Infections caused by Aeromonas species in hospitalized patients: A case series.

The Aeromonads are ubiquitous Gram-negative bacilli that cause community acquired, and healthcare associated infections. In this retrospective study we analysed clinical and microbiological characteristics of thirty-six culture proven Aeromonas infections. The most common species isolated was A.hydrophila. Clinical presentation included syndromes like skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI), urinary tract infections, and central line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Most of the isolates were sensitive to aminoglycosides [97.2%], followed by 3 rd generation cephalosporins, quinolones

The Aeromonas salmonicida plasmidome: a model of modular evolution and genetic diversity.

High-throughput genomic sequencing has helped to reveal the plasmidome of Aeromonas salmonicida. This literature review provides an overview of A. salmonicida's rich plasmidome by presenting all the plasmids identified so far, addressing their biological importance and the functional links between them. The plasmids of A. salmonicida, especially those bearing antibiotic resistance genes, can provide clues about interactions of this species with other pathogens (animals and humans), as is the case for pRAS3-3432 and Chlamydia suis or pSN254b and Salmonella enterica. In addition to antibiotic re

Transcriptome analysis in the skin of Carassius auratus challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila.

Skin plays an important role in the innate immune responses of fish, particularly towards bacterial infection. To understand the molecular mechanism of mucosal immunity of fish during bacterial challenge, a de novo transcriptome assembly of crucian carp Carassius auratus skin upon Aeromonas hydrophila infection was performed, the latter with Illumina Hiseq 2000 platform. A total of 118111 unigenes were generated and of these, 9693 and 8580 genes were differentially expressed at 6 and 12 h post-infection, respectively. The validity of the transcriptome results of eleven representative genes was

Bacteriological, Clinical and Virulence Aspects of Aeromonas-associated Diseases in Humans.

Aeromonads have been isolated from varied environmental sources such as polluted and drinking water, as well as from tissues and body fluids of cold and warm-blooded animals. A phenotypically and genotypically heterogenous bacteria, aeromonads can be successfully identified by ribotyping and/or by analysing gyrB gene sequence, apart from classical biochemical characterization. Aeromonads are known to cause scepticemia in aquatic organisms, gastroenteritis and extraintestinal diseases such as scepticemia, skin, eye, wound and respiratory tract infections in humans. Several virulence and antibio

Wild waterfowl as potential vectors of Vibrio cholerae and Aeromonas species.

OBJECTIVE: To study the hypothesis that migratory waterfowl are possible disseminators of Vibrio cholerae and Aeromonas. METHODS: We monitored the presence of V. cholerae and Aeromonas in three wild waterfowl species. RESULTS: V. cholerae and Aeromonas species were isolated and identified from intestine samples of little egrets and black-crowned night herons. Only Aeromonas species were isolated from black-headed gulls. The majority of Aeromonas isolates were A. veronii. Twenty-three V. cholerae serogroups were identified. V. cholerae serogroup O1 was found in the intestine DNA extractions f

Strong Genomic and Phenotypic Heterogeneity in the Aeromonas sobria Species Complex.

Aeromonas sobria is a mesophilic motile aeromonad currently depicted as an opportunistic pathogen, despite increasing evidence of mutualistic interactions in salmonid fish. However, the determinants of its host-microbe associations, either mutualistic or pathogenic, remain less understood than for other aeromonad species. On one side, there is an over-representation of pathogenic interactions in the A. sobria literature, of which only three articles to date report mutualistic interactions; on the other side, genomic characterization of this species is still fairly incomplete as only two draft

[Structural and functional analysis of the serine protease from Aeromonas sobria].

Aeromonas species are Gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacteria found ubiquitously in a variety of aquatic environments and most commonly implicated as causative agents of gastroenteritis. Sepsis is a fatal complication of Aeromonas infectious diseases, particularly in immune-compromised patients. Two species, Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas sobria, are associated with human disease. Feasible virulence factors of Aeromonas include fimbrial and afimbrial adhesion molecules, hemolysins, enterotoxins, lipases and proteases. Recently, we purified a 65-kDa A. sobria serine protease (ASP) from

Photodynamic inactivation of Aeromonas hydrophila by cationic phthalocyanines with different hydrophobicity.

Antibacterial photodynamic therapy is a pioneering method for the inactivation of pathogenic bacteria. Four tetra alkyl-substituted cationic phthalocyanines with different hydrocarbon chains attached to the pyridyloxy group were synthesized. These photodynamic sensitizers were studied for antibacterial inactivation of a multidrug-resistant strain of Gram-negative bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila. Aeromonas species are recognized as etiological agents of a wide spectrum of diseases in humans and animals. The uptake of phthalocyanines by the bacterial cells decreased with an increase in cell densi

Outcomes of Aeromonas bacteremia in patients with different types of underlying disease.

