Significant morphological but little molecular differences between Trypanosoma of rodents from Alaska.

We examined blood smears of 173 rodents and 33 shrews captured at 4 sites in the Gates of the Arctic National Park, northern Alaska, in summer 2002. Trypanosoma spp. were detected in the plasma of 5 Microtus oeconomus, 4 Microtus miurus, and 1 Lemmus trimucronatus. The trypomastigote morphology from different individuals of M. oeconomus caught at the same site and of M. miurus from different sites varied significantly. The 4 DNA sequences obtained from the blood smear positive samples contained 2 different haplotypes very similar to each other and to that of Trypanosoma microti. Of possible ve

Presentation and treatment of asthma among native children in southwest Alaska delta.

Our objective was to determine if a different presentation of asthma among Eskimo children in southwest Alaska influenced treatment for asthma. Data regarding symptoms, medication use, and hospitalization were obtained from the medical records of 58 Eskimo children diagnosed with asthma. Half of the children also had a diagnosis of chronic lung disease (CLD), and 57% had a history of allergies. CLD was associated with significantly more visits for wheeze (P=0.02), asthma (P <0.005), and lower respiratory tract illnesses (P <0.005), and a greater incidence (P <0.005) and frequency (P <0.005) of

"Tied together like a woven hat:" Protective pathways to Alaska native sobriety.

BACKGROUND: The People Awakening Project (1RO1 AA 11446-03) had two purposes, completed in Phase I and Phase II of the project. The purpose of Phase I was to complete a qualitative study; the research objective was discovery oriented with the specific aim of identification of protective and recovery factors in Alaska Native sobriety. Results were used to develop a heuristic model of protective and recovery factors, and measures based on these factors. The research objective of Phase II was to pilot these measures and provide initial validity data. METHODS: Phase I utilized a life history metho

Traumatic brain injury among American Indians/Alaska Natives--United States, 1992-1996.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, resulting in approximately 52,000 deaths, 230,000 hospitalizations, and 80,000 disabilities annually. Among American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs), injuries are the second leading cause of death; however, few published reports concern nonfatal injuries in this population, especially for injuries such as TBI. To describe the causes and impact of TBI among AI/ANs, CDC analyzed Indian Health Service (IHS) hospital discharge data. This report summarizes the results of this analysis, which indicate that

First Report of Barley yellow streak mosaic virus-Infected Barley in Alaska.

Barley yellow streak mosaic virus (BaYSMV) was first described and reported in Montana and Alberta, Canada, more than 17 years ago (1). Since then, it has been detected in two other locations: Pocatello Valley, ID (3), and across the border in Utah. BaYSMV has now been found in the Alaskan interior. In July 1999, dry-land barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) growing in University of Alaska-Fairbanks experimental plots exhibited symptoms similar to those described for BaYSMV, including parallel chlorotic streaks and leaf banding. Mechanical inoculation of Nicotiana benthamiana with diseased barley sap p

Prevalence of Trichinella nativa in lynx (Felis lynx) from Alaska, 1988-1993.

Lynx (Felis lynx) carcasses were collected during the 1989 to 1990 through 1992 to 1993 trapping seasons in Alaska (USA). Seven areas were represented. Tongue samples were removed from 1,065 carcasses. Specimens were examined for the presence of Trichinella nativa larvae by means of enzymatic digestion. Overall prevalence was 21%. Both prevalence and number of larvae per gram of host tissue were directly related to age of the host. Age-specific prevalence ranged from 4% for kittens up to 59% for lynx 5 yr of age and older. For infected lynx, intensity ranged from 0.27 larvae per gram of host t

Use of capture-recapture analyses in fetal alcohol syndrome surveillance in Alaska.

Capture-recapture methods were used to estimate the prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome among Alaska Natives born during the period 1982-1989. Potential cases were identified through an Indian Health Service (IHS) patient case file, a pediatric practice case file, and Medicaid claims from private physicians. A total of 74 Alaska Native children aged 3-10 years were identified with a notation of fetal alcohol syndrome by a physician in a medical record. Because not all of these cases had supporting documentation regarding the syndrome, they were classified as possible cases. Of these possible

Injuries associated with three-wheeled, all-terrain vehicles, Alaska, 1983 and 1984.

