BACKGROUND: Premorbid personality could play a role in the onset of behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPS) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) but prospective studies are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed at prospectively assessing the influence of premorbid personality traits on BPS evolution in a population of patients with prodromal or mild AD.
METHODS: We used a multicenter prospective cohort study of 237 patients followed-up for 18 months. The influence of personality traits on BPS evolution, measured with Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), was assessed using linear mixed-effect m

This study assessed suicidal risk in patients suffering from non-psychotic depressive disorders within various clinical and nosological forms (F31-F34 mood disorders and F60.31-emotionally unstable personality disorder). Clinical and psychological features were presented, as well as predictors of suicidal risk in patients of these groups. We performed a comparative analysis of the anxiety and depression level, the level of mental pain, fear of death and the severity of anti-suicidal motives in patients with affective disorders and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Based on the results, 10

OBJECTIVE: We investigated mortality and its determinants in people with psychotic disorder.
METHODS: A nationally representative two-stage cluster sample of 8028 persons aged 30 years or older from Finland was selected for a comprehensive health survey conducted from 2000 to 2001. Participants were screened for psychotic disorder, and screen-positive persons were invited for a Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. The diagnostic assessment of DSM-IV psychotic disorders was based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, case records from mental health treatments, or both. Mortalit

A group of patients (n=48) with a manifestation of depressive schizoaffective disorder (SAD) (F25.1 ICD-10) was studied. The considerable frequency (79.2%) of pre-manifest affective disorders, which preceded the development of psychosis in overwhelming majority of cases (81.6%), was found. In accordance with the modality of the affect, pre-manifest affective disorders were attributed to depression (60.5%), bipolar affective disorder (31.6%), with dual phases, or, more rarely, with continuous course, and hypomania (7.9%). The considerable frequency (47.9%) of hypomania, bipolar disorder, mixed

Although reactive (psychogenic) psychoses have no doubt occurred throughout the history of mankind, it is only during the last century that the corresponding concept has been defined, beginning with Sommer's definition of the term 'psychogenic' and Jaspers' distinctions between 'reaction' and 'process', and between 'neurosis' and 'psychosis', respectively. A change in Kurt Schneider's nosological concepts induced the majority of German-speaking psychiatrists to avoid the concept of psychogenic psychoses. The very varying use of the concept of reactive psychoses in different countries is descri

INTRODUCTION: Recent research postulated that temperaments represent the subclinical foundations of affective disorders, and an early clue for a recurrent, prebipolar disorder. Akiskal et al. operationalized five types of temperaments: depressive, hyperthymic, irritable, cyclothymic and anxious. The aims of this study were to compare the affective temperaments scores in patients with bipolar I, II and recurrent depression disorders and to explore the relation between temperaments scores and clinical features of those affective disorders.
METHODS: This was a comparative cross-sectional study,

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to evaluate whether the pattern of schizophrenia and related disorders in probands and their relatives can be explained by a single underlying continuum of liability to the "schizophrenia spectrum."
METHOD: In the epidemiologically based Roscommon Family Study, the authors separately examined--in siblings, parents, and relatives of index and comparison probands--the familial aggregation and coaggregation of five hierarchically defined disorders: schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizotypal/paranoid personality disorder, other nonaffective psychoses, and p

BACKGROUND: Validity of current International Classification of Disease/Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (ICD/DSM) first episode psychosis diagnoses is essential in clinical practice, research, training and public health.
METHOD: We provide a meta-analytical estimate of prospective diagnostic stability and instability in ICD-10 or DSM-IV first episode diagnoses of functional psychoses. Independent extraction by multiple observers. Random effect meta-analysis conducted with the "metaprop," "metaninf," "metafunnel," "metabias," and "metareg" packages of STATA13.1. Moderator

IMPORTANCE: There is limited neurobiological or trial evidence guiding treatment of comorbid affective syndromes in psychotic disorders. Given the use of dopamine-blocking antipsychotics, understanding dopamine function across these mood states is warranted.
OBJECTIVE: To test for differences in dopamine synthesis capacity (Kicer) between affective syndromes across psychotic disorders and for association with psychotic symptom severity.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study using fluorine F 18-labeled fluorodopa (18F-DOPA) positron emission tomography (PET), indivi

This review describes the growing research in virtual reality (VR) for healthcare purposes. In recent years, the technological improvements have expanded the possibility of investigating VR in diagnostics as well as treatment of mental and behavioural disorders. The existing literature regarding phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, addiction, psychotic, eating and affective disorders is summarised and discussed in terms of clinical applicability.

