Aircraft-level vibration effects on hyperfine laser locks for Rydberg electric-field sensing.

We present a subsystem-isolated study of aircraft-level vibration coupling to a hyperfine laser lock and its propagation to a two-photon Rydberg superheterodyne RF sensor. Here, the probe laser is stabilized to an atomic hyperfine transition, and RF electric fields are detected via a Rydberg-atom superheterodyne process that down-converts the signal to an optical readout. A compact Doppler-free saturated-absorption spectroscopy (SAS) module probing the 87Rb5S1/2→5P3/2 hyperfine manifold was driven to NASA DC-8 in-flight vibration levels (<2kHz) to investigate the effects of vibration on the st

Coordinated satellite, aircraft, and ground-based observations of a large transient methane release.

We present the results of a Very Large Methane Release (VLMR) experiment evaluating methane retrievals from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) Advanced Baseline Imagers (ABIs) and multiple low-Earth-orbit satellite instruments with high point-source detection thresholds. The experiment coordinated observations of a US gas pipeline blowdown with nine satellites, an aircraft, and a truck-based mobile laboratory. We used the GOES-16, -18, and -19 ABIs with revisits every 10 min to 7 s to quantify release magnitude and associated uncertainty. Best methane retrieval preci

Development of a 3D Eulerian/Lagrangian Aircraft Icing Simulation Solver Based on OpenFOAM.

A 3D icing simulation code is developed in the open-source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM. A hybrid Cartesian/body-fitted meshing method is used to generate high-quality meshes around complex ice shapes. Steady-state 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are solved to provide the ensemble-averaged flow around the airfoil. Considering the multi-scale nature of droplet size distribution, and more importantly, to represent the less uniform nature of the Super-cooled Large Droplets (SLD), two droplet tracking methods are realized: the Eulerian method is used to track the small-size droplets (b

Disinfection of aircraft : Appropriate disinfectants and standard operating procedures for highly infectious diseases.

For infectious diseases caused by highly pathogenic agents (e. g., Ebola/Lassa fever virus, SARS-/MERS-CoV, pandemic influenza virus) which have the potential to spread over several continents within only a few days, international Health Protection Authorities have taken appropriate measures to limit the consequences of a possible spread. A crucial point in this context is the disinfection of an aircraft that had a passenger on board who is suspected of being infected with one of the mentioned diseases. Although, basic advice on hygiene and sanitation on board an aircraft is given by the World

Analysis of 2004 German general aviation aircraft accidents according to the HFACS model.

INTRODUCTION: The number of aircraft accidents remains on a constant level since the late 1990s. Routine analysis in detail of the causative factors is not carried out in Germany. The analysis of flight mishaps has been demonstrated to be an important basis for flight safety. The Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) model is best suitable for aircraft accident analysis. The aim of this study was to classify aircraft accidents in the General Aviation (GA) of Germany according to the HFACS model and to figure out the underlying causes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis was

A case of infectious tuberculosis on two long-haul aircraft flights: contact investigation.

AIM: During a five-week period in 1996, a passenger with highly infectious tuberculosis travelled on five long-haul aircraft flights. We investigated passengers and crew on two of these flights to identify whether transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis had occurred. METHODS: Crew and passengers were identified from airline and immigration records. Contacts were notified of their exposure and invited to attend their local public health clinic. At the clinic, a questionnaire was administered by a public health worker, and a Mantoux skin test was performed. When indicated, a second test was

Research on the design of non-destructive assembly and disassembly interference fit for aircraft engines.

The temperature difference method is used for the assembly and disassembly of cylindrical interference fit in aircraft engines, which is prone to causing scratches on the contact surfaces. To improve maintainability, this study optimized the design of a conical interference fit with an oil groove, which not only maintains torque transmission capability comparable to that of the prototype but also achieves non-destructive assembly and disassembly. The similarity criteria for the torque transmission capacity of interference fit and the design requirements for taper were derived, forming a design

The effectiveness of disinfection and flushing procedures to prevent coliform persistence in aircraft water systems.