From January 1983 through December 1984, twenty deaths and at least 534 injuries in Alaska were associated with three-wheeled, all-terrain vehicles. Age at death ranged from 12 to 53 years; 15 deaths (75%) were in the 15- to 34-year age group. Of the 20 fatalities, 12 (60%) might have been prevented had the riders been wearing a helmet. Alcohol use was detected or highly suspected as the major contributing cause of the fatal crash for 12 of 15 drivers and three of five female passengers. Potential risk factors for injuries associated with all-terrain vehicles include alcohol use, failure to us

Six Cases of Borealpox and Evidence of a Zoonotic Source: Alaska, 2020-2023.

BACKGROUND: Borealpox virus (previously known as Alaskapox virus) is an Orthopoxvirus species first identified in a patient living near Fairbanks, Alaska, in 2015; the source of the patient's infection was unknown. Six additional borealpox cases have been identified through 2023. METHODS: We conducted interviews to ascertain travel history and potential exposures for the six patients, trapped small mammals for orthopoxvirus testing, and performed a phylogenetic analysis of viral DNA sequences. RESULTS: Five patients had similar clinical illness, consisting of at least one lesion and, in most

Cancer Education in the Northwest Arctic: Empowering Youth on Cancer in Rural Alaska.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Alaska and the second leading cause of death in the USA, even though the most common cancers are largely preventable through screening and lifestyle changes. Consequently, interventions that promote sustainable behavioral change can reduce existing health disparities in cancer morbidity and mortality. In 2019, community sharing circles inspired the creation of a cancer education project for youth in the Northwest Arctic region of Alaska. We grounded the work in community-based participatory action research (CBPR), empowerment theory, and Indigenous ways

Genomic Diversity of Haemophilus influenzae Serotype a in an Outbreak Community-Alaska, 2018.

BACKGROUND: Haemophilus influenzae serotype a (Hia) can cause severe invasive disease, especially in young children. In 2018, 4 invasive Hia cases occurred in an Alaska community. We used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to evaluate the relationship of the bacteria from this community and other Alaska patients with invasive Hia. METHODS: All carriage (n = 15) and invasive (n = 4) Hia isolates from the outbreak community, together with 15 nonoutbreak Alaska invasive Hia surveillance isolates from 2018, were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility and characterized using WGS. RESULTS: Phylogeneti

The Effect of Tobacco Use on the Expression of Placental Transporters in Alaska Native Women.

Prenatal tobacco use among Alaska Native (AN) women has decreased substantially over the past two decades. Previous research suggests that providing AN women with feedback regarding fetal exposure to tobacco may further promote cessation. Transporters in the placenta regulate fetal exposure to nutrients and xenobiotics, including compounds associated with tobacco use. We examined whether prenatal tobacco use impacts transporter expression in the placenta, and whether this is influenced by fetal sex, degree of tobacco exposure, or transporter genotype. At delivery, we obtained placental samples

Timing of Infections in the Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) by Schistocephalus solidus in Alaska.

This study provides direct evidence for the timing of infections by Schistocephalus solidus in the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) of south-central Alaska. Young-of-the-year fish in Cheney Lake were infected during their first summer within a few months after hatching in May-June. Infections appear to continue under ice cover on the lake during the subsequent fall and winter. Few, if any, 1-yr-old fish seemed to be infected for the first time, although 1-yr-old hosts with established parasites apparently acquired additional infections.

Reproductive biology of the Alaska skate Bathyraja parmifera, with comments on an intersexual individual.

A total of 1357 specimens of Alaska skate Bathyraja parmifera were collected in the eastern Bering Sea by fisheries observers and during scientific groundfish surveys from 2003 to 2005. Male and female gonads were examined for maturity stage and seasonal reproductive timing. Based on seasonal reproductive data, including the occurrence of egg cases, ovum size, ovum number, shell-gland width and gonado-somatic index, this species appears to reproduce continually throughout the year. Potential effects of maternal size upon the size and number of mature oocytes were also investigated, with total