COVID-19 is a systemic disease. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been increasing reports of neuropsychiatric complications of the infection. The excessive inflammatory response during the infection induces changes in neurotransmission, which can result in nonspecific manifestations of affective and psychotic disorders, among other symptoms. We present descriptions of two cases involving previously untreated psychiatric patients, in whom the first-episode psychosis occurred immediately after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The commonality between both cases, besides the preceding SARS-CoV-

Longitudinal assessment of the course of major psychiatric disorders has been advanced by studies from onset, but only rarely have large numbers of patients with a range of psychotic and major affective disorders been studied simultaneously and systematically from illness-onset. The decade-long McLean-Harvard First Episode Project & International Consortium for Bipolar Disorder Research has systematically followed-up large numbers of patients with DSM-IV bipolar or psychotic disorders from first-hospitalization. Major findings among patients with bipolar I disorder include: [a] full functional

BACKGROUND: Structural brain abnormalities are prevalent in patients with schizophrenia and affective disorders.
AIMS: To study how regional brain volumes and their ratios differ between patients with schizophrenia, psychotic depression, severe non-psychotic depression and healthy controls.
METHOD: Magnetic resonance imaging scans of the brain on first-episode patients and on healthy controls.
RESULTS: Patients with schizophrenia had a smaller left frontal grey matter volume than the other three groups. Patients with psychotic depression had larger ventricular and posterior sulcal cerebrosp

Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) contribute significantly to mental disorders. While existing research has primarily focused on specific diagnostic categories, a comprehensive understanding of how childhood trauma interacts with biological factors, symptom severity and functioning requires a broader perspective. Therefore, this study adopted a cross-diagnostic approach to examine the impact of ACE on quality of life (QoL), psychosocial functioning, and symptom burden by analyzing data from the PsyCourse Study, a longitudinal, multicenter research project conducted in Germany and Austria. BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: There is mounting evidence that cardiac interoception, the perception of one's heartbeat, is central to affective experiences. It has been proposed that symptoms of psychosis could arise from interoceptive dysfunction. Here we hypothesized that people with psychotic disorders would have a specific impairment in cardiac interoception, over and above broader perceptual deficits.
STUDY DESIGN: 43 adults with a history of psychosis (31 schizophrenia, 12 schizoaffective disorder) and 41 matched control participants completed a heart rate discrimination task. Participants

Paranoid symptoms were found in 40% of patients admitted to a university general hospital psychiatric unit during a ten-month period. Fifty-eight percent of this group had frank paranoid delusions, while the rest had ideas of reference or generalized suspiciousness. Only one half of those who had paranoid delusions had paranoid schizophrenia. A significant number had affective disorders or organic brain disorder. Ideas of reference and suspiciousness were found in many patients who were not psychotic. The therapeutic implications of these findings are reported in three patients who were inadeq

BACKGROUND: Psychosis is a prominent characteristic of manic episodes. We investigated relationships between the presence of psychotic features, the severity of the manic syndrome, and syndrome severity's response to treatment.
METHOD: 179 subjects meeting Research Diagnostic Criteria for a manic episode of bipolar I disorder were hospitalized for acute manic episodes and treated in a randomized trial of lithium, divalproex sodium, or placebo. Factor and cluster analyses were carried out using the clinician-rated Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia, Change version (SADS-C) and

Compared mental health characteristics of island Puerto Ricans to three groups from the Los Angeles Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study: Mexican American immigrants, U.S.-born Mexican Americans, and Non-Hispanic whites. The Diagnostic Interview Schedule was used to obtain both diagnostic and symptom scale information about affective disorders, alcohol abuse/dependence, somatization, phobic disorder, and psychotic disorder. Mexican American immigrants had the fewest mental health problems of all groups. Puerto Ricans had more somatization disorder, but less affective and alcohol disorders than U

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are linked to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and often precede the onset of manifest illness. Psychotic experiences and mental disorders during childhood are risk factors for later development of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This study investigated whether nightmares, prolonged sleep latency, and nocturnal awakenings are associated with psychotic experiences and mental disorder in children at familial high risk of schizophrenia (FHR-SZ) or bipolar disorder (FHR-BP) and population-based controls (controls).
METHOD: The study included 447 eleven-twelve-year-

Micro RNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role as regulators of various biological processes and have been implicated in the pathogenesis of mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. In this study, we investigate the expression patterns of miRNAs in the PsyCourse Study (n = 1786), contrasting three broad diagnostic groups: Psychotic (Schizophrenia-spectrum disorders), Affective (Bipolar Disorder I, II and recurrent Depression), and neurotypic healthy individuals. Through comprehensive analyses, including differential miRNA expression, miRNA transcriptome-wide association study (TW
