A high herd and within-herd prevalence of Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) infections in the dairy herds of North America and the negative effects thereof caused the Alberta dairy industry to initiate the development of an on farm BLV control program. Because BLV control is dependent on the commitment of the farmer, potential barriers were identified and farmers' and veterinarians' points of view toward different control options were investigated to inform how the control program might be adjusted. Conversations with these stakeholders were sought and four focus groups with farmers and eleven inter

ABSTRACTThe geographic range and occurrence of tick species is dynamic. This has important public health implications due to important tick species that can transmit pathogens. This study presents a retrospective review of tick genera recovered from humans and submitted for identification in Alberta, Canada, over a 19-year period. The total number of ticks and proportion of genera were analyzed over time. Molecular testing for a number of pathogens associated with Ixodes scapularis and I. pacificus was conducted. A total of 2,358 ticks were submitted between 2000 and 2019, with 98.6% being acq

Background: Biliary tract cancers (BTC) are uncommon malignancies and are underrepresented in the literature. Methods: We performed a retrospective population-based review of adult patients with biopsy-confirmed BTC in Alberta from 2000 to 2015. Demographic data, risk factors, symptoms, treatment, and staging data were collected and analyzed. Survival analyses were completed. Results: A total of 1604 patients were included in our study, of which 766 (47.8%) were male. The median age at diagnosis was 68 (range 19-99). There were 374 (23.3%) patients with resectable tumors at diagnosis versus 59

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed primary care (PC), and policies aimed at integrating it into provincial health systems, to a "shock test." This paper draws on documentary analysis and qualitative interviews with PC and health system stakeholders to examine shifts in Alberta's pre-pandemic PC integration model during the first nine months of the pandemic. We begin with an account of three elements of the province's pre-pandemic model: finance, health authority activity and community activity. We describe these elements as they shifted, focusing on two indicators of change: novel virtual care bill

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis is an obligate intra-granulocytic parasite that is transmitted by Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus in North America. We report on the second laboratory-confirmed case of Anaplasma phagocytophilum acquired within the province of Alberta, Canada. A 67-year-old woman from the Edmonton health zone developed nonspecific systemic symptoms including fatigue, night sweats, myalgia, headaches, and fever 6 days after noticing a tick on her left upper arm in May of 2017 (day 0). On day 13, she was found to have thrombocytopenia. Her symptoms progressed until day 16 w

One of the largest wildfires in Canadian history raged through northern Alberta in May to July 2016, and prompted the largest emergency air evacuation in Canadian history. Central to the challenges were the evacuation of a regional hospital, and the emergency and recovery management associated with healthcare services. This paper describes multiple phases of emergency and recovery management, which employed and adapted the Incident Command System to healthcare services. There were no injuries reported throughout the medical evacuation and recovery of medical services. The leadership and manage

A widespread outbreak of enterovirus (EV)-D68 that started in the summer of 2014 has been reported in the USA and Canada. During the course of this outbreak, EV-D68 was identified as a possible cause of acute, unexplained severe respiratory illness and a temporal association was observed between acute flaccid paralysis with anterior myelitis and EV-D68 detection in the upper respiratory tract. In this study, four nasopharyngeal samples collected from patients in Alberta, Canada with a laboratory diagnosis of EV-D68 were used to determine the near full-length genome sequence directly from the s

We report myiasis by Lucilia silvarum with an overall prevalence of 0.9% in amphibian populations in boreal Alberta. In the period 1998--1999, we documented L. silvarum infestations in wild populations of wood frog (Rana sylvatica), boreal chorus frog (Pseudacris maculata), boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas), and Canadian toad (B. hemiophrys). We believe this is the first record of this parasite from boreal and Canadian toads. Almost all previous records of L. silvarum parasitism in North America indicate that myiasis is fatal to an anuran host. Here, we provide the first record of adult individ

Heads of 64 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawns, harvested in the vicinity of Magrath, Alberta, Canada, (49 degrees 24'782''N, 112 degrees 52'113''W) were examined for the presence of nasal bots and lice. The deer were collected between 8-30 January 2004 as part of a government-approved herd reduction protocol. The entire surface of each head was scanned visually for the presence of lice. Each head was split longitudinally, and the nasal passages, sinuses, and ethmoid region were washed for recovery of nasal bots. First instar Cephenemyia spp. were recovered from 17 heads (27%). I

We determined the incidence of invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) disease among children < or =14 years of age in Alberta, Canada, with a focus on infections associated with varicella. During 2000-2002, there were 71 cases of invasive GAS disease among patients in this age group. Fourteen cases occurred in children with varicella (19.7%), for an annual incidence of 0.73 varicella-associated cases per 100,000 children. Necrotizing fasciitis was not noted in patients with invasive GAS disease and varicella.

BACKGROUND: Vision degrading mydesposiae (VDM) can have a significant impact on a patient's quality of life. Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a surgical modality used to treat a variety of vitreoretinal diseases and is an accessible treatment option for relief of VDM. This article analyzes outcomes and postoperative complications in a large, local sample of patients who have undergone PPV for symptomatic floaters from a northern Alberta perspective.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at Alberta Retina Consultants in Edmonton, Alberta. Patients who underwent PPV for VDM between

Background: Dry powders offer the potential to increase stability and reduce cold-chain requirements associated with the distribution of vaccines and other thermally sensitive products. The Alberta Idealized Nasal Inlet (AINI) is a representative geometry for in vitro characterization of nasal products that may prove useful in examining intranasal delivery of powders. Methods: Spray-dried trehalose powders were loaded at 10, 20, and 40 mg doses into active single-dose devices. Primary particle sizes (∼Dv50 = 10 µm for powder A and 25 µm for powder B), and sizes dispersed by devices, were evalu

BACKGROUND: Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common malignancy affecting Caucasian populations and has been seeing steady increases in incidence globally for decades. Our previous study (from Alberta, Canada) had shown a plateau in the incidence rates for NMSC. This contrasts with data from other regions within Canada and throughout the world that indicated a continued increase in incidence rates of NMSCs.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to provide an update on the trends in incidence of NMSC in Alberta, Canada, from 2007 to 2018.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of pa

A retrospective 5-year province-wide evaluation of prenatal Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) screening in Alberta, Canada, was carried out to assess compliance with the provincial recommendations for universal prenatal screening as a prevention for neonatal ophthalmia. Screening generally improved across the province each year, 82.1% in 2018 and reaching 87.3% in 2022. Women in the age group under 25 years were the most likely to not have the recommended first-trimester screening and demonstrated the highest prevalence of GC and CT infections. The results of this inves
