Temporal variation in deaths related to alcohol intoxication and drinking.

BACKGROUND: Temporal variation in deaths related to alcohol intoxication is examined using two approaches. First, we examine the risk of these deaths during festivals, on the day preceding them, and on the three days that immediately follow them. Second, we assess the weekday variation in deaths, and compare this with survey-based data on weekday variations in drinking. Previously no data existed on the temporal association between intoxication-related deaths and drinking occasions according to the severity of intoxication. METHODS: We used population registration data on 15-69-year-old men a

Alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking: a "partner" for gastric ulceration.

Alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking are two etiologic factors that have a close relationship with peptic ulcer diseases. Chronic active gastritis is reportedly associated with chronic alcohol ingestion. Nonetheless, the inflammatory changes are likely to be related to concurrent Helicobacter pylori infection that is common among alcoholics. Moreover, chronic alcoholism is also correlated with the presence of gastric metaplasia. Both clinically and experimentally, alcohol had been shown to affect the mucosal barrier and histology. These ulcerogenic effects play a crucial role in altering

Drinking outcomes of alcohol abusers diagnosed as antisocial personality disorder.

Clinical research and wisdom suggest that alcoholics with antisocial personality (ASPs) disorders have poorer drinking outcomes after treatment than alcoholics without this disorder. The present study challenges this wisdom, suggesting that poor prognosis and response to treatment have been confounded by not covarying on pretreatment drinking measures. Thirty-one ASPs are compared with 118 non-ASPs randomly assigned to extended cognitive behavioral and relationship enhancement treatments. Thirteen to 18 months after treatment initiation, ASPs average more abstinent days than do non-ASPs. Drink

Alcohol expectancy and the relationship between drinking and physical aggression.

This study investigated the role of alcohol expectancy as a moderator of the relationship between drinking habits and self-reported frequency of physical aggression. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of 114 American male college students. After controlling for the subjects' ages, hostility, and attitude toward aggression, the relationship between drinking habits and frequency of physical aggression was significantly stronger for those expecting alcohol to increase aggression than for those expecting either a decrease or no effect on aggression. This finding lends support to expectan

Organic mental disorders associated with heavy drinking and alcohol dependence.

Wernicke and Korsakoff first described their respective syndromes in the late nineteenth century, and they were linked to each other and to thiamine deficiency by the 1940s. Korsakoff's syndrome (alcohol amnestic disorder) became almost synonymous with alcohol-related organic mental disorder because of the apparent simplicity of its manifestations and pathology, while other, more diffuse cerebral dysfunction was relegated to the poorly defined term alcoholic dementia. Work in neuropsychology, pathology, and imaging studies during the last 15 years has resulted in a new understanding of the int

[Social psychological and sociocultural aspects of alcohol drinking and alcoholic intoxication behind the wheel].

The paper deals with socio-psychological and socio-cultural problems of drunken driving and of alcohol-consumption in general. It is the intention to make evident how the way to show a certain behavior is imbedded in more comprehensive conditions. The contradictory relations between the role of individual traffic and of alcohol consumption in a society on the one hand and the phenomenon of drunken driving on the other hand are pointed out, as well as the different valuation of social drinking and alcohol dependence. The way of profanation of the drug "alcohol" and the importance of social infl

[Sialadenosis in a patient with alcoholic fatty liver developing after heavy alcohol drinking].

Sialadenosis is a unique form of non-inflammatory, non-neoplastic bilateral salivary gland disorder characterized by recurrent painless swelling which usually occurs in parotid glands. Alcoholism is one of the main causes of sialadenosis along with diabetes, bulimia, and other idiopathic causes. The prognosis is verified according to the degree of liver function. We present a case of a 46 year-old man who had alcoholic fatty liver disease diagnosed as alcoholic sialadenosis based on clinical points of recurrent bilateral parotid swelling after heavy alcohol drinking, computed tomography, and f

Heavy alcohol consumption among marginalised African refugee young people in Melbourne, Australia: motivations for drinking, experiences of alcohol-related problems and strategies for managing drinking.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about substance use among resettled refugee populations. This study aimed to describe motivations for drinking, experiences of alcohol-related problems and strategies for managing drinking among marginalised African refugee young people in Melbourne, Australia. DESIGN: Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 16 self-identified African refugees recruited from street-based settings in 2012-2013. Interview transcripts were analysed inductively to identify key themes. RESULTS: Participants gathered in public spaces to consume alcohol on a daily or near-daily basis.

