadequate due to the personalized nature of online marketing. The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between exposure to pro-tobacco messages (both industry-sponsored and user-generated) and the use of tobacco products, as reported via ecological momentary assessment (EMA).
METHODS: Young adults (n = 175) were instructed to record all sightings of marketing (both in-person and online) related to tobacco for 28 days. Tobacco product use and recall of message encounte

The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence have led to highly personalized and programmatic advertising, using retargeted advertisements that incorporate Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) appeals to enhance customer engagement. Retargeted advertisements chase customers after they leave a website without conversion. This study uniquely investigates the persistent influence of retargeted advertisements on young people in the digital sphere, particularly when synergistically combined with FoMO appeals. It further applies the Theory of Planned Behavior to understand its impact. FoMO is conceptuali

OBJECTIVE: The proliferation of gambling advertising has raised concerns about its effects on gambling behavior, particularly among vulnerable populations such as highest risk gamblers. This study examines the influence of gambling advertising on attitudes and intentions to gamble on a large sample of gamblers in France.
METHOD: We used an online questionnaire in a cross-sectional design, with data collected between February 15 and April 30, 2021. Participants were recruited through a single recruitment channel, namely the client mailing list of the Française des Jeux, resulting in a final sa

Background and aims Despite recent growth in sports betting advertising, minimal research has examined the influence of different advertising message attributes on betting attitudes and behaviors. This study aimed to identify which attributes of sports betting advertisements most engage attention, interest, desire and likelihood of betting among non-problem, low-risk, moderate-risk, and problem gamblers. Methods A novel approach utilizing an experimental design incorporating conjoint analysis examined the effects of: three message formats (commentary, on-screen display, and studio crossover);

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death and disability globally and risks for many NCDs are associated with commercial determinants of health for tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed foods (UPFs), and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Our aim was to understand reported consumption patterns of these four commodities along with reported exposure to advertising, promotion, and sponsorship (APS), focusing on vulnerable groups including young adults (18-24), less wealthy (quintiles 1 and 2), and women. We conducted a systematic randomized household survey of adults at two sites

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling is a public health issue and widespread advertising of gambling products may contribute to gambling harms. Sports-related gambling advertising includes advertising around sports games or for sports betting products. This review aimed to provide the most systematic and up-to-date review of the literature on the association between sports-related gambling advertising and gambling behaviour.
METHODS: A systematic literature search of quantitative studies up to 13 February 2024 was undertaken following PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria were quantitative studies p

Pursuant to legislative mandates the proportion of job postings that include wage and salary information has rapidly increased. However, many organizations comply by advertising very broad salary ranges. Here, we examine how the width of a pay range influences prospective applicants' perceptions. Although in other contexts people often exhibit a preference for vaguely specified gains, we draw from decision and signaling theories to hypothesize negative reactions to highly ambiguous pay ranges and test them in three preregistered experiments. In Study 1, business students evaluate a job posting

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the extent of food and beverage advertising on bus shelters in a deprived area of the UK, to identify the healthfulness of advertised products, and any differences by level of deprivation. The study also sought to assess the creative strategies used and extent of appeal to young people.
DESIGN: Images of bus shelter advertisements were collected via in person photography (in 2019) and Google Street View (photos recorded in 2018). Food and beverage advertisements were grouped into one of seventeen food categories and classified as healthy/less healthy using the UK Nutrie

Background: Violence or violent imagery, defined as any image that conveys an imminent physical or existential threat to person(s), property, or society, with or without weaponry, is often featured in advertising. However, the effects of exposure (sporadic or chronic) to such imagery are not fully understood. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence and types of violence portrayed in advertising on public buses in New York City (NYC). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, from April to July 2019, researchers catalogued and coded the print advertising images present on the p

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential environmental endocrine-disrupting compound found in water and a potential threat to aquatic habitats. Cd has been shown to have various short-term effects on aquatic animals; however, evidence for long-term effects of Cd on vocal communications in amphibians is lacking. To better understand the long-term effects of low-dose Cd on acoustic communication in amphibians, male Xenopus laevis individuals were treated with low Cd concentrations (0.1, 1, and 10 μg/L) via aqueous exposure for 24 months. At the end of the exposure, the acoustic spectrum characteristics o

BACKGROUND: Since 2008, Australia has seen the rapid emergence of marketing for online and mobile sports wagering. Previous research from other areas of public health, such as tobacco and alcohol, has identified the range of appeal strategies these industries used to align their products with culturally valued symbols. However, there is very limited research that has investigated the tactics the sports wagering industry uses within marketing to influence the consumption of its products and services.
METHOD: This study consisted of a mixed method interpretive content analysis of 85 sports wage

BACKGROUND: Previous research demonstrated that providing qualitative and quantitative information in a "drug facts box" may help individuals understand prescription drug information in print-based direct-to-consumer advertisements. The authors sought to determine whether qualitative, quantitative, or a combination thereof best communicates benefit and risk information.
METHODS: To replicate and extend previous research, the authors used simple quantitative drug information. A randomized controlled study was conducted with 5067 Internet panelists with heartburn. Participants viewed a drug fac

CONTEXT: Direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising of prescription drugs in the United States is both ubiquitous and controversial. Critics charge that it leads to overprescribing, while proponents counter that it helps avert underuse of effective treatments, especially for conditions that are poorly recognized or stigmatized.
OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the effects of patients' DTC-related requests on physicians' initial treatment decisions in patients with depressive symptoms.
DESIGN: Randomized trial using standardized patients (SPs). Six SP roles were created by crossing 2 conditions (major depre

Individuals with stigmatized health conditions like vitiligo often turn to online communities for support, where they encounter numerous health advertisements. This study examines how vitiligo patients perceive the emotional and rational appeals within these ads. We employed a netnographic methodology within a large, public Facebook support group for vitiligo (N ≈ 28,000), combining in-depth interviews and participant observation to analyze patient interactions. Our analysis is guided by an integrated framework of social cognitive theory (SCT) and stigma management communication (SMC) theory,

OBJECTIVE: Outdoor advertisements for food and drink products form a large part of the food environment and they disproportionately promote unhealthy products. However, less is known about the social patterning of such advertisements. The main aim of this study was to explore the socio-economic patterning of food and drink advertising at bus stops in Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh.
DESIGN: Bus stop advertisements were audited to identify food/drink adverts and classify them by food/drink category (i.e. 'advert category'). This data were then linked to area-based deprivation and proximity