A full-scale reproduction of an aircraft drinking water system was conditioned using municipal tap water with a mixture of free chlorine and chloramines, and subsequently contaminated with coliforms. Disinfection was undertaken using chlorine dioxide, ozone and a mixed oxidant solution followed by flushing until no disinfectant residual remained. Results showed that coliforms were not persistent on the aircraft plumbing surfaces, and coliforms were not detected after disinfection and flushing with any disinfectant. The one exception was the aerator installed in the lavatory faucet, which was c

CO2, NOx, and particle emissions from aircraft and support activities at a regional airport.

The goal of this research was to quantify emissions of carbon dioxide (CO(2)), nitrogen oxides (NO(x)), particle number, and black carbon (BC) from in-use aircraft and related activity at a regional airport. Pollutant concentrations were measured adjacent to the airfield and passenger terminal at the Roanoke Regional Airport in Virginia. Observed NO(x) emission indices (EIs) for jet-powered, commuter aircraft were generally lower than those contained in the International Civil Aviation Organization databank for both taxi (same as idle) and takeoff engine settings. NO(x) EIs ranged from 1.9 to

[Characteristics of a negative effect of aviation noise on hearing organ of aircraft maintenance personnel].

Otolaryngological examination was carried out of 80 engineers and technicians engaged in maintenance of aircrafts in the airports. They are continuously exposed to occupational aviation noise and therefore are at risk for chronic neurosensory hypoacusis. Pure tone audiogram registers in them a rise in hearing thresholds throughout the whole band of frequencies studied. This means that aviation maintenance staff is exposed to noise containing highly intensive infrasound and high-frequency components. The detected pathology directly correlated with duration of exposure to noise. Development of n

On the origin of susceptibility to kinetotic swimming behaviour in fish: a parabolic aircraft flight study.

Humans taking part in parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) may suffer from motion sickness (SMS, a kinetosis; it comprises a dynamic and a static component). It has been argued that the so-called static variety of SMS during PAFs might be based on asymmetric statoliths (i.e., differently weighed statoliths on the right and the left side of the head), with asymmetric inputs to the brain being disclosed in microgravity. Since it has been repeatedly shown earlier that some fish of a given batch reveal a kinetotic behaviour during PAFs (especially so-called spinning movements and looping responses),

Aircraft disinsecting: the effectiveness of Freon-based and water-based phenothrin and permethrin aerosols.

In Miami, Florida, USA, passenger compartments of jet aircraft were disinsected at "blocks away". An application of a 20 g/litre Freon-based or water-based permethrin formulation at 35 mg of aerosol per 100 m(3) was 100% effective against caged mosquitos and flies. The flammability hazard of the sprays from water-based hydrocarbon aerosols was evaluated.

Tolerance driven lightweight design and interface robustness of multi material aircraft horizontal tail structures.

This study addresses the challenge of balancing weight reduction with stiffness in aircraft horizontal tails by proposing a multi-material design strategy combining carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) spars, closed-cell foam cores, and aluminum alloy joints. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model was developed to quantitatively assess how manufacturing tolerances—specifically variations in adhesive layer thickness and foam core density—affect interfacial mechanical performance. The co-optimized structure achieved a single-wing mass of 17.8 kg, representing a 32% reduction compar

Military jet pilots have higher p-wave dispersions compared to the transport aircraft aircrew.

OBJECTIVES: For the purpose of flight safety military aircrew must be healthy. P-wave dispersion (PWD) is the p-wave length difference in an electrocardiographic (ECG) examination and represents the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. In the study we aimed at investigating PWD in healthy military aircrew who reported for periodical examinations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-five asymptomatic military aircrew were enrolled in the study. All the subjects underwent physical, radiologic and biochemical examinations, and a 12-lead electrocardiography. P-wave dispersions were calculated. RESU

Spinal fractures associated with ejection from jet aircraft: two case reports and a review.

Virtually any A&E department in the UK may see aircrew who have ejected. The case histories of two pilots who ejected and sustained spinal fractures are presented. Both had minimal back symptoms and walked from the site of landing. All ejectees should be considered to have a spinal fracture until proven otherwise radiographically. Other injuries that these patients may sustain during ejection are also discussed.