"Drink like a man!" masculine drinking norms, alcohol protective behavioral strategies, and severity of hazardous alcohol use among college men.

Learned alcohol-specific gender norms can impact drinking behaviors in nuanced ways. Studies have shown that endorsing the masculine drinking norm (MDN) of excess (e.g., "A real man can drink a lot") is positively associated with alcohol use, while the inverse was found for endorsing the MDN of control (e.g., "A real man knows when he's had enough to drink and is able to stop"). Studies have also indicated that using alcohol protective behavioral strategies (PBS) can reduce the risk for heavy drinking and that men tend to use alcohol PBS less often than women. Thus, there is a need to examine

Effects of brand-matched alcoholic and alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks adverts on drink selections: A United Kingdom-based randomised controlled trial in an experimental online supermarket.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Restricting alcohol advertising may reduce alcohol consumption and related ill-health. However, advertisements for alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks (NoLos) with brand-matched alcoholic versions are typically exempt from restrictions, which could lead to surrogate marketing (adverts for NoLo beverages also promoting brand-matched alcoholic options). This study measured the impact of advertisements for brand-matched NoLo beverages on product selections in a simulated online supermarket, in the UK. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTION: We conducted a randomised

Alcohol-attributable injuries in admissions to a swiss emergency room--an analysis of the link between volume of drinking, drinking patterns, and preattendance drinking.

BACKGROUND: An association between alcohol consumption and injury is clearly established from volume of drinking, heavy episodic drinking (HED), and consumption before injury. Little is known, however, about how their interaction raises risk of injury and what combination of factors carries the highest risk. This study explores which of 11 specified groups of drinkers (a) are at high risk and (b) contribute most to alcohol-attributable injuries. METHODS: In all, 8,736 patients, of whom 5,077 were injured, admitted to the surgical ward of the emergency department of Lausanne University Hospita

Momentary subjective responses to alcohol as predictors of continuing to drink during daily-life drinking episodes.

PURPOSE: Subjective response to alcohol's stimulating and sedating effects is a person-level risk factor for heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder. Longitudinal and laboratory studies have demonstrated that at-risk individuals experience greater stimulation and lower sedation while drinking. While between-person subjective responses inform risk and etiology, in-the-moment assessments during daily-life drinking may elucidate the within-person processes by which stimulation and sedation may lead to heavier drinking. We aimed to characterize these momentary processes by testing momentary stimul

Effects of Pharmacologically Targeting Neuroimmune Pathways on Alcohol Drinking in Mice Selectively Bred to Drink to Intoxication.

BACKGROUND: Rodent models of high alcohol drinking offer opportunities to better understand factors for alcohol use disorders (AUD) and test potential treatments. Selective breeding was carried out to create 2 unique High Drinking in the Dark (HDID-1, HDID-2) mouse lines that represent models of genetic risk for binge-like drinking. A number of studies have indicated that neuroimmune genes are important for regulation of alcohol drinking. We tested whether compounds shown to reduce drinking in other models also reduce alcohol intake in these unique genetic lines. METHODS: We report tests of g

Influence of age at drinking onset on the alcohol deprivation effect and stress-induced drinking in female rats.

We have recently observed increased stress responsiveness with regard to alcohol consumption in male rats that consumed alcohol since their adolescent period. Thus, early age at drinking onset can induce enhanced stress-induced alcohol drinking in male rats. However, it is not known whether female rats respond in a similar way. Therefore, we compared the drinking behavior of two female Wistar rat groups--one that acquired alcohol consumption during adolescence (adolescent group) and the other that acquired their drinking during adulthood (adult group) in a model of long-term voluntary alcohol

Differential effects of quinine adulteration of alcohol on seeking and drinking.

Alcohol dependence is characterized by compulsive alcohol use. Alcohol-paired stimuli can drive compulsive alcohol use, induce craving, and lead to relapse. Alcohol dependence is highly heritable, and individuals with a family history are at elevated risk to develop an alcohol use disorder. Understanding the association between genetic vulnerability to alcohol dependence and neural alterations that promote an addiction phenotype are critical to the prevention and treatment of alcohol dependence. Here we use selectively bred alcohol-preferring P rats and their progenitor strain, Wistar rats, to
