INTRODUCTION: The co-existence phenomenon of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), particularly of last-resort antibiotics in multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria, is of particular concern in the least studied bacterial species.
METHODS: In 2023, strain M2 was isolated from the sludge sample at a commercial bovine farm in Hebei province, China, using a MacConkey plate containing meropenem. PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing verified it co-carrying bla NDM and tet(X) genes. It was classified within the Acinetobacter genus by MALDI-TOF-MS and 16S rDNA analyses. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) w

The development of sensitive surveillance technologies using PCR-based detection of microbial DNA, such as the reverse line blot assay, can facilitate the gathering of epidemiological information on tick-borne diseases, which continue to hamper the productivity of livestock in many parts of Africa and elsewhere. We have employed a reverse line blot assay to detect the prevalence of tick-borne parasites in an intensively studied cohort of indigenous calves in western Kenya. The calves were recruited close to birth and monitored for the presence of infectious disease for up to 51 weeks. The fina

Smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa face increasing vulnerability to climate variability, yet their adaptive responses remain uneven and poorly understood across different agroecological zones. This study investigates rural farmers' perceptions and adaptation strategies to climate risks, along with their determinants, in the Migori River watershed, Kenya. Data from 318 randomly sampled households were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression to examine the factors influencing climate change perceptions, coping mechanisms, and adaptation strategies.

Garri is a granular, starchy food prepared by the fermentation of mashed cassava. Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and mycotoxins are contaminants in certain foods at different points along the food value chain. The incidence and contamination levels of HCN and multi-mycotoxins in garri from five agroecological zones of Nigeria were determined using a spectrophotometric method and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (UHPLC-MS/MS), respectively. The health risk associated with the consumption of contaminated garri was assessed. The health risk assessment model was used t

China is the world's second-largest maize producer and consumer. In recent years, the invasive fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) has adversely affected maize productivity and compromised food security. To mitigate pest-inflicted food shortages, China's Government issued biosafety certificates for two genetically modified (GM) Bt maize hybrids, Bt-Cry1Ab DBN9936 and Bt-Cry1Ab/Cry2Aj Ruifeng 125, in 2019. Here, we quantitatively assess the impact of both Bt maize hybrids on pest feeding damage, crop yield and food safety throughout China's maize belt. Without a need to resort to s

Recent viral zoonotic epidemics have been attributed partially to the negative impact of human activities on ecosystem biodiversity. Agricultural activities, particularly conventional crop protection (CP) practices, are a major threat to global biodiversity, ecosystem health and human health. Here we review interactions between CP practices and viral zoonoses (VZs), the first time this has been done. It should be noted that a) VZs stand at the interface between human, animal and ecosystem health; b) some VZs involve arthropod vectors that are affected by CP practices; and c) some crop pests, o

Arsenic bioavailability in rock, soil and water resources is notoriously hazardous. Geogenic arsenic enters the body and adversely affects many biochemical processes in animals and humans, posing risk to public health. Chelpu is located in NE Iran, where realgar, orpiment and pyrite mineralization is the source of arsenic in the macroenvironment. Using cluster random sampling strategy eight rocks, 23 soils, 12 drinking water resources, 36 human urine and hair samples and 15 adult sheep urine and wool samples in several large-scale herds in the area were randomly taken for quantification of ars

BACKGROUND: In rural areas, goat farming is essential for maintaining livelihoods by ensuring income generation and enhancing agricultural resilience globally. However, the productivity of small ruminant systems is significantly affected by parasitic infections from gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs), particularly in regions where extensive production systems dominate.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and infection intensity of GIN parasites and associated risk factors in goats in the Humbo District of Southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study e

Grasslands cover nearly 40% of the terrestrial surface and support essential ecosystem services, yet their biodiversity, productivity, and stability are increasingly threatened by climate extremes, land use change, and disruption of biogeochemical cycles in the Anthropocene. Nitrogen (N) limitation is a primary constraint on grassland functioning, and incorporation of N-fixing legumes can alleviate this limitation. However, system outcomes depend less on legume presence alone than on the balance achieved among grass and legume functional groups. Here, we present a conceptual synthesis integrat

Understanding how crop breeding alters plant resource-use strategies is essential for improving yield formation in increasingly variable climates. Although the plant economics spectrum is widely used to describe plant functional strategies in natural ecosystems, its applicability to intensively bred crop species remains unclear. This study compared four traditional landraces released before the 1950s and four modern naked oat cultivars released after the 2000s in a field experiment conducted in Yunnan, China, during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. Modern cultivars exhibited a partial shift

Background: Manure-amended agricultural soil is a critical reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing escalating threats to environmental health and food safety. However, the temporal trajectories of ARG prevalence throughout the complete reproductive cycle of cash crops, and their mechanistic linkages with fertilization regimes and microbial community succession, remain inadequately understood. Methods: To bridge this knowledge gap, we conducted an in situ field experiment over the entire growth period of Chinese cabbage at a long-term manure-amended farm in Tianjin, China. Six c

Potato common scab (PCS) is caused by various Streptomyces spp., which seriously affect the quality and economic value of potatoes. Different species of pathogens may affect disease control strategies due to their biological characteristics. To determine pathogen composition in the major potato production area, northern China, potato tubers with various types of PCS symptoms were collected from 18 counties. From 57 collected samples, 159 bacterial isolates of Streptomyces spp. were obtained on oatmeal agar. Pathogenicity of these isolates was examined on tuber disks and potted plants of potato

BACKGROUND: Long-term natural and artificial selection has resulted in many genetic footprints within the genomes of pig breeds across distinct agroecological zones. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which these signatures contribute to phenotypic diversity and facilitate environmental adaptation remain unclear.
RESULTS: Here, we leveraged whole-genome sequencing data from 82 individuals from 6 domestic pig breeds originating in tropical, high-altitude, and frigid regions. Population genetic analysis suggested that habitat isolation significantly shaped the genetic diversity and contributed to

Beetroots are increasingly recognized as a functional food; however, the extent to which different farming practices influence their primary nutrients, including minerals, sugars, and protein, and secondary metabolites, including phenolics, betalains, and nitrates, remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we analyzed fresh beetroot (Beta vulgaris) samples collected from a conventional, organic, and Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC™) farm (n = 12 per farming system) in Southwest Oregon, USA, along with beetroot powder from five commercially available brands samples (n = 6 samples per