Over a 6-year period, 42 patients with different underlying diseases developed Aeromonas bacteremia in our hospital. The male to female ratio was 2:1. The vast majority of these patients had underlying diseases, including various types of neoplasm (n = 14), liver cirrhosis (n = 11), biliary tract disorder (n = 10) and other illnesses (n = 7). Community-acquired bacteremia was predominant (33 cases, 79%). Aeromonas hydrophila was the most common species isolated (88%). Monomicrobial bacteremia was more common than polymicrobial bacteremia (64% vs 36%). Monomicrobial bacteremia was associated wi

Snake-to-human transmission of Aeromonas (Pl) shigelloides resulting in gastroenteritis.

A healthy young man developed acute gastroenteritis after handling an infected bao constrictor. The animal died after contracting "mouth-rot disease", a progressive ulcerative stomatitis of snakes charactistically caused a Aeromonas species. Stool cultures from the patient yielded a heavy growth of Aeromonas (Plesiomonas) shigelloides but no other enteric pathogens. Treatment wit sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim resulted in rapid relief of clinical symptoms. Aeromonas species are not considered part of the normal human fecal flora and gastroenteritis due to this organism is rare. Furthermore, thi

A novel bacteriophage pAEh1 for controlling Aeromonas hydrophila infection in aquaculture.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a significant pathogen in aquaculture, causing elevated mortality in cultured species. Bacteriophages, known for their specificity, have emerged as promising antimicrobial agents. In this study, the biological characteristics of A. hydrophila were examined, revealing hemolytic activity and multi-drug resistance. A bacteriophage, pAEh1, was isolated from aquaculture water using A. hydrophila as the host. Biological characterization identified it as a member of the Siphoviridae family. Functional annotation of its proteins classified them into categories including transcr

An Outbreak of Aeromonas salmonicida in Juvenile Siberian Sturgeons (Acipenser baerii).

Aeromonas salmonicida is one of the major threats to world aquaculture, causing fish furunculosis and high mortality rates in cultured fish, particularly salmonids. Although Aeromonas spp. is a thoroughly studied pathogen, little is known regarding aeromoniasis in sturgeons. After a mortality outbreak, four juvenile sturgeons (Acipenser baerii) were submitted for autopsy and tissue samples were collected for histopathological and microbiological studies. The external examination revealed size heterogenicity, skin hyperpigmentation and reduced body condition of sturgeons. Within the abdominal c

The lip gene contributes to the virulence of Aeromonas veronii strain TH0426.

Aeromonas veronii (A. veronii) is a pathogen that can infect aquatic organisms and mammals and has caused irrecoverable economic losses to the aquaculture industry. The results of an epidemiological investigation showed that the number of cases of A. veronii have increased gradually in recent years, and its drug resistance and virulence has shown an upward trend. In this study, we constructed an A. veronii mutant strain Δlip, by homologous recombination and studied its function. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the biofilm formation ability between the Δlip and th

Aeromonas hydrophila endogenous endophthalmitis in a patient with underlying adenocarcinoma of the colon.

An 83-year-old man presented with a red right eye, rapidly deteriorating vision and no history of ocular trauma or surgery. The patient had no vitritis on presentation, which confounded a diagnosis. Vitreous tap and injection of intravitreal antibiotics was performed day 2, however, the eye could not be saved and was surgically removed. Tissue culture reported Aeromonas hydrophila as the infective organism. Investigation into the source of infection revealed mural thickening of the caecum with CT of the abdomen. On completion of antibiotic treatment, the patient was referred for a colonoscopy,

An in silico analysis of acquired antimicrobial resistance genes in Aeromonas plasmids.

Sequences of 105 Aeromonas species plasmids were probed for acquired anti-microbial resistance (AMR) genes using a bioinformatics approach. The plasmids showed no positive linear correlation between size and GC content and up to 55 acquired AMR genes were found in 39 (37%) plasmids after in silico screening for resistance against 15 antibiotic drug classes. Overall, potential multiple antibiotic resistance (p-MAR) index ranged from 0.07 to 0.53. Up to 18 plasmids were predicted to mediate multiple drug resistance (MDR). Plasmids pS121-1a (A. salmonicida), pWCX23_1 (A. hydrophila) and pASP-a58

Aeromonas as a Cause of Purulent Folliculitis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Aeromonas species are rarely an identified cause of folliculitis. Here, we describe the case of a patient who had purulent folliculitis of the breast caused by an Aeromonas species and review 4 other cases presented in the literature, highlighting the commonalities observed. Aeromonas infection should be considered in patients who present with purulent folliculitis, particularly those with exposure to nonchlorinated pools or baths.
